Root Using Google Voice as Voicemail (With CM7)

I am finding conflicting information about using google voice as my visual voicemail with CM7.

Some information I read is that Sprint is still rolling this out.

Other information I read says I need to call a number (starting with *) from my mobile phone to set it up. Whenever I call that number I hear a series of 3 beeps and that is it. It doesn't say it failed, but it also doesn't seem to be working. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I should note that I downloaded the voicemail .apk that sprint generally uses. It installed fine, and it is able to see that there is a voicemail available, but it always gives me the "voicemail can't be downloaded" error, rending the app mostly useless.

there are two ways to set up gvoice that I am aware of..the *number way or doing it online...then it calls your phone and beeps three times.

have you tried calling and leaving yourself a message?

Yeah, I have. It didn't do anything (it just went to my regular VM). I did hear three beeps when I did the "number methoud" though. In any case, I got Sprint VVM working, which is all I wanted anyway, so this isn't an issue.

I suppose I will ask another question though. Being that Sprint is only free mobile to mobile (I have the any mobile unlimited plan), is there a way to use google voice to receive calls for free? I know they are integrating something with Google voice, I am just trying to figure out if Google Voice will even be beneficial to me.
