Upgrading to 2.1 Tutorial

everything installed on my htc droid eris smoothly like a buttered frog in a skillet:D some apps no longer worked like: documents to go & get geocache. this was ok since there were free versions now available for my OS in the market that were no longer there before. the only glitch came when I trid to call out, the system did not recognize my phone, even after the programming. no problem, I called verizon, and they had it up and running like a hamster on a pound of pure cane sugar:D thank you all who made this possible and the person(s) with the most excellent instructions!

Hey everyone.

I'd like to install 2.1 onto my phone but some (probably most) of my contacts are saved to the phone and not go Google/Gmail. Is there anyway to back those up? I'd hate to have to sit there and add all those numbers back.

Thanks!

There are tons of apps to back up contacts.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is that lookout has this ability, even though it is more designed for theft, you should still be able to use it to backup then restore your contacts.

After lurking here for months, I finally took the plunge, and upgraded to 2.1 last nite. I feel silly now for waiting so long. Thanks to everyone for the great information. :D

Just a suggestion, but there appears to be a lot of confusion over the whole "wiping your SD card" topic. I have done both leak V2 and V3 and the only thing I did on my SD card was place the Update Zip on it and then remove it after.

Of course it is always a good idea to back up any media storage at another location, but I notice that some people are formatting their SD cards to perform the update and I think this step is unnecessary and could cause some grief.

Just my opinion of course, but some less than tech savvy people take things the wrong way and may not be backing up their info prior to formatting.

P.S. Thanks for the Tutorial Matlock!!!

You are welcome !!
Good suggestion . I have noticeed that aswell. Soon as I get my laptop back i will put emphasis on the SDCard. (using PS3 at the moment . not easy to type with a controller ) lol

You don't need to wipe the SD card at all however as was mentioned backing it up is a solid idea. I wiped mine the first time but after that I said heck with it.

for some reason i cant mount threw my phone anymore..i plug my usb up and it doesnt give me the option of mounting..i have 2.1v3

During the installation and setup, I was asked about the default connection...defaulting to charge only. You can change this in settings to disk drive.

it sais that my usb is not recognized..sais it has malfunctioned..should i reinstall 2.1v3? or go with 2.1v2?

Well cross your fingers for me, I'm in the process right now. I was going to root, but after reading through the reasons to root, I decided I really don't care, I'm not enough of a pro to take much advantage of it. I'm also pretty sure if we don't directly get the OTA, we'll be able to flash it like all the others anyway so why not do it?

Thanks for all the help from everyone in the thread. I downloaded the update and I am loving it. I was already having problems with the my phone and verizon was just taking way too long on sending the update.

So far I love it and I am glad I did it. I mean we could be waiting forever on verizon to finally update. No problems as yet though.

Someone has probably answered this question before but I have 2.1 v2 on my phone and haven't received the official update yet but when i do receive it can I just download it and everything will be fine? Will i even get it ota? Thanks
