Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

Since the weekend is here I am pretending that it is monday already. So now I can say just 1 more week before my new phone gets here. - I won't argue which day it ships verses which day I get it.

Wait what? Im on an Incredible running 2.3.4 and when I plug my phone into my computer it gives me 4 options, one of which lets me use my phone like a hard drive (as an aside, unplugging my phone from my computer has like a 50% chance of deleting a random number of applications stored on my sd card). Will I not be able to do this with the S III?

Can I transfer via Bluetooth?

I just want an easy way of throwing books on my phone :(

EDIT: As for the delay, I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon is stockpiling phones so that they have enough phones to cover pre-orders and have enough to stock stores with more than 5 phones.

There may be more bloat than on other carriers, but they're not throwing their logo on the front of the phone or anything.

Per Android Authority

The short story is that when Google started developing Android 4, they decided to abandon one of those 4 USB connection options you mention (I have only ever seen 3), namely USB Mass Storage (USM). From what I have read, they switched to only allowing two (Windows) protocols - PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) and MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), either of which essentially look at the type of files on your Android 4 device and then refuse to allow transfer (by USB, understand) files not deemed belonging to the realms of pictures and media. Very Apple of them, IMO. Why? Well, one Galaxy Nexus forum thread supposedly coming from a Samsung tech claimed their ultimate goal is to eliminate all "outside hardware connections" and external memory devices (SD cards) from Android devices. Ostensibly to get away from the diversification of where programs and files are/can be/ stored, to make it easier on program developers to code for "a single uniform platform design". I'm not buying it.

Now, there ARE alternatives, as this issue is currently only affecting USB in Android 4 devices. What I have found is that I can use a free app called Cheetah Sync to wifi sync "any" files from my rooted Iconia A500 tablet's Internal Storage (SD Card) and External SD Card (this is the confusing mess I referred to as diversification ) over to my Win7 PC since I can't do it with a simple USB connection after flashing ICS. Bluetooth might also work but I haven't tried it.

If you research the issue, you'll encounter a supposedly renowned tech journalist who insists that any ICS device which has an external SD slot and USB socket are not affected by this and still support USM. He is dead wrong. It doesn't work on my tablet, and it also doesn't work on my son's stock Transformer TF201 which came with ICS. Both have the hardware mentioned, and neither can transfer files which are not pictures or media. For me, not being into either of those categories, my tablet displays blank Windows Explorer windows when connected, where when it ran Honeycomb my PC was able to see and access every file in those locations and copy any I wanted back and forth to the same PC. I do so weekly as precautionary backups, having endured total SD card failure a few times (lost everything).

Under the PTP/MTP USB connection, there is no popup in the Android Notifications, no popup in Windows to show a device has been connected, and no "Safely Remove" icon available in Windows task tray when you plug in the device. It just shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer (however blank, for me).

A friend recommended an app called "AirDroid" to me. While it can't read the external SD card on the S3 (yet), it can transfer files to the internal memory via web browser. It's an interesting app. You should check it out with your GNex and see if it's a viable workaround for you.

I read about AirDroid the other night. I see there are some others on the Store too. For the simplest single-file transfer method I just email the file to myself. :) I imagine book files aren't all that big, unless lots of photos?

yeah its getting close... and for some reason i had a dream last night, (normal one) and i had a white device in my hands but in the dream i somehow tought it was a tiny tablet it was not until i woke up i realized i was dreaming of having the phone .... yeah i want it that badly that even my subconsciousness craves it :p

Why email the file to yourself, when you can set up cloud storage and achieve the same result. Just set up dropbox, box.net, or google drive (to name a few).

The cool thing about getting used to cloud storage, is that you can expand to have some pretty cool stuff. For example, download a free PDF printer, and configure it to save to your cloud storage folder. Now if you are reading something that you want to finish on your phone (that's not a webpage... those you can just send through chrome) you can simply print it to your PDF printer. Then you can go to your cloud storage, open the PDF, and viola, it's readable on your tablet/phone just like Blackberry's utility on the playbook.

I didn't want to hijack the thread and go off onto a tangent about why I won't use cloud storage. :-) I'll go so far as to make use of Gmail's server, but that's about it. In a single sentence, I don't trust cloud computing, and am wholly opposed to its implementation. I prefer local storage and backups.

Fair enough, however there are a variety of vendors besides Google, you should be able to find one that you can trust. Most/all of them can be configured to mirror a local folder on your computer(s), so there's your local copy/backup. If anything, it can actually help you with backups, since they sync across computers, but anyways...

If you're savvy enough to do regular backups, then setting up FTP (on either your primary computer or on your phone... a quick market search revealed 3 FTP server app's on the first page) and shuttle files across that route.

Personally, I use a FTPS server at home (not SFTP, which is different) and a FTPS client on my phone, in conjunction with cloud storage for less personal data. The FTPS works great if you turn on data encryption... use uTorrent to send torrent requests to your home box for your favorite linux distro, then FTPS encrypt download to your phone after it's downloaded. But to each his own.

Was it ever confirmed that the Verison S3 comes with a 50GB Dropbox upgrade?

I'm just curious how we would go about getting documents (.pdf files, .doc files, excel spreadsheets, and the like) on the phone. Are they considered media files, or do you need to use the Kies program or some other app to get them on there?

Ahhh Ohio what a great state to be from :)

I can say this because I lived there for many many years (South Eastern Ohio near Athens).

I would say that Colorado is the place to be but as you may have noticed we are having a little situation here with fires. Normally though it is a wonderful place to be. I am totally bummed right now as the fires have destroyed many homes and alot of our mountain biking areas remain closed. :(

Can't you just plug the SD card into your computer & transfer files that way on the GS3? Bummer if they eliminated the ability to do it though a cable directly into the phone memory, but it's not that big of a deal.

Aye, there are alternatives. One of the alternatives I use is MyPhoneExplorer. It'd be more useful for larger file size/number transfers, as it transfers via wifi instead of transferring through AirDroid's server.

Just bought this case:

RETRO DESIGN THE US USA FLAG HARD CASE COVER FOR Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 i747 | eBay

I hope it looks that good in person. But for $2.97 SHIPPED! that is not a bad trial :)

I do not have my S3 yet (this thread) but I simply setup shares on my home network and use Astro and File Explorer's LAN options to keep things updated. Moves files via wifi too and from my TF101 with ICS and my Droid X without ICS.

Been in Cincy since 79 but my goal in life is to retire (or before) to Colorado. I absolutely love it there and yeah the trails have to be incredible. But don't you have to worry about bears and such? And do me a favor, put those pesky fires out before I get there would ya...

The one exception for now is Moto phones, since they need connectivity with the lapdocks they use. The Razr with ICS has those connections option AND true mass storage mode and works great! :) The Moto in fact defaults to mass storage (by design for the lapdock).

My guess is ditto for the HD as well, IF it will be using lapdocks....

Mass storage is nice (HD), but not having a fixed navigation bar taking up space (SG3) IMO is better :)

Is this to celebrate the new health care system.. UUGGHHH!!!!!

I do have to say this one intrigues me as well. Can this thing ship already? :)

Aluminum metal & hard plastic cover case for Samsung Galaxy S3 SIII i9300 Silver | eBay

This is surprisingly nice but I would be afraid it might chip (what's that ;) )easily and if it did that it would not be pretty at all. Silver flakes all over the damn place.
