Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

I'm just going to sit back and wait to see how it all shakes out . I'm not at all happy about the prospect of losing unlimited. But right now we have a family plan with 3 lines, all 3 are android. That's $90/mo just for data. So happens the Verizon bill came in the mail yesterday so I took a look for the first time at our total data usage. It was 1.4g. And my son is a hard core gamer. I tend to think we may actually end up saving a bit of money.

I'm pretty much in the same boat (usage wise) as you Joey. I have a family plan with my wife and daughter. As such we all have grandfathered unlimited data and we pay $90 for data. (3 x $30 = $90)

Our data usage; (monthly averages)
Me................ .5GB/Mo
Wife ............. .5GB/Mo
Daughter ....... 1GB/Mo (does a lot of facebooking)
Total ............ 2GB/Mo

If Verizon were to offer a data plan (just guesses on my part at this time) for say 5GB's of shared data for $50, I would jump at it. It would save me $40/Mo.

But there is where it breaks down, you really think they are doing this to make LESS money? If most people are in this boat, and with no change to their behavior they would spend less, and only a small group would maybe twice as much do you think they would take a loss? No they want to make more money, that means the cost won't be a savings to people like you, but maybe a wash in the end somehow.

It could very well save many people money and if those people who are using 30+ GB on unlimited right now keep using data like that I am sure they will more than compensate for the people who pay the same or less by switching to a family shared plan.

And if reduce the average customers costs but increase the customer base they make more money overall.

Very true and if this is something that many consumers want but isn't offered there is a good chance they will get more customers from this as well.

Hasn't Verizon stated before that their so called "data hogs" account for less than 5 percent? Seems to me that blaming them for this new pricing isn't fair either.
Honestly if every data hog left and went elsewhere, their missing data usage probably won't make a difference. Especially when you take into account the teenagers moving to smart phones on their families plan lol.

Old news, but you can thank those who took advantage of the offer. Streaming music and videos all day/night, whether they were actually listening/watching or not. There you have it.

Yes, Verizon did say the the "data hogs" accounted for only 5% if thier customer base, but those "data hogs" accounted for over 50% of data used. Just like i stated in one of my previous posts, my family of 3 only average about 2GB of data usage per month, but my example "data hog" used 20-30GB's per month. That one "data hog" would require 24 customers like my family to equal the amount of data one "data hog" was using.

I think the carriers are moving in the right direction with making the people who actually use the data, pay for it. For example, do you pay a flat dollar amout for unlimited electricity, or do you only pay for what you actually use? Do you pay a flat amount for unlimited gasoline in your car, or do you only pay for what you use? Of course I already know the answer but don't you see by everyone paying a flat dollar amout for unlimited product, the people who use small amounts are subsidizing the people who use large amounts? All of us who use small amounts should be happy that Verison is moving towards a "pay to play" plan. Where the "data hogs" pay for what they use, and the rest of us pay for what we use. Just like with gasoline or electricity.

Almost all commodities are paid for this way. You pay for only what you use.

My 2 cents, and...... good luck to all of us,

When I signed up for unlimited data I was told that I could keep the plan for life if I choose too. That is what I plan to do. If I have to give up them paying some toward my next phone, then so be it. I am keeping my unlimited plan, I see my use going up, not down! Just think about next generation apps, video calling and voip. Do you really believe that 5GB shared between three or so lines would be enough? Don't think so in the near future. I'll keep what I have, thanks anyway....

I wish they would try a more diplomatic type approach towards this unlimited data. If I was in charge, I would eliminate all unlimited data upon the contract's end date, but give anyone who had unlimited the double data 20 gb plan at no additional cost. It's enough data that you shouldn't go over unless you're tethering while at the same time eliminating those data hogs that use 100gb. Seems fair to me.

First off, I only use around 4 to 6 gigs. My wife uses lesscthan two. I'm more concerned with losing my two $20 discounts for unlimited data. Which btw, I was told was for life.

Nobody knows how they will do it.

While some details may not be known (price vs. amount of data). The overall facts are, they will do it and the only out is going on a non subsided month to month type service. They must think that is about a equal screwing.

That discount is for life, and if you don't sign a new contract you will continue to have it. But as soon as you sign a new contract when these terms start, you will have to abide by the new terms, which means probably no more discount.

I'm in the same boat, so I will probably get a new contract before this starts, then see where we are in 2 years.

I just spoke to Verizon. They called off the plan to end grandfathered data plans. Official word came down this morning. Forgive me if this had already been reported.
Did they also say they're duct taping the CFO's mouth shut? I can't imagine he's too popular right now if this is true.

I said I wanted to speak to customer loyalty because I was probably leaving. She then told me they received the letter early this morning that due to customer outcry, they've changed policy for grandfathered customers.

Yes, you don't use 4 to 6 gigs accidentally.

Nope not accidental at all. Five gigs a month has been the unwritten standard to try and stick to.
I have a smart phone that I use and enjoy. It's what I purchased it for. It's also why I have unlimited data.
I'm not tethering therefore I'm not doing anything that would be outside of my contract terms.

Glad to here Steven.

I think it is more likely they postponed it rather than canceled it..
