Help USB Host?

It's been mentioned in the large sticky thread above you, but USB OTG mode was included in Honeycomb so it's assumed that it will work in ICS on the Galaxy Nexus.
 
There has been confirmation a few places that it is on board, including screenshots showing USB gamepad connection management in the Nexus.

A very stretched assumption considering the battery and needed power. Not long to find out though. Perhaps a chance if powered sources.

Big assumption being Samsung has designed the device to work with it.

It's become part of the official API for Android. Not assumed at all.

While not all devices are necessarily required to support it, I bet we find most all devices that launch with ICS will.

You're right about the power stuff though, but there are ways around that.

Anywho, I'm 99.9% sure the GNex will support host mode.

But that's just this packet's opinion :)
 
Please educate me. So does this mean that I get a mini to standard usb adapter plug one end to the nexus the other plug a jump drive of what ever size and can it will read the jump drive? If so does that kind of negate the whole sd slot argument? I dont think I will need this as I have not come close to using the 16 gig I have now but just wondering for argument sake?

Even better...imagine a case that has an integrated microSD card slot...

Yep you can do that. However my Galaxy Tab requires a special kind of USB cable to handle high power devices. I honestly have no idea how to tell the difference from a regular cable. They look identical, I just happen to try all the cables in my collection and one worked. :confused:
 
I was mostly thinking of like a 32 to 64 gig thumb drive does anyone know what the power consumption is on a device like that? Could the batt handle a thumb drive or would it be dead in like 10 mins? Everyone says they cant live without there hot swappable micro sd's. Im wondering if this is a partial work around any clues?
 
Wow. This discussion finally has me realizing the power in phones these days.

Plug phone into wall charger.
Plug phone into TV (USB to HDMI)
Plug in controller (or blue tooth controller)
Fire up an Android game or an emulator
= Smallest Game Console ever.

Also, the USB Memory stick thing might come in handy in a pinch. I love this phone more and more each day. RELEASE IT VERIZON :D

Power consumption is in the 100 to 200 mW range for SD cards, and that they only consume power for read and write operations. I assume that your standard thumb drive is similar, using the same memory technology. I have a couple of SanDisk "Cruzer" thumb drives that are simple adapters for SD cards to be plugged into, so even if my assumption proved to be incorrect, one of these SD to USB adapters would do the job, requiring no more power to run than a removable Micro SD card plugged in to any other phone.
 
So thumb drives will almost for sure be supported with some kind of adapter?

If so then I'm okay w/ no sdcard. Put everything on thumb drive then just copy it to the phone when needed. A case with built in storage using this would be amazing(million dollar idea)
 
Well I plugged in a 4GB thumb drive into my SGT 10.1 and was able to browse files without problem (using the adapter).

Took awhile to find the right folder as there were like 4 folders named "usbdrive" but it worked.
