Verizon g2 update won't install.pre lollipop

Well that's just it. I have the drivers. It's the vzw update assistant for LG that doesn't have my phone type listed. Or will doing the drivers from that link fix it?

OK so look, I have every driver that I can get for this stupid thing. I have the right program and the right cable and everything. I plug my phone in, I click on the update assistant program to open, it opens runs thru trying to gather device information a few times and then nothing happens. It doesn't come up with my phone at all. So before I literally chuck my phone against the wall or out the window I'm going to give up on this Lollipop crap. I'm sick, and was really liking the idea of laying in bed resting while playing with new phone software. But since I have the type of luck that I do, I'll give up now. I'm over it. It shouldn't be this difficult to do this. And I'm not one who doesn't like a good challenge, but this goes beyond that in my opinion.

I'm not sure what is going on with your device. You may need to flash stock firmware. Something is missing from your android software. I don't know if something was accidentally deleted. Or you might try flashing a lollipop rom and keep root. The instructions on how to flash stock firmware are posted early on in this thread.

I know that the instructions are there. I never did a custom recovery. Didn't feel the need since I wasn't going to flash any rom's. Ugh, I really just want to be on lollipop already. I'm just not ready to bite the bullet on the custom recovery or flashing the stock firmware.

Is this all we are talking about in this? I ask because I haven't seen a thread with a discussion about how people like it and such. I'm also surprised that my wife's phone the S5 hasn't gotten it and we have. Head scratcher there for me. Anyways, none of the suggestions for what I can do with flashing stock firmware is possible without a custom recovery. I'm just not ready to do that yet.

It's not lollipop. it's the 27a update to KK who's changes are few and minor.

You don't need a custom recovery to flash the stock firmware. Just LG Flash Tools, the 26a tot and the lg flash dll. Once set up, it takes about 3-4 minutes to complete the actual flash. It's standalone software.

See this is why I didn't flash anything with this phone. Everything just got complicated, as much as I tried and try to understand all this stuff, and I read a ton of stuff trust me. It just still never clicked for me. I guess I still need a dummy definition of these things that are new to me. I started my flashing days with an HTC. I continued it with motorola. I tried Samsung and hard bricked 2 phones. And I'm on LG now and the methods of flashing is similar but all this 26a and 27a stuff doesn't click for me.

You are certainly no dummy but here's my best effort at a lay terms explanation:

With LG, you can update via OTA just like all others of course. But you can also take matters into your own hands and install software to a PC and flash it manually (much like an RUU on an HTC device). The 26a and 27a are just the firmware versions. Until the most recent update (27a), most every verizon vs980 was running 26a firmware. You can verify this on your phone by going to Settings > About Phone > Software Information > Software version. I haven't updated due to root & custom recovery so I'm on VS98026a still. That's original kitkat 4.4.2. The 27a update just did a few piddly things as mentioned so it's a small, incremental update to kitkat that most people wouldn't even notice a single change. That's the ota update that most vs980's have received in the last few weeks.

We have 2 ways to manually flash stock firmware, the kdz file and the tot file. They end up providing the exact same update to the phone but require different proprietary software to flash. Why they have 2 separate options to do the very same thing I cannot explain, it's just the way they do it.

As end users, we are not exactly supposed to have access to these files or the flash tools. But like RUU's of the past, insiders leak the firmware files and the tools to flash them. Which is a very good thing because if things go south, we can use download mode on our phones and the leaked tools and files to restore stock firmware.

Kdz's can be flashed through a modified kdz flash tool that has been posted on xda for the last year or more. Before that, there was a similar tool of an earlier build but it wasn't as reliable. The latest posted one is quite reliable. To use it, all you need is the single kdz file which flashes the entire phone back to an out of the box stock state. So you download your kdz to the pc, open the kdz flash tool software, and select your kdz as your target file and it flashes to the phone.

Tot files are a little harder to come by. For whatever reason, they seem to hold them a little closer to the vault. To flash a tot, we use software called LG Flash Tools. For this method, there are 2 files necessary to flash stock firmware...the tot file itself and a dll file which is specific to each variant of G2 (vzw/att/tmo/international/korean/etc). So you download your tot and dll, open LG Flash Tools software, and select your tot and dll as your target files and it flashes to the phone.

The quintessential thread for all this stuff is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476

In the OP, he discusses the use of both methods I mentioned and provides links to pertinent files and instructs for both methods. Many of the firmwares we have at our disposal are not the newest available, so once it's flashed, you can then OTA your way forward to get to the most current.

Wow. That's a large amount of info. I appreciate it, I really do! Thank you. I'll have to read thru it a bit more and decide if I want to do any of it. As much as it is commonplace to have to start from scratch when flashing a rom, however I would like to be on lollipop sooner than later. Anyways, this is a problem I face each time I think about flashing a rom.

Sounds good. If you do decide to do this, I don't believe the xda guy has the 26a tot linked on his servers as I didn't contact him when I acquired it. You can instead find it here:

http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G2/VS980/Stock_Firmware

The last zip file in that list is the 26a. You would unzip it to reveal the raw tot file. The 4th file from the bottom is the dll for the vs980. So those would be your two target files used in the LG Flash Tools software. That would set you back to 26a. Then the 27a ota would come through for you and you'd be set to receive lollipop when it comes to the g2 later.

So, I have the LG update tool. However I might have said earlier it won't show my phone being connected even when it is. It wants me to pick the driver to install from a list that doesn't show my Verizon model. Could I perhaps have the wrong LG tool program?

The OP of the xda thread is basically split into 2 halves. The first half deals with the kdz tool, the 2nd half deals with using tots and LG Flash Tools. He has links for everything there. Those are the ones you want to use.

My G2 was rooted with Stump Root before the 27a update. After the update it's still rooted, but the hotspot hack no longer works. I had to remove the hack for the update to complete, but putting it back in place afterwards is a no go. So in addition to whatever else they "fixed", they did something to Provisioning that makes the 26a hack no longer work. Hoping for a quick resolution to this. Go devs! And thanks for all that you do.

It appears it's working for some on 27a. I noticed a comment or two on xda which mirrored that sentiment but others say it's not working. I'm thinking there is a series of events that needs to occur in the right order to get it working again perhaps.

I didn't expect downloading the apk again would matter but it did! Put the fIle in place as instructed, rebooted and it works! Thanks for coercing me to try.
