[Verizon] Clockwork ROM Manager Issue

Starnz

Lurker
Hi all,

I'm new on here. I have a verizon Galaxy Nexus and I am trying to us the clockwork mod app. When I try to activate it I click the verizon button to finish install. It reads an error message that says "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands."

Can anyone help me? My phone is rooted and I want to install jelly bean but I can't get clockwork mod to work.

Thanks!

Welcome Starnz!
We are glad you have joined us here at Android Forums!

I have moved this thread into the VZW Nexus "all things root" sub forum, because that is where I believe you will recieve the necessary help to get your phone back on track.:)

Hi Starnz and welcome to the forums!

When you say ClockworkMod APP, what exactly are you talking about? I am not familiar with an application by that name.

If you're referring to ClockworkMod Recovery, that's not an app. It's a recovery image that works outside the phone's operating system, designed to be accessed in the direst of circumstances - or when you want to flash a new ROM, replacing the operating system completely.

To do that, you HAVE to be unlocked and rooted. Check your app tray to see if you have an app named "Superuser". If you do, that's a good start and we'll go from there. If you don't, then let me know.

I think the OP might be talking about ROM Manager which allows you to flash ClockworkMod. The interaction he describes seems to fit the steps for flashing CWM from ROM Manager, but it sounds like his device actually isn't rooted (or root permission for ROM Manager was not granted).

Starnz, can you try to download and run this app: Root Checker to verify that you really do have root installed?

(you can also try my app--see the last entry in my signature--but Root Checker's probably a better tool for you in this case).

Let us know!

Cheers and welcome to the AndroidForums :).

I figured as much, Scary, but I wanted to make SURE that I was speaking to the right issue.

Something tells me that OP is not rooted... but I don't know that for sure yet. Root checker will be very helpful. Thanks!

Scary Alien I tried the app and it said my phone wasn't rooted. Now I'm confused. I have the unlocked padlock on start up and I have the super user app. Any advice?

Starnz,

Can you give me a little background:

1. Which app did you try? My Android Root Toolkit app or Root Checker?

2. Which version of Android do you have (Settings -> About phone -> Android version)

3. Why / how do you think your phone is rooted? (what steps were taken to root it?)

4. FYI, the unlocked padlock simply indicates that your bootloader is unlocked.

It seems likely to me that your phone was on 4.0.2 and was rooted, then the 4.0.4 OTA was accepted and you lost root. Does that sound right / possible?

All of that is perfectly normal, but you'll have to flash custom recovery from fastboot in order to re-root your phone.

Let us know.

Thanks!

1. Root checker
2. 4.0.4
3. I followed a video on youtube back in March. It kinda froze up during reboot and I thought it bricked then it rebooted fine with the padlock open. I had to install drivers and use the Command to install some files. I forget which ones.
4. I do remember getting the OTA update!

What would you recommend from here?

Thanks for helping me

No problem--that's what we're all here for :).

Okay, all that does indeed line-up.

So, to re-root, you'll need to flash the su.zip file from ClockworkMod custom recovery. So, if you don't have CWM (ClockworkMod) already flashed, you'd have to re-flash that first (i.e., get the custom recovery installed).

Here's a quick summary of the steps to do this manually:

- download the su.zip that's appropriate for ICS 4.0.4 and transfer it the top-level of your /sdcard directory
- make sure you've got your fastboot USB drivers installed
- make sure you've got the fastboot utility available / installed
- boot your phone into fastboot / bootloader mode
- flash or soft-boot ClockworkMod custom recovery
- flash the su.zip from CWM that you downloaded earlier and put on your /sdcard
- reboot and enjoy being rooted

All of these steps (and more) are outlined and documented in this thread:

http://androidforums.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-all-things-root/474570-how-all-things-root-samsung-galaxy-nexus.html

(thankfully, you've already got your bootloader unlocked, so you don't have to hassle with that)

You could do all of this manually, however you might want to check-out Wug's Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit since it automates these functions for you.

The downside is that I've never actually used that utility  (LOL, I've always done things manually myself ;)).

I'm certain is an easy, friendly tool, but I can't guide you through how to use it since I've never done so myself. Perhaps one of the other fine folks could chime-in with a few words of encouragement (pro or con) for using Wug's Root Toolkit?

~ ~ ~

Note: I would caution you that at this time, installing a JellyBean ROM has proven problematic for even some experienced folks. It might be best to simply wait for the JB OTA, but there's no telling how long that might be...

Cheers and I hope this helps!
