Nothing serious but I had my phone hooked up to my Laptop and when I unplugged it the USB symbol is still there?? It has been left overnight but is still there this morning!!!
 
A little odd.

Try rebooting the device, connect it to the usb and then unplug it to see if the problem repeats itself.
 
What operator do you use?

There is a new software update for the desire (at laest for the unbranded versions) which seems to help some people with the long shutdown issue.
 
Okay, try getting a task manager, shut down all running tasks before trying to shut down the phone.

Impractical, but if it is an app slowing you down, it should work.
 
There is a lot of good ones out there, personally I suggest ASTRO's built in since the app itself is a good file browser.
 
I occasionally get this same issue, with the USB icon staying in the notification area, I just "pull down" the notification bar and clear it manually, does that work for you?
