verizon now splits up multiple text messages

brett1987

Lurker
dont know if anyone else tried/got this message but i have the stock messaging app and accidently sent over the 160 character limit and instead of getting the verizon message that says it only sends the first 160 characters to non-verizon customers. i got a message that read "messages sent to non-verizon customers over 160 characters are sent as plain text in multiple segments". looks like verizon is now splitting text messages for us. just thought i would pass this along to everyone. only problem i have seen so far is every time you go over the 160 limit verizon sends you that message every single time kinda gets annoying.

Be a friend and stop sending your Contacts more than 160 characters. That's what email is for! :( It's ok once-in-awhile, but it sounds like you do this a lot. There's simply no need.

But hey, if your friends don't mind . . . whatever.

You could change to ChompSMS or Handcent for your SMS app...both are better than the stock app (I like Chomp the best right now), they'll split messages for you so you won't get the Verizon text every time.

Some peoples friends dont have email on their phones though

Unless they have a Droid!

Are you actually an idiot or just trolling?

If you're texting back and forth with someone you're not gonna suddenly switch to email for one message then go back to texting. And, as mentioned before, not everyone has email on their phone.

Handcent, but it still breaks it up into multiple messages. My opinion handcent is the best you can customize everything. It fits the droid perfectly.

Completely off topic and pointless.

Thanks for the info original poster.

Hey, I'm just saying what so many others think. Anyone who consistently (operative word) sends texts over 160 characters long is just being annoying. Period.

Anyone else who wants to call me an "idiot" or a "troll" needs to PM me their address so we can have a little discussion face-to-face. I'm not some little wuss who hides behind a keyboard.

Why are people fighting about this? Some people want to use it, some don't. If you don't want to send long texts, guess what: YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

Why not just add a pic/icon to it, which will turn it into a mms. That way you can type away like a little school girl up to 1000 characters per annoying text with out double charging the receipents.

I'm not "fighting". Of course, I didn't call anyone an idiot or troll, but whatever. That's just greasy kids stuff. I did say that it's annoying. And I think "most" people would find it annoying if one of their contacts consistently sent them texts containing more than 160 characters.

The only people that are going to NOT understand what I'm saying are the ones that are annoying the hell out of their friends. I'm just trying to provide a valuable service before your friends tell you to bug off, or block your number. :D :D :D

Or e-mail...

Oh wait! Apparently not everyone who has a droid has e-mail... even though you have to create one to setup your phone. Hmm.

If you're texting anyone with a Droid, you don't need to worry about the 160 char limit anyways, since it's VZW to VZW.

Anyways, that's nice that the messages are split, but Handcent has that nice little counter for me, so I tend to keep it under 160.
