[Verizon] Avast Mobile Security & Root

darkcyber

Android Expert
I have been reading the reviews on Avast Mobile Security in the Market and everyone seems to love it. So, I decided to switch from Lookout today to Avast and it has a feature called Anti-Theft. When installing this root based feature it asks how you want to install: Direct Write Method or Recovery Image Method. It suggests using the direct write method for non-nand protected phones. The root based feature makes the app hard-reset proof.

Now to my question, is anyone using Avast and this Root based Anti Theft feature and have you had any problems with it screwing up your root or any problems flashing new roms...etc?

Just a word from the wise one: http://androidforums.com/857877-post14.html

Thanks for the info. I have been a fan of Lookout and that's what I have used up until I saw Avast. I am a big fan of Avast AV for the pc and I decided to try the one of the mobile. It has worked great so far. I just haven't installed the anti-theft stuff yet.

I heard my name. :p I actually use lookout. It's non-invasive. :p

Hey just got a Samsung Galaxy Note and it is my first android. Really have no idea whether i am supposed to use the Direct Write Method or Recovery Image Method to root avast on my phone. Can you help me out??

? you do not need anti virus programs on android

it serves no purpose as virus' for linux is just ridiculous. lookout is probably a better bet, as all it does is scan your apps to make sure they are not malicious, and it can also help track your phone if it turns up missing one day

+1. Linux virus lol.

Sorry sir/miss but this is a galaxy nexus forum. Wish I could I could help you though.

it is a galaxy nexus forum, however the app is an android app. we could move it to the galaxy note, but the user has yet to respond so until then we can leave it here, as it may or may not be spam

Sorry didn't realise that it was a Nexus forum. I am not really concerned about the anti virus. I need the anti theft feature, specifically the one that allows me to remote activate my GPS. Since 2.3.6 does not allow for it, the app has to rooted on my phone. Can you please direct me to a Note forum where i can post this??

Hey. I did check the app. The only problem is remote activation of GPS is not available. Apparently android 2.3.6 does not allow for it. So i have to root my phone. Since i am complete new to android i don't want to try it myself. I read somewhere that avast anti theft can remote activate GPS once you root it. The only problem is i don't know which method to use for a Note. The note forums don't seem to have a particular thread for avast rooting. So i posted here.

Look for all things root for your phone in that forum. You need to root your phone, not the app, for that feature. However, if you don't feel like rooting, Lookout Security has the anti theft features you need without you having to root your Note. Good luck my friend. Let us know how it goes.
