Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

Both my brother and I have Unlimited Data and we both hardly ever go over 2 GB of usage, more often than not we barely go over 1 GB of usage. In this case, people like my brother and I are being overcharged for our usage.

So... with that said, for people such as myself and my brother these family shared data plans might be a great deal.

If their current data plans are any indication...
* 2 GBs for $30
* 5 GBs for $50
* 10 GBs for $80

I can't really see them charging more than that for a shared data plan. The "5GBs for $50" would be something that my brother and I would be able to fit comfortably into and be able to shave off $10 a month off of the bill.

So in this case... it might not be so bad for people like myself and my brother who like the capabilities of our smartphones but don't go overboard with data usage.

Yes, that means I might not be able to use NetFlix on the go but honestly... Do I really need that? No.
 
Yeahha, I know you are one of us guys who have endless upgrades that they can use. I have three lines that I can use for myself to upgrade, and I am always a new phone junky. I always say I will keep a phone for two years, but it always turns into one year, because I always have an upgrade. Heck, I just bought a Nexus last month on an upgrade and may buy a galaxy s3 when it comes out using another upgrade. This is after getting a tbolt on release day.

Guys like us are really going to have to take a hard look at what's important to us.

This is kinda my thinking, without knowing the price structure yet. My mom has 300mb of data, my wife has a dumb phone with no data, and I used to but now rarely even get to 2gigs on my unlimited plan. So I'm wondering if I won't come out ahead after all this.

Yeah, that seems unlikely, but you never know

And your wife could probably get a smartphone as well after this deal goes down. Your mom, you, and your wife could start pulling from the same data usage pool and I think you're going to save some cash.

That's the thing... there are some people who don't want to add smartphones to their plans (at least more than they have already) due to having to tack on another $30. With the shared data I have a feeling that they are going to see more smartphone adoption by people who are worried about price, especially those people who want to add multiple smartphones to their plans.

I like having the Internet on the go but again, as I said before, I don't use it all that much. Some email, some web surfing, but never heavy multimedia usage. Even with the Galaxy Nexus the screen is really too small to enjoy watching a NetFlix video on. And even if I did, I would find Wifi to watch NetFlix on since seriously... LTE + NetFlix = Real Battery Killer. Streaming Radio, which I use Slacker Radio, doesn't really use that much data at all. Maybe 500 MBs a month if I push the usage of it.
 
And to those people who use their smartphones with tethering as their primary Internet connection at home... thanks a lot! You're the kind of people who made Verizon get rid of Unlimited Data in the first place. I hope you're happy! Cellular/LTE data was never meant to be used that way!

Same boat here, I will forego my corporate discount if/when they yank my unlimited. I like to think that things will work out fine, but I can honestly say that I have never had a positive experience with them for any change or issue. They are perfectly consistant in that regard.

The coverage V provides has kept me around for years. (they were way ahead of the competition), but a lot of the competitors in my area have stepped thier game up over the last 2 years so they no longer have the only decent coverage in my area.
 
After over ten years of being a Verizon customer, they can finally kiss my ass goodbye !

I don't care how good their service is , I'll pay Sprint whatever they want for unlimited !

This how how the beginning of the downfall of a company begins.............they start out with good service,plans and cost that benefit the customer, then somewhere along the way, it all becomes about what is better for the company vs. what is better for the customer !

to keep a phone for 2 years...shoot it is hard to keep a phone for 6 months sometimes...:o

I use wifi more than anything. I am no where near 2GB monthly but I only pay $10/line for unlimited so I think this will adversely affect me...

Yeah people want to be able to watch Netflix on a tiny screen...I prefer to watch it on something bigger...it is rare for me to be sitting in a doctors office or something and think...oh if only I could watch some breaking bad right now...:p
 
You all DO realize that Sprint won't be unlimited forever, and the ONLY selling point they have for now is their unlimited plans.... but once their network fails, they'll start cracking down.

As cellular service has become so widespread, fast, and multitasking able, providers have to cap it so the networks don't crash.

Two little words "I THINK" are the most used words in this thread. I think this, I think that, I think . . .

Truth is Verizon doesn't really care what anyone here thinks. They see us like a bratty 2 year old that will throw a fit and try to get their way. The same two year old that kicks, screams, demands, and delays when told something that "they think" is not fair, or done differently than "they think" it should be. As big daddy Verizon looks down at us all they can do is chuckle because what "we think" isn't going to change a thing. Sure it may give them a headache, it may even make them delay the ultimate reality, but in the end it's going to be as big daddy Verizon wants it to be, and we will all look up to them and say thank you when they are finished.

Verizon wants to take care of itself. They ate worried about profit...being a company and all that makes sense. They want to remain viable in the future...this move is something to work towards that...they are very aware that unlimited access finite resources is a recipe for disaster and want to keep away from that disaster.

Which is why they are now charging $30 to upgrade and will go forward with the tiered data/family data/killing off unlimited data.
They want the money. They will get the money. It doesn't matter what they call it, the money will be theirs.
Sure, they may lose some folks but the vast majority aren't going anywhere...they will complain and stay. Verizon knows this. They WILL get the money one way or another.
I don't like it but will stay. Their coverage can't be beat. Depending on what the family rates are I may be one of those who can actually save a dime. I'm not happy that they keep upping the ante but I'm not going anywhere.
 
I've added unlimited tethering to my unlimited data plan for an extra $24/month, I wonder what this news means for that feature. Also, I wonder if you buy a phone for full retail, off-contract if that will change your data plan. I would consider doing that if it is not considered a contract change.

Its not that we don't realize this. What we realize is that you could go to Sprint now and sign a contract and have unlimited locked in for two more years. WITH a subsidized phone no less.

Many times my five year old has watched Thomas and friends on netflix using my phone. Waiting to be seated in restaurants, road trips etcetera. :)

Heck, the ability to do so is the only reason I pay for netflix anyway.
 
I find it not amusing that just as video streaming like Netflix, HBOGO, and Verizon's own exclusive NFL mobile starts to take off they slap caps on everyone. Greed, greed, greed!!!

Agreed. I know it's not polite to point fingers, but after reading this one person that would use his phone for Xbox online game, Netflix (via Xbox), connect his multiple PCS and draw 50+ GBs a month....I can only SMH and think 'COME ON MAN!'

It's not. See their latest press release. You can keep your plan forever if you pay full price for phones, or even buy used phones.
