User Reviews + first impressions

Being an OG EVO owner from day one, I can say that I love the 3D, faster speed, and larger memory. Really thrilled at how good my Blu-ray 3D movies look in 3D, and YouTube 3D videos, too, but just hate the crappy speaker downgrade (should have been two EVO speakers in stereo). Dislike the relocated side position for the USB port. Sadly missing the kickstand.

The phone has rebooted several times or crashed in the past two days since getting it, with no obvious reason why. Had to pull the battery at least four times. Most annoying is to discover upon reboot that the apps stored on the SD card that had icons on the desktop need to have their icons recopied to the desktop to replace the annoying Android icon placeholders. At least the apps themselves still work, but I've already had to recreate my desktop screens (which are quite full) twice. Not fun, not even a little bit. No, I have not installed any additional task killer apps.

Still like the phone, but it's not exactly stable yet. Keep checking for another OTA update that fixes some of this unpredictability, but not holding my breath 'til then, either.

The biggest issue, though, has got to be the overwhelmingly time consuming transition/transfer/resetup/configuration going from the EVO to the EVO 3D. I'm not rooting my phone, so I'm not using Titanium Backup, and I haven't found any reliable tools to copy over all my app config data. Other than trying and failing with My Backup Pro, which copied some relatively unimportant things like text messages and call logs but actually *deleted* my old bookmarks, there doesn't seem to be a good and quick method. At least I found the Angry Birds save game backup and restore utility, LOL. I've spent the past two days reinstalling and configuring all my apps on the new phone, and I'm finally basically done. I may just sob when I drop this thing someday, but honestly, there needs to be a better way, as literally spending days reconfiguring a multimedia device such as this are days you'll never get back.

One thing.... When it reboots and you loose all your icons for the apps that were moved to sd.... Go into app manager and force close the "htc sense".. It will rebuild the icons

The speaker is weaker then the evo 4g, my friend at work has the epic 4g, and we both were playing bowling, not only did his screen look better, but the sound was louder, mine was all the way turned up, and is was halfway and still louder. Just an observation.

I do not own a evo3d; but I did play with one for about 90 minutes @ the store. The fellow was very nice; realized I would not likely buy it but was happy to let me take it outside as well as do other a few other tests.
-
Surprising to me the 3d aspect was about the most positive thing . I watched several 3d trailers from youtube. The biggest complaint I had is that if I did not hold the phone in the right position I quickly develop sea-sickness. but this seems to not happen if held in the right position.
-
The lcd was a bit of a disappointment. While plenty sharp (due to higher resolution) and pleasant neutrality; perhaps slightly warm I felt it was undersaturated (some folks like this) and it faded 100% in bright light (out doors) while set to max brightness. If I were to rate the iphone 4 screen an a or a-; this screen would be closer to a grade b (this is highly opinionated and represent my opinion).
-
Media sound quality was very good but call quality was not so good. However, I do not think this was related to reception. I've heard this pattern before and sounded like an issue with the DSP. It can't be the speaker as media quality was quite good; so perhaps there is some sort of interference or perhaps the process (if there is one) was not set with a high enough priority. If hardware it will not be fixable with firmware but I suspect it is a software issue.
-
Can't comment on battery life.
-
The phone was fine (plenty responsive) for most other task. I did not bother with benchmarks - others have run them and I've seen the results plenty; for me they do not matter much. Either it is cpu limited or it is not.
-
Bit concern about the camera button. I like to slide the thing into/out of pockets and I will not use a case; seems like the camera button would catch as it has a bit of a sharp edge but not 100% sure here.
-
The weight did not bother me as much as I had expected; but it would put a bit of tension on the pockets (esp when wearing shorts).
-
Most of the negative comments are minor; though I did expect a higher quality lcd. However, the call quality issue has to be fixed before I give the phone further consideration. I really can't compromise here.

I've been out of town for a few days and I doubt I will catch up on all that has happened but skimming the thread on chargers I wanted to mention one thing when using third party chargers.
-
The number one enemy of these batteries is heat. If you use a charger (car charger) that allows higher amps than the phone expect the battery will get warm and that tends to shorten battery life (though it has the nice positive that the device will charge faster).
-
No clue what this phone (or rather this phone's battery expect) and if the htc/sprint charger limits the amp when using a car battery. However it is something worth checking; or you can always replace the battery (if not the phone) in a year or two.

This is my first smart phone, and I'm learning as I go.

Three observations:

1. The battery life is unacceptable. Within only 3g and wifi enabled, this thing is flat out DEAD within 5 hours. If I'm using the GPS function to find my way around, it's much less. I can almost actually watch it drain. If I can't at least have a single day of use, what good is a smart phone?

2. While in my pocket, it will suddenly enact any number of random functions, including playing music while I'm trying to order lunch.

3. The 3D functions are a hell of a lot more fun than I ever thought they would be. Just try showing them to anyone not expecting it.

So, while I appreciate the capabilities of this thing, do I have to constantly be thinking about and manage the apps and wonder how close I need to be to a charging situation? As a side note, I can use it as a pocket warmer on ski trips because it's as hot as a 10 year old pc covered in dust.

Gracias.

I will say I tried to drain the already less than halfway battery after it was delivered today by youtubing, angry birding, web surfing, music playing, 4G, wifi, GPS, twitter, facebooking, and just plain out admiring this beast and it took 4hrs of nonstop bullying to finally kill it. Now it's getting an AC refresh.

People must really be abusing this thing lol. I'm going on 9 hours now with decent use and I still have around 40% battery life remaining (GPS, WiFi, and in certain locations 4G enabled).

I found out that, even when Wifi enabled and connected, the 3G radio stays on (for some stupid reason). My DX never did that (it auto killed the 3G antenna whenever Wifi got a solid connection). So tomorrow I hope to see a marked improvement of battery life.

For your second issue, are you using bluetooth headphones? If so, it's because the 3vo and your headphones lost sync for a moment, then re-sync'd. Then Android saw that there was sync again and resumed music play. I use wired headphones now. 2 reasons. One, the bluetooth syncing thing I just mentioned and 2) improved sound quality.

I miss the kickstand too and am not real happy about the side USB. Cause I had a nice Sedio dock that charged with my case on. I had synced app brain right before I sold my phone back to Sprint so I was good on getting my apps back. I got most all of them skipped a few that I didn't use much plus got a few I had to delete before cause of no space and I got a few new ones and after all that I have 742mb left and am like WOW!

Only had 70 something left before on the old EVO and was constantly clearing cache and deleting apps and I wouldn't update apps anymore unless it was something I used every day. The space and how much faster this is is amazing. And I love sense 3.0 I've said this a few times but the new skins are cool and I love this purple theme. I have a memory app and my memory is always on 100 and something and then I hit free memory and it goes up to like 400 and something. My friend asked if there were any free apps that would free up memory on it's own like where you set it to free memory on it's own every few hours or are they all paid ones?

Anyway great phone I am really pleased with it. Only thing I have left to do is copy over my bookmarks and configure all my pages. I took a screen shot of my EVO's pages but I had multicon and had 4 apps in one and everyone of my pages were too cluttered. I don't think I want to do that again. I like just the one app so you can see the name. So instead I'll have different scenes to switch between. If I was to do multicons again I would just have 2 per spot not 4. Oh and how did you restore you Angry Birds? My friend was asking that too.

I had few issues today, when I went to the marlet I tried to dlownload an app and it started to download, then the icon disappeared, tried this a few times, and the same result. I had to restart the phone, and whe I did my apps and games that I dloaded, the icons changed to the green andoid, very odd, but the market worked, it dloaded, definitely seeing some bugs, makes sense, these were the first batch

Gracias.

I should have mentioned this above; on the unit I played with the button is extremely soft touch; esp the power button on the top.

While the screen lock can be used to limit functions that might take place; it would be a bit of a battery hog when the phone is not in use.

I can confirm the wall charger and car charger for the palm pre work. Also, I bought these for 5 bucks at verizon. I dont know if they are still having the sale but the car charger from palm is very sleek looking and small.

Shop around because they can be had for 5 bucks with free shipping.

How'd you get your BluRay DVD movies on your phone? Did you use some sort of program to rip down the movie file only and then transfer to your phone? I know it's off topic from the review subject, but I'm curious how people are able to do this. TIA.

Note that in NO way am I promoting piracy or illegal file sharing, only viewing the movie YOU bought at the store, via YOUR phone, similar to listening to YOUR purchased music CDs on YOUR mp3 app/player. So yes, "ripping", not "stealing". Sorry, have to say it, and I do mean it.

Two decryption apps are mentioned in this post. I used the Sly one.

The only app available so far for ripping Blu-ray 3Ds is discussed in this thread. Despite the warning that appears when the other company's decryptor is running, it still seems to work.
Converting 3D BluRay for Evo 3D - xda-developers

An .mp4 (h.264+acc) video bitrate of 1864kbps (default) at 960x540, left/right 3D format, half video frame, stereo audio at 160kbps (wish it went higher to 320!) seems to play well on the EVO 3D. Just remember to select 3D in the HTC Video Player menu, which may take a try or two. It looks absolutely awesome.

I will now be buying MORE Blu-ray 3Ds to view on my new EVO 3D. The Disney ones are usually the same price as the 2D ones on release week, with the downloadable coupon. Yeah, someday I'll even get a new 3D TV, once the format settles and the glasses improve. Power DVD on PC can display Blu-ray 3D movies in anaglyph (red/blue) on a 2D screen, although it's obviously nowhere near as nice as polarized.

If you want to view regular (non-3D) DVDs and Blu-rays, google "Handbrake", as that info is widely available elsewhere.

Also, don't forget about the 2GB filesize limitation for the device.

Oh and how did you restore you Angry Birds?

In the Android Market on your phone, search for "3in1 Angry Birds Backup". There are other utilities, but I tried this one and it worked for all three games. Just make sure you follow directions and play a level of each game to create the proper files and folders on the new phone.

If you don't have your old phone anymore, though, this may not work, as you need to be able to copy over the save game files to import them.

Oh, I completely agree. I'll make that statement as well. I do not promote piracy.

People -> Menu -> View

Do you have both Phone and Google checked?

Did you save them to phone? If so, they won't back-up to Google - something to consider carefully.

Thanks mon. I didnt have google checked. I had 204 contacts on my phone and 3 recently added under google. You recommend i save them all to google?

Yes saving all your contacts as google back them up and that is how you get your contacts back. When I went from my EBO 4G to the 3D once I signed into the marketplace with my gmail my contacts and my calendar entries all came back. Plus you can go online to add and change things too and it syncs to your phone.

No he doesn't have his old phone anymore but he backed up his old sd card.

The application configuration data, such as saved game files, is usually stored on the internal memory of the phone, which is extremely frustrating for non-rooted users. Backing up the SD card content alone but not the internal memory while rooted is not sufficient. I lost a lot of app config data because I never rooted my old phone (Titanium Backup is frequently recommended for root users). I strongly feel that Google needs to come up with a smoother transition method for migrating app config data to a new phone.

wow that makes things a lot easier. One quick question though: how do i back up my contacts from "phone" to "google"? Thanks in advance

You export them from phone to your sd card then import them back as google I believe that is what I was told to do when I 1st had the same questions last year when I got the EVO 4G. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe that is how.
