Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

I've been on this thread so long, I think I am addicted, even though I got my 32GB Blue yesterday. So far, very, very nice. The camera is amazing. Burst mode is quite good. Having some issues with pairing with my Bluetooth in my Benz, but I am working on it. Will be doing some serious battery endurance tests today. Put a Distronic case on it and a SGP nano shield.

Mine shipped today, est delivery is Tuesday from PA to CA. If it's 2nd day air, is there any chance I'll get it Monday? : tongue: I don't mind waiting but a day early sure would be swell.

I can't stay away either. :stickyman::stickyman::stickyman::stickyman::stickyman:

Just found out that Verizion's version will be the only S3 in the world with a lock bootloader. Extremely disappointed. I just lost half the excitement of getting the phone.

What is a lock bootloader?

If it is indeed just a locked bootloader, the developer community will likely quickly figure out how to unlock it. With an unlocked bootloader root access is easier, and once rooted you can more easily get rid of BLOAT and SPYWARE that carriers add to your phone, install custom ROMs, root requiring apps such as "Stickmount" a free utility that lets you connect external USB devices including hard drives, flash drives, some MP3 players to your cell phone and copy stuff to and from such devices using a $2.25 adapter you can buy on Amazon. And stickmount isn't the only root-requiring app that is quite useful and also legal.

Not everyone wants to do unauthorized tethering. Some people just want a phone with a clean ROM, without spyware and bloat. This is a HUGE low blow to the developer community.

Unless someone figures out how to crack the SGS III's bootloader soon, I am CANCELLING MY PREORDER. That will be one year less that I am on contract and I am moving to another carrier.

Honestly, I could probably even be happy with a stock SGS III. I actually like touchwiz, and miss some of touchwiz's enhancements on my Nexus. But I will be damned if I stay with Verizon and their continuing race to the BOTTOM on caring about their customers.

Locking the bootloader down hardcore is NOT to benefit customers. It's to force their bloat down our throats and not allow customer freedom. If you are knowledgeable enough to unlock and root your smartphone, you are probably smart enough to navigate to this forum for help if you "bork" something (soft-brick, or lockup your device pretty bad).

Every year verizon tries hard to be a bit worse - unlimited data goes bye bye, new every two goes bye bye, early upgrades go bye bye, $30 extra is charged, meaning there is NO SUCH THING as a "free" phone upgrade anymore, but they can still put "FREE PHONE!!!" advertisements up - supremely dishonest and unethical, but now they do it. What else? New sharing plans with PATHETIC gigabytes for your dollars unless you get into the upper tiers.

Sorry about the rant, but I've about HAD IT with verizon. Anyone remember the Fascinate? Yeah, it came with sucky BING, and I called verizon "Berizon" for some time, but you could root and install a SuperClean ROM and be DONE with it. Happy day!

Verizon is trying to take away all our happy days. They are the only carrier with a modified bootloader of the 4 major U.S. carriers. That could've been part of the reason for the delay and why we are the LAST ones to get it. In addition, I read a report (unconfirmed as of yet) that Verizon actually requested Samsung lock it up for them, which would be a clear violation of THIS:

It is Illegal for Verizon to Lock Some Bootloaders (Updated) – xda-developers

If it's just locked like the Nexus was locked, and not encrypted, there is still hope, but so far it's looking bleak. Sadly, while most users will not notice nor care, this would make the device hell for quite a few of us that want more capabilities or simply less garbage with the world's new flagship phone.

BAAAAAAD NEWS!!! BAD BAD NEWS!!! My credit card has an authorization on it from Verizon wireless on it now. My galaxy S III will be shipping very soon!

ARGGGG!!!! Now it's too late to cancel without the stupid restocking fee.

I really hope they can unlock this bootloader.

Edit: Just heard word on the IRC street that someone has been able to flash working CWM on the SGSIII. I know for average users that is a bunch of gobbledygook, but for those of you pre-ordering that want to root/mod/de-bloat your phones this is good news.

Remember, a Samsung locked bootloader is likely to be different than a Motorola locked/encrypted/sealedlikefortknox bootloader.

Evidently people don't really read posts here so let me try to help people here.

If you haven't received any shipping notice yet. Follow these steps:
1) Check order page(s) - yes two possibilities here:
Check Your Status - Verizon Wireless
https://preorder.verizonwireless.com/iconic/iconic/screens/IconicSearchInit.do

2) As soon as one says "Your order has been sent for processing" or the other shows plus signs next to your tracking number then you are on your way to getting some good old fashion Samsung loving.

3) At this point I would also log into your banking site to see if payment has been processed. This may also give you some indication if your bank flags as possible fradulent activity. I actually called my bank to let them know about the charge and to please approve it if they hadn't already.

4) Wait another 2-10 BUSINESS HOURS to see if you receive a shipping email from Verizon AND/OR log back into the order system to see if there is now a tracking number.

5) If no to both of the above then follow the instructions below. Wish I could take credit but I can't so I'm just reposting:

FROM Doit2it - our favorite Fed Ex guy:

"THE FOLLOWING WORKS IN THAT SHORT TIME BETWEEN WHEN YOUR FEDEX LABEL HAS BEEN PRINTED BUT YOU HAVEN"T RECEIVED YOUR SHIPPING EMAIL. TRY IT IF YOU WANT.

For those if you that are like grossie and have CC charged, status changed, but no FedEx tracking number yet:

The reference number Verizon is using for the shipments is based on the Order location and Order number (NOT the preorder number).

Go to Verizon Status with your preorder number (or look at you order confirmation email the day you ordered).
Get the Order Location and Order Number

Go to FedEx.com Track by Reference page.

Leave Account number blank

For reference number try:
LLLLLLL_00NNNNNNN where the Ls are your Order Location (including and letters), then underscore and 2 zeros, and the Ns are the Order Number. My order number was 7 digits. If your's was less than 7 you might try adding up to 4 zeros and try again.

Fill in Destination country and Destination zip code.

Let me know if this works, or if I'm just wasting your time."

tried with adding 1-4 zeros before and after the order number, still doesn't work order number is 5 digits

Well the news today that the Verizon S3 is shipping with a locked boot loader was the last straw for me with Verizon. Have been having connection issues over a month with my Razr Maxx and now this news. Walked into AT&T to buy the S3 today and done with Verizon. Thankfully I didn't preorder this and I bet them locking it down was a big reason they are taking so long to start selling it. Suck it Verizon!

I assume it was a Verizon S III, but I dont want to set myself up for disappointment so Im going to ask anyway - was it a Verizon S II? Are you sure it was a Verizon S III?

It appears we have root:
[ROOT] [RECOVERY] SCH-i535

Looks like some headway may have been made over at xda...

[ROOT] [RECOVERY] SCH-i535

^^^bah looks like you already posted it

(dont even have status update yet but I had been checking the dev section over at xda every couple hours)

Hahaha, Im the same way, my phone has been hanging out in Jersey for the last day or so but Ive been checking out the root/bootloader threads for a while now.

at the last step .... my phone gets to stay for 2 days on a dark cold (err hot) warehouse for 2 days!!!

justice must be made !!

see all you peeps were worring about the bootloader and some have already canceled their orders or whatnot.... give them some damn time to figure it out....lol... is great news for those that root... after awhile i may just have to try it

Can someone who had a Motorola Phone such as the Razr etc and now has the S3 in hand take a picture of these 2 phones side by side so I / we can see the signal bars. And if your up to it another picture of the signal strength in the status screen.

Verizon is pushing out an enterprise version of the GS3, so probably easier just to lock it all down (enterprise version with unlocked is a no no).

For hardcore rooters, I can see the issue, but it is all moot if the reception turns out to suck like the Gnex. Tuesday for me to see if it does or not. I can care less about boot locked loaders, but care MUCH more on reception.

Same here! Reception is my only concern. Never cared to root all that much. I guess I just value warranties to much. :D

My wife has the RAZR MAXX & I have the S3. I walked around our house w/ both devices & everywhere I went the bars were the exact same.

Hey, I haven't pre-ordered the S3 yet but I was planning on doing that right now. Do you think at this point its better to just wait and get it at a store the day it comes out or pre-order it online. I would hate for it to come out in the stores and I'm still waiting for it in the mail, when I could just go out and buy it.

My bet is the stores will have them before you would get one in the mail if you haven't ordered yet.
I would try Best Best on Tuesday.

So much butthurt about the bootloader... I mean really... do you guys have no faith at all in the development community? We already have working recovery and root at least which means for the time being we can at least TiBu restore everything from our old phones (once we get them). From there its just a matter of time... hell, we'll probably have at least one TouchWiz-free custom Rom before the month is out... maybe within a week or two. In the mean time, quit yer bitchin, we don't even know how bad it is yet.

For some, it's the principle of the matter. One of the considering points I had between the One X (Evo LTE) vs the GS3 was the bootloader. HTC does not allow the user to fully unlock their bootloader. Has the root community got around that and achieved full S-OFF? Yes, of course. But I didn't want to support that business practice unless I felt that the HTC device was a superior device to the GS3. Which, in the end, I obviously did not feel was the case and went with the GS3.
