Dogfish or Harpoon IPA help with my Samsung Galaxy S3 decision making ;)

Made my decision on SGS3 weeks ago (32 GB, Pebble Blue FYI). . . more like helping with the waiting at this point.

Yeungling

C'mon Man!

Come on, bro. I'm from Philly and Yuengling is garbage compared to a good IPA. Especially a local IPA that comes in a can. Bottles are overrated. :smokingsomb:

Edit: I'm drinking Yuengling right now - not hating. haha.

I suppose, if I must drink american light/premium lager then yuengling it is. What IPA in cans are you referring to here?

A friend recommended an app called "AirDroid" to me. While it can't read the external SD card on the S3 (yet), it can transfer files to the internal memory via web browser. It's an interesting app. You should check it out with your GNex and see if it's a viable workaround for you.

The short story is that when Google started developing Android 4, they decided to abandon one of those 4 USB connection options you mention (I have only ever seen 3), namely USB Mass Storage (USM). From what I have read, they switched to only allowing two (Windows) protocols - PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) and MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), either of which essentially look at the type of files on your Android 4 device and then refuse to allow transfer (by USB, understand) files not deemed belonging to the realms of pictures and media. Very Apple of them, IMO. Why? Well, one Galaxy Nexus forum thread supposedly coming from a Samsung tech claimed their ultimate goal is to eliminate all "outside hardware connections" and external memory devices (SD cards) from Android devices. Ostensibly to get away from the diversification of where programs and files are/can be/ stored, to make it easier on program developers to code for "a single uniform platform design". I'm not buying it.

Now, there ARE alternatives, as this issue is currently only affecting USB in Android 4 devices. What I have found is that I can use a free app called Cheetah Sync to wifi sync "any" files from my rooted Iconia A500 tablet's Internal Storage (SD Card) and External SD Card (this is the confusing mess I referred to as diversification ) over to my Win7 PC since I can't do it with a simple USB connection after flashing ICS. Bluetooth might also work but I haven't tried it.

If you research the issue, you'll encounter a supposedly renowned tech journalist who insists that any ICS device which has an external SD slot and USB socket are not affected by this and still support USM. He is dead wrong. It doesn't work on my tablet, and it also doesn't work on my son's stock Transformer TF201 which came with ICS. Both have the hardware mentioned, and neither can transfer files which are not pictures or media. For me, not being into either of those categories, my tablet displays blank Windows Explorer windows when connected, where when it ran Honeycomb my PC was able to see and access every file in those locations and copy any I wanted back and forth to the same PC. I do so weekly as precautionary backups, having endured total SD card failure a few times (lost everything).

Under the PTP/MTP USB connection, there is no popup in the Android Notifications, no popup in Windows to show a device has been connected, and no "Safely Remove" icon available in Windows task tray when you plug in the device. It just shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer (however blank, for me).

I'm just curious how we would go about getting documents (.pdf files, .doc files, excel spreadsheets, and the like) on the phone. Are they considered media files, or do you need to use the Kies program or some other app to get them on there?

I appreciate the suggestions and potential fixes, but none of them seem any better than what I currently do now. Even before my AOKP ROM, I could plug in my Nexus and copy docs, pdfs, etc. to and from the device. When copying non-media stuff, I had to approve of every different file type once during the transfer which was annoying.

What I don't understand is why I have to respond to the same prompts for copying MP3 files over that I know are supported media. Even photos sometimes inform me that it's not a supported file type, and I have to approve it.

All those types you mention are definitely not within the "allowed" types of files with PTP and MTP. Thus, my seeing what appear to be empty storage locations in Windows Explorer when connecting my tablet running ICS to my PC. The dev who wrote the ROM I am using has been working on a way to re-institute USM, but it is not fully operational. So at the moment I can only transfer "some" of those kinds of files. Not reliable.

I haven't seen Kies in action, but it may work, since it doesn't rely on USB. One thing that works (such as it is) is to implement the file handling FROM the tablet to a USB removable drive. But it is very slow by comparison, and then you still have to copy the files a second time from the drive to your PC, if that is where they are headed. I'm pretty happy using Cheetah Sync for the time being.

Does Kies work with the Nexus? I'm going to look into this. My main annoyance, however, is that with my Fascinate, I can drag files right out of the iTunes library (I know, evil evil iTunes ... sorry. We own a couple of iPods in the family, and it's easy and consistent to use across multiple computers, etc...) onto the SD card. With the Nexus, I can't. I have to open the file's containing folder and copy from Windows explorer to the device. This is otherworldly frustrating. That's one reason I want removable storage. Then ICS on my S3 can do whatever the blanketyblank it wants, but I can still slap that card in a card reader and go right straight out of iTunes, web browsers that support drag and drop to and from cloud storage, email attachments, etc. right onto the card. Yeah, it's a pain to take out, but it will be one extra step for ALL files done only ONE TIME, not taking extra steps for each file format or each group/folder of files.

I don't have a phone running ICS, but I do have a Toshiba Excite 10 tablet (with SD slot) that is. When trying to copy a "non supported" file type, a box will pop up warning you that it may not play/work, but it gives you the option to copy anyway. As another mentioned, you may not see the "non supported" files on your computer, so you would have to delete them from the phone or tablet itself.

At least that is my experience with ICS and MTP.

I have a documents folder, an eBooks folder, and other folders of junk I keep on my Nexus, and they seem to copy back and forth and delete just fine, but I always have to elect to copy anyways at those above-mentioned prompts.

This is really random, but one of the the things im excited about on this phone is testing out the headphones that come with the phone. I'm a bit of a headphone junkie and I like in-ear headphones. JULY 10TH CANT COME SOON ENOUGH

I have heard thus far that they are actually quite decent for being included with a Samsung phone. Of course that's second hand, but I'll take it for now, until my S3 is in my hands.

Edit: Bah. Bad news. I've always heard good stuff mostly about Kies Air. Oh well ...

Let me bring this thread back on topic. ;)

The California judge has granted Apple a second pre-trial injunction within a week. This time is on the Galaxy Nexus.
Apple scores second legal win vs Samsung in a week | Reuters

That makes me think that a pre-trial injunction on the Galaxy S III might be imminent. Verizon better hurry up and delivery my phone.

Only a little, remember they started this trial back in January or so. And were refused to allow the GS3 into this case. They need to request a new case. Which will take just as long most likely to get to this point. And if the GNex trial falls flat any attempt on the GS3 then will likely fall flat just as quick.

Have had a GN since release day last December, and after 5 different replacement phones including a new one out of the box, I have decided the Galaxy Nexus radios suck. It is simply not ready for prime time as a 4G phone. In fact, I think of it as a 3G phone in terms of speed and its ability to acquire and keep a 4G signal, even if sitting next to a 4G tower.

My question is.... any word on the VZW S III radios yet? For me, it would be a waste of money to even consider it if the radio situation has not been improved. I am hoping they have been improved significantly.

Welcome to the forums!! We won't know about the radio issue until this phone is released & out there for people to really find out. They can claim its better, but claims aren't fact.

I know I'm new here so I'll probably get stomped on by the "Brew Crew" but isn't this thread supposed to be about phones? I know it's easy to get a little off topic and I've been guilty of that from time to time on many different forums. But after numerous posts about beer shouldn't you just move it to the Lounge forum? I bring this up not because I'm the self-proclaimed forum police but because I have been following this thread to read about the release of the SGS3 and not to constantly get email notifications about "My beer is better than your beer." Yeah, yeah, I know...If ya don't like it don't read it @$$h*l#!!! Hopefully the members of this Android phone forum have a little more self control than that. Thanks.

I completely disagree. I had 3 Gnex's over the course of 4 months..One was returned due to a faulty battery on December 20th a couple days after launch. The other two were sold off because i could not make up my mind between iOS and ANdroid so i went back to the iphone for a couple weeks in between each Gnex I had. So in the 4 or so months that i actually had a Gnex reception was solid the entire time up here in NH. I constantly had 4-5 bars all the time and was getting download speeds of 30d/15u...And this was all over New England, just not where i lived. None of the 3 Gnex's I had, had any issues at all.

While lurking the forum Verizon email notification popped up. I git all excited, thinking yay! They decided to surprise us! Then I realized it's Saturday, and the email was just the stinkin' newsletter.:( Oh well, I'm really not expecting it to ship before the 9th anyway.

We're just killing time. Got a little less than two weeks before anything happens with our phones.

Yeah, I get it. But of the 27 posts prior to mine, 22 of them were about beer. I thought that was what the lounge was for. I get email notifications for new posts to this thread and reading post after post about beer is getting old. I have nothing against beer. If I want to read endless posts about them I'll go to a beer forum. I was hoping Phandroid forums were a little more on topic. I guess this thread has turned into the beer thread and I need to unsubscribe. No moderators on this forum?

Benny,

From time to time threads do get off topic no big deal. I mean hello, half of the 40 something pages of this thread are about unlimited data stuff. So it happens, sit back have a Coke & a smile & feel free to get the conversation back on track.

Ok, I'll start for you. Who is going by Sprint tomorrow to take a look at the S3 as July 1 is their launch day.

T-Mobile have had the S III demo models in store for a few days now. That's how I got to check one out in person. I'm not even in a big city (population around 300K) so other T-Mo stores probably have it too.

I went out to lunch w/ my wife yesterday & there was a T-Mobile store right next door to the restaurant we ate at. The whole time I kept thinking I should go in there because they might have it, but my city was not on the early launch list. After reading your post I think I just out smarted myself. :(

I just went to Tmobile and played with a GS3. The pebble purple...errrrr blue is not quite what I expected:( If I had to do it over again I think I would have ordered white.

Holy cow this thing is thin. Im pretty amazed Samsung was able to pack in a 2100 mAh battery and make this thin... much thinner than my Gnex with the 2100 mAh battery!!! It felt very good in the hand. After holding one I am surprised that some reviews said it felt cheap/plasticky.

Didn't like Twiz but rooting will solve that.

This phone is FAST!!! With bubbles live wallpaper going it didn't stutter at all (that I noticed). My Gnex on 4.0.4 stutters like simple Jack with bubbles live wallpaper.

I feel the same way. If I had it to do over again I would have ordered white also. Once I see the white in person I may just do an exchange. :)

So now Verizon's in a real pickle, I imagine: trying to balance its release date with a potential injunction and sales ban!

Will VZW actually hold off and possibly not sell millions of units because they sat on release? Or will they ship out what they can?

All I know is this: if the SGS3 falls through, unsold, pre-orders cancelled and unlimited data gone from the picture, I would foresee a whole lot of customers jumping ship instead of paying full retail for their next phone (whatever it is). Not everyone's in my unfortunate situation wherein VZW is the only signal/4G in town. I may be stuck, but unless they (a) get this phone into the hands of the customers who pre-ordered, or (b) extend a rain check on unlimited data to the pre-orders that had to be cancelled (FIGURE THE ODDS!), there's gonna be a customer mutiny.

My 0.02 :)

I doubt this will happen. BUT if they wait, and it is banned I will leave Verizon on principle alone. Likely back to AT&T who isn't much better, but they haven't screwed me yet. But I doubt that it will be blocked any earlier than 6 months from now if at all.
