Root UR EVO to CM10 bootloop

revelry

Newbie
Hello all,

I've been struggling with this issue all day. I'm very inexperienced and wondering where I've gone wrong. I was previously successful about a month ago rooting for the first time and installing UR EVO rom. I want to try out CM10 and hoped I could figure it out.

I'll try my best to state what I have:
TAMPERED
UNLOCKED
JEWEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.19.0000
RADIO-1.12.11.0809
OpenDSP-v29.1.0.45.0622
eMMC-boot
Aug 9 2012,15:14:25

TWRP v2.3.1.0
Restore: 2012-10-14--18-12-40
Install: cm-cfX-20120904-OFFICIAL-jewel.zip
gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
UR_EVO_4G_LTE_SIX.zip

Steps taken:
TWRP-Wipe>Factory Reset
TWRP-Install (cm then gapps)
TWRP-Wipe cache/delvik
TWRP-Reboot

That had me stuck on the CyanogenMod load screen. I learned to flashboot the boot.img through FASTBOOT USB. This was assumed successful because it got me past the load screen and to the welcome screen. However, selecting language>OK it then shut off and began boot loop.

Some where in the mix I read to update TWRP, and I thought I did that as the version number changed to the recent one but I remember following the instructions saying it would reboot one/several times but it did not.

I've tried to restore the UR EVO I had backed up but now that does boot loop as well. I'm sure there's a way out of this, I just don't want to go about it wrong any further.

Please help.

You have to wipe everything except SD card. Then fastboot flash the kernel (boot.img) in bootloader. Then flash the ROM in recovery.

Sounds like you just didn't wipe enough. You want to do this to flash a new ROM:

TWRP-Wipe>Cache, dalvik cache, system, factory reset
Bootloader-Fastboot flash new kernel (boot.img)
TWRP-Wipe>Cache, dalvik cache
TWRP-Flash new ROM (then gapps if necessary)
TWRP-Reboot

You are correct, I did not Wipe>System, Wipe>Factory Reset

Just went through those steps and same thing happened. It loaded to the "Welcome - Just a sec" screen and then rebooted.

I tried a second time and when I did Wipe>Factory Reset it Failed. Now it seems like the SD has been wiped. I go to Install and only thing there is TWRP.

I've seen that before but unfamiliar. I also put the SD in an adapter and looked at it from the PC and everything was still there. I'm also going to find the rom again and re-download it to the SD.

Attempt #249 in detail:
SD in PC
  1. Download jewel and gapps direct to SD from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1851912
  2. Copy jewel.zip to C:\Users\Owner\Dropbox\EVO Root
  3. Extract same location
  4. Drag and Drop "boot.img" from above location to C:\Users\Owner\Dropbox\EVO Root\sdk-tools (retrieved from our forums' mini-sdk)

SD in LTE
  • Started bootloader (HBOOT 1.19)
  • Recovery (TWRP 2.3.1)
  • Wipe - Cache
  • Wipe - Dalvik Cache
  • Wipe - System
  • Wipe - Factory Reset (FAILED)
  • Reboot > Bootloader

bootloader
  • Plug in USB (Changed to "FASTBOOT USB")
  • Start CMD
  • C:\Users\Owner\Dropbox\EVO Root\skd-tools>fastboot flash boot boot.img
  • Sending>OKAY Writing>OKAY Finished
  • fastboot reboot

white htc dev notice in red font
  • Stayed there for 5 minutes - assumed stuck with no OS
  • volume down+power, release power for 1 second, press power again for 1 second

bootloader
  • Recovery
  • noticed USB still in on teamwin splash screen, unplugged
  • Wipe>cache
  • Wipe>Dalvik cache
  • Install (noticed "Use internal storage" radio button selected, changed to "Use external SD")
  • directory address changed to /sdcard2
  • flashed rom "cm-10-20121029-UNOFFICIAL-jewel.zip"
  • flashed gapps "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip"
  • Wipe cache/dalvik
  • Reboot System

startup
  • White htc splash
  • CyanogenMod load screen
  • jellybean "Welcome"
  • selected "Start"
  • signed into Google (never got this far before)
  • restoring account...

SUCCESS!
Maybe it was the "OFFICIAL" version I was trying to flash? Got the link from HTCEVOHACKS.com

Well this has been one long strange road! I'll spare you the details of the last 4 hours (mostly because I don't remember them) but they include: bootloops, relocks, no recovery, 24,573 google searches... etc

Long story short, somehow I got CM10 flashed again (Viper caused a bootloop) and internal and external SD is recognizable!

I'll ride it out until something else goes wrong.

If you try Viper again, please note that you don't want to wipe from TWRP - let it do a full wipe from inside the installer (it's using its own superwipe as I recall), and remember to flash its kernel separately as well.

Anyway, glad you're sorted out with CM10. :)

I won't pretend to know exactly what's going on. When I was installing Viper, it said it was flashing a kernel upon startup but I'm sure I misundertood. With the popular references to Titanium Backup I was going to install it last night but says I'm not rooted. Thought I had to be to run TWRP to flash cm10 but whatever. I'll leave it as it is for now while everything is working!
