I wouldn't get one...that metal can significantly affect the NFC capability. It might not, but I wouldn't spend $15 to test it out.

No kidding right! I've been in an office all day so I'm enjoying the AC. I work downtown and park a few blocks away so I'm not looking forward to walking in this heat :mad:

Though my phone says it's 89* outside. That can't be right because on my way to work at 8:30 am my car said it was 85*. :confused:

I would say that Colorado is the place to be but as you may have noticed we are having a little situation here with fires. Normally though it is a wonderful place to be. I am totally bummed right now as the fires have destroyed many homes and alot of our mountain biking areas remain closed. :(

Opps how did I miss you two?! I agree, I don't understand the Ohio "hate" it gets. Nothing wrong with it. Sure it's not the most exciting state, but there are far worse out there :p

I've been to Colorado once, at Colorado Springs. Such a beautiful place. I would like to visit again someday.

I hope you and your friends stay safe! Along with yours and their property. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose a house to a fire. Stay safe!

There is no mechanism in place which I would feel reliable enough to trust any of them. I see them all like used car salesmen. Simply stating they are trustworthy has no value at all to me.

Bluray discs hold 25GB of data, are fairly quick to create, and have no uncertainty of security while sitting here. ;) Aside from backups like that, I have no need to put other files out into the world. I'm not into the aspect of multimedia and file sharing which this growing trend for cloud computing seems to be supporting.

All those types you mention are definitely not within the "allowed" types of files with PTP and MTP. Thus, my seeing what appear to be empty storage locations in Windows Explorer when connecting my tablet running ICS to my PC. The dev who wrote the ROM I am using has been working on a way to re-institute USM, but it is not fully operational. So at the moment I can only transfer "some" of those kinds of files. Not reliable.

I haven't seen Kies in action, but it may work, since it doesn't rely on USB. One thing that works (such as it is) is to implement the file handling FROM the tablet to a USB removable drive. But it is very slow by comparison, and then you still have to copy the files a second time from the drive to your PC, if that is where they are headed. I'm pretty happy using Cheetah Sync for the time being.

I don't have a phone running ICS, but I do have a Toshiba Excite 10 tablet (with SD slot) that is. When trying to copy a "non supported" file type, a box will pop up warning you that it may not play/work, but it gives you the option to copy anyway. As another mentioned, you may not see the "non supported" files on your computer, so you would have to delete them from the phone or tablet itself.

At least that is my experience with ICS and MTP.

My son lives north of Denver. As it turns out, I was looking at a collection of online photos of the High Park fire last night while we all chatted on here. Really terrible. He sees the smoke from home, but thankfully it is currently far from his neighborhood.

Yes, with the GS3 you should be able to do that. The thing that got me up in arms about the UMS issue is that Acer did something stupid when they laid out the Iconia A500 tablet. In addition to its "real" SD card, they have an area of internal storage which they describe as an "internal (non-accessible) SD card", and like idiots they named that area "SD Card" in the file tree. Apps looking for the SD Card tend to see THAT location and ignore the mnt/external-sd path where the real external SD card resides.

So, certain apps which would normally save their created files to your real SD Card default to putting the files there instead (and filling it up - it isn't very big). With UMS being supported in Honeycomb when the tablet was designed, I guess they didn't think forward about it. It was easy with Honeycomb to move the files off to your PC if you wanted to save them. But now that it has ICS, and the lack of UMS, those files your app saved (which you may want to back up) are essentially inaccessible from a PC by USB (unless they are photos or media).

I know there is a case thread but I am posting here while waiting for my S3 to ship :) It is painful to have all these nice cases and docks (bought the infuse car dock last night too) and still have no phone.

/me waits impatiently for new toy (I mean new work implement :))

Had not heard of MyPhoneExplorer, so I installed it on my Win7 PC to give it a try. Nice program, but it does not show 'all' the files in either the Memory Stick or the SD Card listings, which once again is typical of ICS' UMS omission demon at work. For example, I have a Titanium Backup folder on the internal storage (TIBU defaults there in this tablet, not on the SD card) which is not showing up. I also have the clockworkmod folder on the SD card (which holds my nandroid backups made from Recovery, and is one of the major folders I would back up to my PC) and that folder isn't showing up in MyPhone Explorer either. I also have a folder named "CWM_Zips" on the SD card which I was using to house nandroid file sets in zipped format during my experimenting with a workaround or the UMS issue. It is a folder of my own creation, holding zip files I created. Yet it, too, is not showing up in MyPhoneExplorer.

I like the interface, and it has some nice features. But it won't suffice as a workaround to the UMS omission problem if it can't get at all the files on the device.
 
Checked out the S3 at the TMobile store today. All I have to say is wow! Not anything what I expected it to be! The build quality was great and actually didnt feel cheap at all like the videos depicted. Its actually not to big either and the home button is quite nice. The phone itself for whatever reason didnt get any reception so I couldnt test out anything else. All my doubts about this phone are gone :D

One thing I do have to add though, is I could immediately notice its pentile screen. I have poor vision mind you and I wasnt even looking that close into the screen. However I believe it was slightly improved from the Nexus and it shouldnt bother me too much

Wouldn't having a metal case be bad in general, and affect not only NFC, but also bluetooth, wifi and even the cell signal?

This is a maybe. There are a number of factors that make this an "it depends" situation.

I am a Ham Radio op and understand antenna design. In this case with the top mounted antenna (breakdown video) it may not interfere at all. There are a number of tests that could be run to verify loss.

I do agree with you on principle however if the antenna are very omni-directional then it may still allow the signal to propagate.
 
The only thing i can think of why it would be delayed so long with Verizon is that they would be branding the phone....

So would it change your mind about it if we end up with a huge Verizon logo on the front?

No...the only reason I wouldn't buy this phone is if for some reason it had an apple on the back of it.
 
I want to come out with the jPhone that has a Pear on the back. "J" is further up the alphabet and pears are more expensive than apples.

I can charge an extra $50.00 per device over those "i" devices and run a skin over Android that makes it look like it is running JOS ;).

I can also change my name to Steve Kobs just to make it legit :)

People will sleep in the streets to be first in line to get this device!

Your last statement seems to echo the opinions of some of the metal case vendors I have been browsing since I posted the question. I can't find much online in the way of verifying a metal case might be a problem. I even looked on Tom's Hardware Guide and didn't see anything. What I am finding though are tons of metal cell phone cases. Their sheer numbers seems to indicate that they don't present problems, or else I think I would have found a number of complaints as well.

There are some interesting designs out there, including a screwed together solid titanium clam shell case (with slotted holes for its iPhone's antenna area) and one that embeds an iPhone into a set of brass knuckles. That one could trigger a forum thread of its own, I think. :D
 
Well everybody I decided to visit a local T-Mobile store today to check out the GS3 and I have to say it's simply amazing. I mainly went there to settle once and for all if I wanted the Pebble Blue version or not and I will say it looks gorgeous in person, and even though I love white I'm definitely glad I pre-ordered the Pebble Blue instead, just the texture of it gives it a much more premium look than the white IMHO. I would say it definitely looks more graphite than blue or purple to me which is good because otherwise I would've gone with the white, the only thing I don't like is the blueish metallic rim, I would've much preferred a metallic trim like on the white.

The display on this thing is amazing, I don't see how anyone could find any faults with it, the blacks are dark and the colors are vivid. Not only this but the phone itself was blazing fast, after going back to my car and pulling out my OG Inc I was definitely left in wanting. Only about one more week left guys, hang in there, this thing is amazing! :D
