Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

Rant incoming. . .

Look at it this way. . . Verizon told us that they would give us plenty of notice and a fair chance to do something about it once they were going to transition to the new share everything (including your bank account number) plans. I'm not particularily happy with the share everything plans but the fact of the matter is that I'd estimate it is only really going to really hurt roughly 1% of their customer base. . .those who are, in my opinion, abusing their data usage. If you want to listen to music all day pick a radio station, play mp3s, or get satellite radio. . . you have other, probably, better options for free or cheap. I estimate the new share everything plans will be cheaper for roughly a third of their customers, about the same for roughly a third and more expensive for roughly the last third. I've talk to plenty of people about it, if I were to change my plan to it I'd save roughly $10 a month (I choose to keep unlimited data until I can see a little more clearly where the direction of my data usage will be on a 4g phone over the next few years) but my parents would save about $40 a month (they simply don't use much data but do use a ton of minutes, so unlimited minutes and text with 2gb of data between the two of them would work perfect). As far as the ship by dates and "how long we all have to wait." PLEASE, just stop. As I mentioned, VZW told us we would get plenty of warning before they put these new share everything plans into affect. At least VZW gave us a great option of a phone with which we can keep our unlimited data plans. They didn't HAVE to do that. They have no good motivation for giving us a pre-order window so early or so long other. No pre-orders and your on the share everything plan no matter what you do if you want this phone. And frankly, I've been waiting for something with this next gen SoC, s4 or otherwise becase I'm into the die shrink and radio on chip to help with battery as well as the new architecture for better performance, to come out before upgrading. Would I prefer more options. . . sure, doesn't everyone prefer many options to just one?. . . Am I completely excited about getting the sgs3? absolutely. I'm a more excited that VZW finally went out of their way to try to make us happy by giving this to us before we couldn't have it with unlimited data? Of course I am and all of you should be too. I can put up with the I wish my phone would ship already talk that we see all the time, that is nothing more than unbridled excitement. . . I share that sentiment. What drives me nuts is how people think how poorly VZW is handling this. Think of the alternatives. . . and for once, pretend its thanksgiving and be grateful.

what bothers me is that you defend VZW too much , yes i agree if a date was given and you as the user choose to preorder knowing that date then STFU and wait for (not literally just the concept is what i want to get across)it but dont defend VZW they are a corporation and their job is to make money in the best possible way that benefits them.

Do Tmobile, Sprint, or AT&T stores have demo units in stores yet? Or is there anywhere else i can try an S3 out for myself?

Not all do, but absolutely none of the VZW stores have one yet.

The roll out of the device just started and carriers apparently barely have enough to cover pre-orders. I am skeptical they have enough for second wave pre-orders- "They" equal any carriers.

The point is about VZW is that in spite of a common device with common hardware, VZW STILL finds a way to differentiate in the wrong direction.

Sorry Rafty. My cynical side always kicks into high gear when Verizon is involved. I think the Darling Bride will be very happy to replace her OG Droid with the SGS3... IF it ever actually comes out.

And some retailers have already let a few customers get their pre-orders of the VZW version by mistake. I might have access to a demo before Wednesday, for a "whole" hour- wow! ;)

Im actually getting a bit of a kick out of the folks bemoaning the wait for this phone:D

I must be numb after the mess that was the GNex launch. So long as I have it BY 7/9 (per the email) I won't get my blood pressure up. In hindsight, I wish that VZW would have delayed the GNex longer and had gotten it right:o

Some got a Verizon S3 already?

YEAH , didn't you know they are sitting on the phones ... granted not the full pre order bunch but they are sitting on some but VZW wont ship them till the date they said they would because well its VZW

I had no idea. I wonder if any Best Buy's have any sitting in the back room they can't sell until Verizon gives them the go ahead?

Since updating the Razr to ICS, I luv the device, but not the battery life and hot running chipset (when playing Flash and 3d games). Still, ICS has made a nice comfy bridge. ICS has made the Razr so nice, I would probably wait if I had the Maxx.

Target and some smaller outlets are the "culprits". Apparently some stock has slipped through the cracks of launch. Probably just a few.

It is correct about the device leaning more purple than blue in color.

I agree. I have the maxx and if the sgs3 does not impress me it will be going back and I will wait for something else since I am paying full price anyway so waiting does not worry me as I am still in contract for awhile with unlimited data.

May be exchanging for the white on day one. Don't want a purple phone. Wonder if I could make 'em waive the restocking fee if I show them all the ads with the phone as clearly blue.

Cyanogen 9 nightlies have me really enjoying my Gnex right now and the 4.0.4 update made it usable as a phone. I'm actually going to be a little sad to give it to the future Mrs's.

The Maxx is a nice device but the locked bootloader, non HD screen, and non removable battery (no matter how large) removed it from my consideration set.

So which is it, "1%" or "a third"? The answer is likely well above "a third" especially if you don't have a smartphone (which is the majority of Verizon customers). Also, we a minority of a minority here. I think the Share Everything plans will be a huge shock to people at renewal time and that is why they are not forcing anyone on to one yet. We'll see how long that lasts. And, if they are really getting rid of individual plans for new customers will cost Verizon in the short term.

At a high level, I suppose Verizon doesn't "have" to do anything. However, when Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile are all offering pre-orders it forces their hand. If they did not allow pre-orders to keep unlimited data, you would see more people buying Galaxy Nexus, Razr Maxx, 4S or just leaving completely.

If you will allow me to don my conspiracy hat for a moment...Verizon had planned to release the S3 in July, after Share Everything came out to induce people off of unlimited data (hence the later ship dates). The other carriers offering pre-orders changed those plans.

Even so, as I said we are a minority of a minority. Only a small percentage of people who will get an S3 on Verizon will end up pre-ordering, the rest will be forced into tiered data. Verizon ran the numbers and decided that allowing a relatively small number of enthusiasts to keep unlimited data by pre-ordering was more desirable than being the only carrier to not allow pre-orders.

Verizon did not go out of their way to do anything. They are a corporation and everything they do is about maximizing profits. Full stop. Verizon is handling this poorly. While we harp about "ship by" dates, for pre-orders they have not announced a real release date.

There is nothing to be thankful for in this situation as far as Verizon is concerned. The only thing I am thankful for is that I was paying attention.

Did anyone else besides me notice that the Pop Up Play feature on the Verizon SGS3 is... well, limited?

There's an asterisk after the description and if you go to the fine print it says "*Not compatible with Netflix, YouTube, Media Hub or DRM protected videos."

Not compatible with Netflix or YouTube?
FAIL.
