I said I wanted to speak to customer loyalty because I was probably leaving. She then told me they received the letter early this morning that due to customer outcry, they've changed policy for grandfathered customers.
Frankly, it was rather odd for this "new" policy to be announced by a CFO in the first place. Operation of a company is run by the CEO and/or the president of the company. Such announcement should come from them instead of the CFO. So he has already violated the proper protocol.
Now I am not here to arguing about whether it is right or wrong. I know eventually all carriers will go to the share-plan route. Actually, AT&T has indicated such plan first. Verizon is just playing catch up if such plan is true.
But if Verizon is ending the unlimited data plan, they are shooting themselves in the foot to make it so much easier for their customers to switch carriers.
I have been quite upset about Verizon not getting the latest greatest smart phones. There is no Verizon variant of Galaxy S II, no Galaxy Note, and no HTC One X. All of these are the top tier and best selling Android phones and Verizon is not carrying them (the Galaxy brand is proven to be the best selling Android devices). What the heck?!?!?!
And when Verizon carries a new phone, they tend to be the LAST carrier. They are usually about 6 months behind the first carrier on getting a new phone. And 6 months is a very long time in the mobile world. The only thing that keeps me from switching carrier is the unlimited data. Although I don't use that much data (I never go over 2 GB per month), but it is nice to have it just in case.
Unless Verizon starts being the first or second carrier to get the latest greatest smart phones as soon as they are available, the day they ends the unlimited data plan will be the day that I switch back to AT&T (I was a Cingular customer) as they are always the first carrier in US to get new phones.
Yes, Verizon has better network coverage and better customer service. But I live in a major metro area and I am not a world traveler, so coverage might be a moot point. And great customer service can only carry them for so much and it got cancelled out by their lack of popular devices. So any attempt to end the unlimited data plan is making it so much easier for customers like me to switch carrier.
