[Verizon] Titanium Backup noob...

Alright guys. I can't seem to find a straight answer so I'm going to ask here. I've never used Titanium Backup simply because it seems very confusing and somewhat redundant with the Play Store. Now I want to be able to save all my apps and their data and reinstall them easily if I try new ROMs. So I have a few questions:

1) Titanium Backup saves all your info to your SD card right? But, when you flash a new ROM it formats the internal card in the GNEX doesn't it?

2) So first step is backing up the apps + system data. But, if I flash a new ROM I should only restore the apps and NOT the data correct? Due to issues between ROMS?

3) Is the SYSTEM DATA the same as the data for the apps such as saved files for games and saved preferences?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out with this =-/

I'll try and answer these, but I know others are better with Titanium than me.

1) When you wipe before flashing a ROM your /sdcard folder is just fine, so your backups are good. You do need to either create a Titanium Backup update.zip to reinstall it after you flash or just install it from the Play store after you flash and then you can restore.

2) I normally just restore apps in general without data. There are some exceptions and those I restore data on individually. In Titanium it shows a list of your apps. Touching on them will allow you to restore data after you've restored all your apps.

3) System data is not from your apps. I only restore regular apps (listed in green) and nothing from system, listed in red.

I hope this helps.

When you run a backup, it makes a folder in your /sdcard folder. You can copy this to your cpu but flashing a new rom does not wipe this folder anyway so it is not 100% necessary although recommended. Just do apps+data and not system data. After you flash, go to the play store and download titanium backup again. Then, when you open it, you can "restore" all apps+data and you are good to go. Many people report problems when restoring system data which is why I say don't even bother with it.

Ok awesome! I had no idea the phone reserves part of the SD card and didn't format it. So last question really is how do I disable the play store from automatically reinstalling all of my apps so that I can just do it with TI?

On the phone, goto settings > Backup & Reset and uncheck the option to "Back up my data".

Will that just stop Google from reinstalling all of my apps or will it stop backing up all of my personal data too?

I think there may be a few onboard phone settings that may be affected too so if you wipe data when flashing roms, you may have to reset a few phone settings. But those are pretty minor, so much of this phone revolves around Google apps and those settings do stay in tact because when you re-install the Gapps and enter your Google login credentials, things like older Google Voice messages, Talk settings, Google + stuff, etc all comes back anyway. From what I can tell, the only things you don't save are a few items like wifi password and maybe default ringtone/notification and a few items of that nature.

Yeah when you uncheck the box to back up your data, it will automatically "gray out" the option for auto restore. Unchecking the top option on that screen is all you need to do.

Ok so just to double check that I got this. Uncheck that box so that when I flash a new ROM the store won't automatically restore all of my apps. To use TI all I need to do is backup my apps and not system data. Then just restore the apps if/when I flash new ROMs correct?

FWIW, what I've done with my DX and later RAZR MAXX was to backup all apps + system data, then when restoring I just deselect anything in green or red. It's always worked like a charm.

Correct on all accounts. I do in fact back up system data just in case but I rarely restore it. Anyway, that's neither here nor there, your plan looks great. So after you flash a new rom, head to the market and re-download Titanium and then proceed to restore your apps and their individual data.
