Using my phone in Mexico

I am going to be using my Dinc2 in Mexico for some emergency type phone calls, to play games and to use the internet/facebook over wifi only. I'm all set and ready to go, but I was wondering if someone could give me a detailed list of all of the settings I will need to turn off in order to make sure I'm not accruing any data charges while there. I know that just turning on airplane mode won't be enough and that I need to turn off data roaming. If I completely shut off 3g will that do it? If not, what else needs to be turned off? I also heard that some apps can turn data back on themselves. Any idea what apps those might be? Are any of them "native" to the phone (meaning apps that came on the phone, not apps that I've installed from the market)? Any tricks to figuring out which apps I've installed that might do this too?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to come home to a $500 phone bill!!
 
That was my point. If you can't use data in airplane mode they can't charge you for using data. If I'm wrong about that I really want to know.
 
I've never heard of apps turning on 3G without you knowing about it. However, if you don't want to use up data, turning of 3G is the way to do it (it's what I would do). Using WiFi will not accrue charges. As far as phone calls go, you can still get charged for roaming on the minutes if you don't start an international minutes plan for your trip.

Remember, the Inc 2 is a global phone, so it's designed to be taken out of the country. It requires an extra plan, but these are temporary plans, meaning you only need to pay for it for the duration of the trip, then you can end it one you get back to the US of A. I'm not a VZW rep, so one can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but this plan includes data usage outside of the US, so you may want to just pay for this plan instead of worrying about tip-toeing around roaming charges.

If you're not making any calls and just want to get on the internet using wifi you can just get into airplane mode.

You can turn on wifi while airplane mode is on.

Also, from what I know if your 3g is off, it's off but you might get a call which will have to connect to a tower.

On airplane mode, no one can call you

I get what you mean, but from what I was told by Verizon, I shouldn't rely on just turning on airplane mode because that only deals with the radios on the phone (not that I always trust Verizon as evidenced by me being here).

I'm not doing the international plan because the phone is only going to be used for emergency-like calls. They are only .99 a minute & I doubt I will make more than 5 calls. I only want to be able to call my husband and our daughter if we get separated, etc.
 
Hit menu> settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks> data roaming select deny data roaming access.
Just keep your 3G connection turned off, swipe down the notification bar, uncheck mobile internet. Keep it off the whole time you are there.
That should do it. 3G turned off & data roaming access denied. Not that I have ever seen or experienced ANY app ever force enable 3G/ mobile data.

Curious what radios wouldn't be on the phone. Maybe the radios in your head. You could wear a tinfoil hat to block those! That was some serious confusion from that Verizon no-service rep. It almost makes sense because voice and data use different connections but it's the same radio.
