Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

Nope not accidental at all. Five gigs a month has been the unwritten standard to try and stick to.
I have a smart phone that I use and enjoy. It's what I purchased it for. It's also why I have unlimited data.
I'm not tethering therefore I'm not doing anything that would be outside of my contract terms.

No one's blaming you for using your phone for the reason you purchased it or accusing you of violating any contract terms. What is perplexing is that you used the words "only" and "4-6 GB of data" in the same sentence.

Exactly. I use my smartphone on my lnch breaks every day. Also independently of my home internet. Its easy to go over 5g. It actually doesn't seem like a lot to me but I also use my smartphone or tethered tablet as my main source of internet. Now, some people say that since I use more I should pay more. Well, that's not what I signed up for. Sorry if new customers are tiered but you got into that yourself. I got into UNLIMITED so our use isn't the same and shouldn't be considered the same because we signed up under different terms. If you have unlimited but only use 1/2 a gig, then the same applies, you signed up for unlimited and are paying for unlimited so I don't see the hostility towards those who use their unlimited. Btw, I tether because I pay.

Aaaaaanyway, I hope what Steven brought up holds.

I didn't say I was being blamed. Just stating my opinion, which it seems a lot of us share including some of our mods it would seem.

As I said 5 gigs has long been the unwritten mark to try to stick to. I dont know why that perplexed you.

I'm in law enforcement and am in my car a lot. Early mornings and late at night I use my phone quite a bit.
Between Google music, Pandora, and my son watching netflix over lte, it's not that hard to reach frankly.

So... I guess that they will continue grandfathering the unlimited data even with subsidized upgrade phones? If that's the case... then I guess Verizon heard the yelling and screaming.

I just spoke to Verizon. They called off the plan to end grandfathered data plans. Official word came down this morning. Forgive me if this had already been reported.

Boy, I hope this is true. I've done a bit of light Google searching and haven't turned anything up yet.

I sure hope this is true. I spoke to my Verizon rep yesterday and he had no information to share. But then again, he never does. lol I'm generally more in the know then he is by the time the information trickles down. However, he strikes me as more of a "need-to-know" kinda guy.

As has been stated by others, I'm more concerned about losing my $20 discount per line for data. That's an amazing plan that I'd hate to lose. I certainly understand Verizon going to this policy, family shared data is what the people want and for the vast majority of family plans, this will probably save them money. If it wasn't for my discount, this would almost certainly be a better plan. I'm the only one on my plan that uses multiple GBs, but with the implementation of 4G, and so much capability in these devices, I know that's going to rise.

She used the word cancelled, fwiw.

To be honest I have doubts that Verizon tells its employees its canceled without putting out something public soon after... I hope they're right and didn't just want to get you off the phone.

I said I wanted to speak to customer loyalty because I was probably leaving. She then told me they received the letter early this morning that due to customer outcry, they've changed policy for grandfathered customers.
Frankly, it was rather odd for this "new" policy to be announced by a CFO in the first place. Operation of a company is run by the CEO and/or the president of the company. Such announcement should come from them instead of the CFO. So he has already violated the proper protocol.

Now I am not here to arguing about whether it is right or wrong. I know eventually all carriers will go to the share-plan route. Actually, AT&T has indicated such plan first. Verizon is just playing catch up if such plan is true.

But if Verizon is ending the unlimited data plan, they are shooting themselves in the foot to make it so much easier for their customers to switch carriers.

I have been quite upset about Verizon not getting the latest greatest smart phones. There is no Verizon variant of Galaxy S II, no Galaxy Note, and no HTC One X. All of these are the top tier and best selling Android phones and Verizon is not carrying them (the Galaxy brand is proven to be the best selling Android devices). What the heck?!?!?!:mad::mad: And when Verizon carries a new phone, they tend to be the LAST carrier. They are usually about 6 months behind the first carrier on getting a new phone. And 6 months is a very long time in the mobile world. The only thing that keeps me from switching carrier is the unlimited data. Although I don't use that much data (I never go over 2 GB per month), but it is nice to have it just in case.

Unless Verizon starts being the first or second carrier to get the latest greatest smart phones as soon as they are available, the day they ends the unlimited data plan will be the day that I switch back to AT&T (I was a Cingular customer) as they are always the first carrier in US to get new phones.

Yes, Verizon has better network coverage and better customer service. But I live in a major metro area and I am not a world traveler, so coverage might be a moot point. And great customer service can only carry them for so much and it got cancelled out by their lack of popular devices. So any attempt to end the unlimited data plan is making it so much easier for customers like me to switch carrier.

I'm with Sprint...I am just wondering, when Sprint might get rid of Unlimited Data.

I hope not.

Sprint is all about unlimited data. It's really the only think keeping them in the game.

I just wish they wouldn't have gotten the iPhone. That may be the unlimited datas downfall

I use wifi when I'm at home and 3g at work. I don't stream anything on a regular basis, just a few YouTubes a day. I also have dogcatcher downloading any new episodes of my 10 or so audio podcasts that don't get downloaded while on wifi. I guess that's considered heavy use. 5 gigs is about the lowest I've used.

Sorry about the rant. . .

Steven, I will not question YOUR credibility - however, until I see something OFFICIALLY from VZW - I'm not buying (no pun intended) THAT. I AM believing that the only way we'll be able to keep unlimited data is to pay full price for a phone. I work in a call center - any number of coworkers are looking for a quick answer to get off a call, I'm not saying that this is the case - but - based on call center metrics - it's within the realm of possibility. I'm guessing that they have gotten at least a few calls regarding this subject.

Not that I don't trust VZW, but - there's nothing to stop them (except for the CFO's big mouth spilling the beans) of doing the limited data rates at a reasonable price - and, once they get everyone off - then jack the rates - or - maybe they would be in the same situation with upgrades - except - instead on only me having to be a phone at full price - so would my wife (who doesn't use much data).

*I* stream music - almost 2 hours a day - 4 days a week - as of now - I have used 1.899GB - and my billing cycle ends on the 25th - so - for me - this may be much ado about nothing.

rant off. . .

i do agree with your words dilands, however most of us know that steven has inside contacts at some verizon facilities, and can get some good information, usually he wouldnt post something that he didnt think would be good information or correct information. it can also be a ways to ease the tension surrounding this problem that most of us grandfathered users are facing.

He spoke to customer loyalty, doesn't sound like an inside contact at all.

It could turn out to be true, but saying that changed policy leads me to believe that it would have leaked more than what we are hearing, which is nothing at this point.

Take what he said with a grain of salt. I know Steven will not try to promote unfounded rumors but you don't have to believe him he was just passing along what he found out. I too am looking forward to seeing an official statement from VZW on this as well

I've been out of a contract for 3 yrs now so I wondered when they get rid of my unlimited plan. Corp discount or not, I'm leaving Verizon for screwing me over. Good riddance.

You've been out of contract for THREE YEARS. Sorry, but Verizon doesn't owe you a thing.

First off, I only use around 4 to 6 gigs. My wife uses lesscthan two. I'm more concerned with losing my two $20 discounts for unlimited data. Which btw, I was told was for life.

I'm pretty sure when they told you it was for life, they meant the life of the contract, NOT your life. Do you really believe they were going to give you $20 discounts untill you reach the ripe old age of 99+?

In parting, best of luck to all of us,

It expires 2038, it is marked on the account like that
