Verizon/Best Buy people, help me out here.

The wife really likes my Thunderbolt except that its too big for her hands/pockets. Magically, for whatever reason, Verizon sent us a text message last night authorizing her an early upgrade on her line. Our account on Verizon's site confirmed the text message. She gets excited because she HATES her current phone. So I'm think the DINC is perfect for her. Smaller plus she doesn't need 4G.

Well Verizon is completely done with the DINCs. They don't have them anywhere. Best Buy DOES have the DINCs but when we went there to get my wife a phone they told us that they can't do EARLY upgrades. New contracts, line adds, regular upgrades they can do. But early upgrade they can't.

Somebody PLEASE help me understand this and even better point me in the direction of an Incredible for 100 bucks for my wife.

If your phone has a 1 year contract, Verizon would allow you to upgrade after 10 months, anywhere else it's the full 12 months.

If the phone is on a 2 year contract, you can upgrade after 20 months if done at Verizon, but the full 2 years (24 months) anywhere else.

Hope that helps.

So I'm stuck with verizon's junk selection of phones. The phone is on a 2-year contract that was just upgraded this past fall. We got an early upgrade on it last night for some reason. So where does that fall under the two scenarios that you mentioned?

Just wait for the incredible 2 which is rumored to be out later this month. It will be 3G and have a 4in screen. Smaller than the thunderbolt :)

I agree. :) It is sad that the Incredible is gone now, though. :(

Have you checked any of your local VZW stores to see if they have any in stock?

This is wrong. All companies let you do a standard upgrade after 20 months. It is standard procedure. They want you to sign a new two year contract before your contract is up so they don't risk losing you to another company. Bought the original Droid in November of 09 through my company and sure enough, I can buy my next phone using an upgrade at Best Buy in July of this year.

Best Buy would be able to do that because you are eligible for a regular upgrade. Early upgrades would be anything earlier than 20 months and Best Buy would not be able to do that.

So, what it sounds like is you are trying to upgrade before 20 months have passed. So no, Best Buy can't help you, but not for the reason this poster said.

I must've been mistaken then. Thanks for pointing that out. I had a friend who was eligible to upgrade after 20 months with verizon, but letstalk.com wouldn't let him because the contract wasn't over yet. Figured that was the case with Best Buy also. My mistake.

Yea those early upgrade can usually only be done at a Verizon Store or Verizon Website. In my experiences. I would wait for the Incredible 2. Since it should be slightly smaller than the thunderbolt.

I work for Cellular Sales, a Verizon Wireless premium/authorized retailer. We are able to use early upgrades, but most other places cannot. Typically the early upgrades were annual upgrades for primary lines (secondary/share lines don't usually qualify for them). The stores that can't use these upgrades can't even see that they would be available.

Our stores are not receiving any more Incredibles, but we do still have some in various locations. If you're anywhere near the mid-Missouri area, I could try to get you taken care of, but otherwise it'd all have to be done through mail which wouldn't be any easier on you than just ordering it online somewhere.

Dump your wife and find a woman with manlier hands......

This is actually the soundest advice given so far. Not to disrepect or disregard anybody else's smart advice like wait for the dinc2 but we are talking about a woman here. Words like "smart" and "reasonable" just don't compute for them.

The facts of the matter that her Palm Pre was garbage, she was jealous of how awesome my phone was and once verizon gave her an upgrade, money was coming out of my wallet right then and there.

In fact, as I just read what I typed, you know what really pisses me off.......my wife was having problems with her last phone too before the Palm Pre. MY line came up for an upgrade this past fall while I was deployed. Verizon let her use my upgrade to change out her last broken phone to get the Palm Pre. So when the Thunderbolt came out, I didn't have my upgrade and was forced to add a line to get rid of my old junker phone. Then they turned around and gave her an f'n early upgrade anyway a couple months later costing me even more money! Wow, I can't even effectively express how angry I just got.

Anyway, I'm off course now. We wanted an Incredible because it was everything a smrat phone should be, it was perfect for her, and it was only a hundred bucks. Once we struck out at best buy, there was basically two alternatives. She didn't like any of the other droids. Which I honestly don't blame her for as I really don't either. The X is hideous and the 2 with its sliding screen and keyboard is junk.

So, alternative #1 was tell her that we can't afford a $200 phone right now. Which, isn't far from the truth really but we just got our federal taxes back with state taxes still to come in. Both she and I know that there is extra money in the bank. Money that is better suited being spent somewhere else but still....its there. If I tell her to suck it up with her junk phone because we can't afford it right now....how well does that go over? Seriously.

Alternative #2 was to let her get the phone that she wanted and be done with it. She was excited about the DINC. A great phone for a great price, I was happy to get it for her too. You cannot go worng with a 100 dollar DINC. But when that went out the window and we were going to end up paying 200 bucks for her phone, where do you think her head went??

"If we are going to pay $200, I might as well just get an IPhone. It'll be the same price as the Incredible 2. Except the iphone has more accessories, more farmville exclusives, and I could get it now."

Yes, that was an exact quote. F'n farmville exclusives! Now people, I do NOT condone spousal abuse of any kind. But I'm thinking I could have gotten a free pass from a judge or jury here if it came down to it.

Now, I'm not a fanboy at all. I love my t-bolt but I'm not naive enough to think that the iphone is not a great phone. It is. And its a gigantic upgrade from her old phone. I want her to have a great phone like I do and I want her to be happy and I'm fine with the iphone. But for some reason, as soon as she mentioned the farmville exclusives, I instantly wanted to smash something. Basing an important and expensive purchase on some stupid facebook game (don't even get me started on facebook), only a woman would do this.

Anyway, to sum up an already long story: my wife has a brand new iphone, sometimes women are absolutely unbearable, and Verizon has successfully made my shit list.

All depends on who you talk to at VZW. After a few phone calls I got a supervisor in customer care to give me an early upgrade. My contract had just been started in Oct when I got my Fascinate, so were talking like 18 months early. So while it is said by some reps to be impossible to get an early upgrade, its really not. at&t says the same thing all the time to me, and I've never had a problem doing a little digging and eventually striking gold and finding someone that could have an early upgrade happen. Problem is phones are coming out at an alarming rate, so eventually some of us will have to pay full retail for one of our new toys. Ohhhhh well!

The f'n farmville quote was classic and would give me yet another reason to hate the iPhone. Thank God my wife isn't into that game.

Unclench and stop generalizing about half the planet's population, please. It sounds like you two have much larger issues than which phone to get.

Got an early upgrade notice from Verizon at Christmas. Used it to get a FREE DINC at Best Buy. They DID have to call Verizon to verify, but they did the upgrade. Upgrade was 9 months early.

Haha, as I started reading the iPhone parts, the first thing that came to mind was to suggest she wait until the iPhone 5 came out and drove down the price of the iPhone 4 or avoid buyers remorse this summer. If she threw a fit about waiting then remind her how you waited for an upgrade because you donated your upgrade to her....women, can't live with em....wait, what's the other part?

Unclench and stop generalizing about half the planet's population, please.

Iphone users? I'm confused. I wouldn't say they make up half. Thats exaggerating a little don't you think?

It sounds like you two have much larger issues than which phone to get.

Bigger issues than making a decision based on whether or not you can access a stupid facebook game? Yeah, thats a typical reaction. My wife doesn't have much of a sense of humor either. She always finds the dumbest stuff funny but the real funny stuff just goes right over her head. Its a woman thing, I guess. I can say, though, that she doesn't claim to be a marriage counselor or a psychologist and she isn't very presumptuious. Those traits must be limited to your strain of the woman species.

By the way, generalizations and stereotypes, if you will, are usually based on some merit, just for the record. A stereotype is like a hypothesis. Not enough evidence yet to become a full fledged theory but enough credibility to at least justify its plausibility. Plus, generalizing can be pretty fun. For example, I wrote a little quiz. Answer the questions and then score your answers at the end. The quiz will determine if you are a man or a woman.

Question #1 You have only two channels to select from on tv to watch but you can only watch one of them for the rest of your life Which do you choose?

A) ESPN or B) Lifetime network

Question #2 Its Sunday afternoon and there are two chores that absolutely must get done today. Your spouse gives you first dibs. Which do you choose?

A) Clean the gutters or B) fold the laundry

Question #3 Its Saturday night, you have two options on how to spend it. Which do you choose?

A) Go out for a nice night with your spouse and some of his/or her friends (but none of your friends) or B) Let your spouse go out with his or her friends while you stay home, enjoying the fact you finally have the house to yourself for a change after working nearly 60 hours this week and you sit on the couch drinking beer and watching porno.

Question #4 Do you THINK you are a good driver?

A) Yes or B) No

Question #5 Are you ACTUALLY a good driver?

A) Yes or B) No

Ok, theres actually no score at the end because we all know how the quiz goes. But if there were, I'd make the men higher on the points scale.....because men are worth more! (Zing!)

No....see. I kid, its all a joke. Except for the Farmville quote. That actually happened. Oh, and the women being unbearable sometimes quote. That actually happens to..............like daily. (Zing again!)

Anyway, since this thread is probably on a crash course to closure city, I would like to say thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread in a positive way and DIDN'T judge my marriage. Thanks to you.

To all of you that did judge my marriage, shame on you. Marriage is a holy and sacred bond and your attempt to dampen it will not go without punishment. God is mad at you now. Have fun not getting into Heaven.

It's all in fun. We know that not all women are the same, but when a guy is having woman issues, we are all in for some light-hearted ribbing just to ease the pain of the relationship. That pain is the same for man and woman. Please don't take it as personal, the vexing relationship between man and woman has proved good fodder for ages, or for as long as men and women have been around.

BestBuy will honor the early upgrade, they will have to call Verizon to verify they will allow an early upgrade. I haven't done this in about 5 years but I have two close relatives that work for BB mobile and they said all they would have to do is call to honor the pricing. Also, whatever the retail price of the phone is for 2 years, they can do better. Every week the mobile area manager sends the stores a competitor price sheet of all stores, online and off, of what the prices of the phones are. Just find the lowest price and Best Buy will match it.

Wow...Interesting. I guess Best Buy must be making too much money because I went on March 25 to buy my TB there, my kids had bought me a gift card earlier in the year, and the two people who waited on me said that could not help me with my early upgrade. The told me to go to Verizon to buy my TB. I wasn't happy since the BB was 20 miles away plus I had to use a toll road to get there and the Verizon store was 3 miles away and no toll road. I just wish I could get the home desk charger from someone no matter how far away.

I was told the same thing at my local BB. I guess it depends on the person's mood at the time. I'm not a big fan of BB, whatever I find at BB, I typically find it cheaper online by a good 10% 20% cheaper. Gotta love Newegg.com

It's possible that Best Buy doesn't get full credit for upgrading a line as to signing a new customer up. This may be perhaps why some reps don't want to waste their time on certain upgrades. Even though they don't get paid a commission per deal they sell, their department does have a quota to make as a whole. If they reach it, they get paid a 30% bonus.
