Root Using fastboot

Does the img file have to be on the root of the SD card in order to see fastboot flash? Coz I just booted into hboot, selected fastboot but there was no fastboot flash listed nor anything to fastboot clear cache?
 
No, the img file needs to be on your computer. The fastboot commands are things you type on your computer while the phone is connected via usb and in fastboot mode.

As for how you set your computer up to use it, Dan has an FAQ for that :)

Edit: If you don't have a computer handy, there's also the PB99IMG method (for which you do need to put the file on the root of the SD card).
 
I was gonna say, coz I thought I didn't need to use the pc as I'm s-off. So do I have to use this method to flash a different table?
 
Did you see the edit to my post? The PB99 method works without a computer.

You needed S-Off to enable these fastboot options. You still need a computer to use it.
 
Just use a computer. Set up fastboot as per the adb and fastboot faq. Note adb and fastboot are different.

Its all in the faq, including the specific fastboot commands to flash it.
 
Duck when you rooted your phone I am sure you installed SDK files on your computer? Its commonly known as "android-sdk-windows" in case you forgotten it might be in the root of ur C: drive on ur computer....

If you have it... place the "cm7 img" in the "tools" section within the android-sdk-windows file and then use fastboot commands I give you yesterday to flash it:

Cheers everyone, I'm just getting confused that's all, I thought being s-off I didn't need to use the pc, I know I can use pb99 but that's seems more hassle, what is it then that being s-off enables me to do that s-on doesn't?

you know what im going to say dont you ducky? READ THE GUIDES :P

s-off allows you to modify the system partition while booted into android which is otherwise protected
it also allows modification of the MTD partition layouts which is otherwise impossible as nand is by default protected when s-on is flagged.

it doesnt mean certain things can just be done on the fly

Stop being scared of pcs ;)

Read my faq as you're not going to progress in the android world without fastboot knowledge.

Ok ok I get it, I will read the FAQs and learn as many adb commands as my brain will let me.
 
I've had a quick look at the guides now and understand a little better thanks, so my next question is fastboot flash or android flasher? Which is better in your opinion Guy's?
PS, cheers Dan for the last post of your guide. Lol.
 
I tried flashing bootanimation and recovery through android flasher and both times it was an EPIC fail so I went ahead with fastboot and lemme tell you something it was easy and more straightforward than android flasher!
 
Thanks ginga, I think ill have a go when I get some time to do it, I'm only worried if anything happens during the flash, my laptop has a mind of its own and occasionally powers off,
 
Lol, yeah I'm actually looking for a new one at the minute, I've seen a few, but to be honest I ran unrevoked fine and s-offed with no problems, so I reckon ill be fine. How long does it take to flash hboot? I'm guessing not long, and once I've done it it will give me the confidence to flash new radios and stuff.
 
all these guis do is over complicate things and stifle learning

fastboot as stupidly quick and reliable as all android flasher does is uses a VB6 gui to execute and fastboot command

the only thing i find it good for is changing the spash screen
 
I wouldn't flash a radio if I thought the machine might fail part way through though! Since radio .imgs are about 25MB in size, these take a little longer than hboots (which are more like 200 kB if I remember correctly), and we all know what can happen if that is interrupted.

I'm not a PC, so have to use fastboot flash anyway (Android Flasher is Windows), but it is very simple. Just make sure you have typed the command correctly before you press enter, and, er, that's it.
