Root [Verizon] Can you root and not change the ROM?

Unlocking the bootloader is the most inconvenient part, that has to be done before using this toolkit.
Flashing a ROM is easy, not sure why you would need a toolkit.

Unless unlocking the bootloader has dramatically changed, it rooted for you and gave you custom recovery.
The toolkit says you must have the bootloader unlocked in order to use it.

NOTE: You will need to unlock the bootloader using instructions/files from Adam Outler before using the Toolkit. His instructions are very good and he has stated he does not want redistribution of anything. There is more information in the Toolkit after you select your model.
 
Once you're unlocked, in theory can flash any ROM, even if you're not supposed to.
So you have to make sure what you're flashing works with your phone.

CleanROM does work with it as does Beans 3, pacman, paranoid android, etc.
Once you get the custom recovery from unlocking make a nandroid backup in case you have a mishap.
 
Ok, I'm knee deep in this.

I downloaded everything from Adam's site, as well as the clean rom.

So I have everything I need, in theory, to get this one.

However, I'm stuck. Figures... Right from almost step 1.

I ran casual. It opens, but does not recognize my device. I turned off my firewall and rebooted my phone a few times. Still nothing... Can't get past "disconnected". Which is odd because I do have the ability to open the files on the phone through explorer.

I did enable developer options as well and selected USB debugging.

Any suggestions?

Good thru his troubleshooting steps.
I had that problem too, but it was my cable. I couldn't see my phones files.
You did say your cable was loose before. Try the cable that the Note came with, that was the only one that worked for me.
Also, read thru some of the posts in the thread. There were several people with problems and had different resolutions.
 
Ok, I got it to connect finally. Ran casual. Didn't work the first time. Went through the process, but said at the end it wasn't rooted and didn't prompt me to hit volume up.

Ran it again and it prompted me for volume up to continue.

Now it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target". It's been doing this for about 5 minutes or so.

Casual is no longer connected.

Is this normal and how long should I wait? I'm getting a little nervous...
 
Holy crap... I did it :)

Rooted. Installed Titanium Pro. Backing up as we speak.

Now that I've rooted it... How do I flash a new ROM?

Appreciate all your help!!! Not as bad as I thought it would be.

You will have to check that thread.
The method of unlocking has changed since I did it.
It's much easier than before and he's using a different version of casual.
 
Awesome!
Download the ROM, put it on your external sd card.
Then boot into recovery, and take a nandroid backup.
When that completes, wipe davlik cache, cache, and factory reset.
Then install the ROM and follow the steps.

It's never as bad as people think, their fear is what makes it bad.
 
I already did a titanium backup. Is that the same thing as a nandroid backup?

I noticed some of the directions recommend doing a backup from that boot screen? And then a factory wipe and all the cache etc wipes...

I think I'm going to try the jelly beans ROM.
 
Titanium does not do nandroid backups, that has to be done in recovery.
Titanium get your apps and settings, nandroid backs up the entire device.
 
And while I'm asking... So once I get this back up. Still waiting on Jelly Beans to download. Mega giant file.

How do I get my apps and such back? Titanium?

I'm assuming nandroid just backs up your entire OS in case you F something up.
 
A nandroid backs up the entire device as is. You use it to restore to a previous setup.
For instance, after you flash beans, if you don't like it you can restore the nandroid and your device will look exactly as it did when you backed it up.
It will put the backup in /storage/extSdCard/TWRP.

Titanium is for restoring your apps and their settings. Don't use it to restore system settings as /system is different per ROM.
 
Did you use TWRP? And if so, which options did you select? I did data, boot, and something else. Can't remember now. It was the first 3 options that were pre selected for me. This is slooowwww.

I take the defaults except I change the name of the backup software I'll know which ROM it is. Otherwise it names it by date.
 
So I tried the Jelly Beans ROM. I don't really like it... It looks weird. There's a lot of back backgrounds with electric blue writing etc... Plus SMS has a pop up I can't get to go away.

Anyway, the clean rom doesn't seem to be verizon specific. Is that by design:

I'd like to try it but want to make sure I'm getting the right one. The link above it where I got it from.

BTW, Titanium doesn't seem to do shit.... I got more mileage out of the google backup and restore when I put my primary account on there.

Didn't remember any of my user names, gmail accounts, desktop folders or icons. Did I not use it correctly?

The OS can disable sms popup.

Titanium works great, you must have missed something. Many people use it all the time to restore user apps with data to eliminate having to reset all app settings. User apps are apps that you downloaded and installed. If you're using the default touchwiz launcher, that is a system app.

CleanROM states that it runs on all variants. I was running it all weekend.

Any idea on how to get verizon visual voice mail and hot spot tethering back on? Neither was included in the ROM. I downloaded the verizon visual voice mail app but it won't connect to the server. I called verizon and they said the phone was still provisioned for visual voice mail.

First, don't bothering calling Verizon for a problem with your phone when you know you're running an custom ROM, it isn't supported.

The tethering is included in the ROM, it's not an app, the app is not an app, it's a shortcut to settings - more settings - mobile hotspot.

I'll check on VVM.
