[Verizon] Un-root method corrupted my stock recovery

Hello all,

I have used this method to unroot my phone and put it back on stock 4.0.2:
[HOW TO] Unroot the VZW GN, Re-Lock the bootloader and Start Factory Fresh

I previously had 4.0.4 stock rooted with CWM recovery. The un-root method at that site worked; my phone is unrooted, but I have 2 problems: one major and one minor.

The major problem is that the stock recovery image seems to be corrupt. I can bring up the bootloader, but when I select recovery I am taken to an image of an android with a red triangle with an exclamation point. I have googled this, but all solutions I have found involve flashing CWM. I don't want to, as I want my phone to be 100% stock with stock recovery so I can receive OTA updates without losing root(if they EVER come), and use Google Wallet, and ultimately stop this madness of rooting and re-rooting and just ENJOY my GNex, instead of constantly worrying about its OS. So, can anybody inform me of how to fix my STOCK recovery? Again, I DON'T want CWM.

The minor problem is that I can't seem to update the google+ app since unrooting. Every other one of my 75+ apps downloaded and updated just fine, it's only G+ that failed. It gives me the following message when I try:
'Update for "google+" could not be downloaded due to an error. (941)'
Clearing cache/data and force stopping G+ doesn't solve this, either. This problem is miniscule compared to the recovery issue I'm having, but if anyone has an answer for this as well, I'd be much appreciative.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:
As can be seen in the below posts, the "dead android" image is actually normal, unless there are specific files present for the stock recovery to interact with. Also, re-flashing recovery "fixed" the google+ issue. Please see Scary Alien's posts for more detail.

Thank you for the reply, Scary Alien. However, after flashing that recovery image, I am still having the same issue ("dead android" - red triangle with '!').

Can anyone send me a screenshot of what the stock recovery is SUPPOSED to look like? Perhaps the "dead" android is not really a problem? Maybe it is what it is.... Anybody know?

bevardimus,

Ah, didn't quite understand your issue initially...what makes you think that the custom stock recovery is corrupt?

When you flash the stock recovery and boot into recovery, you will see the the Android laying down on his back, with his chest plate open, and the red triangle an exclamation mark in it. That is proper.

I just flashed the 4.0.2 stock recovery and am staring at the screen (actually, it just rebooted after a few minutes--pretty cool--didn't know it would do that on its own ;) :)).

I think your phone is okay :).

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

So... Android's stock "recovery" is non-existent then? Seems a little strange they have the recovery option there at all, if it is absolutely worthless on stock.

Nevertheless, thanks for the confirmation, Scary Alien. It certainly makes me feel a little better knowing my phone isn't the only one that shows that! You have a good day, sir.

Just want to make sure we're on the same page, here: I'm not using a custom recovery, nor did I think that CWM was corrupt when I was using it...

Not sure what you mean by this sentence. Please clarify?

Well, I wouldn't say non-existent ;) :) (since there's a ~5 MB file that I keep flashing for this ;)).

It's just that the stock recovery is very (very) bare-bones and doesn't have all of the nice menus, etc. that something like ClockworkMod or Amon_RA custom recoveries do.

The stock recovery will only interact with you when conditions are right...say, when there's an appropriate update.zip file, etc. in the top-level of the /sdcard, etc. (i.e., it looks for very specific, named, signed files). I'm not as familiar with the stock recovery on the GNex as I am with the one on the HTC Droid Eris, but I'm certain that the principles and behavior is the same.

Hope that helps more...cheers!

So, just to absolutely clarify (because I'm anal): the stock recovery will only ever show any kind of interface if the files are present to interact with (update.zip, etc.). Otherwise, if no such files are present, stock recovery will simply show an android lying down, open-chested, with a red triangle '!'. Is this statement correct?

Yes, sir! (or at least, that's always been my experience--various devices ;) :)).

By the way, sorry, I didn't see this reply earlier...

Yeah, I meant / saw that you said the stock recovery was corrupt...I simply mis-typed...meant to say "stock" and instead wrote "custom" (my bad--I'm so used to typing "custom recovery" :)).

I'll edit my post so others won't be confused--sorry about that :o.

:)

All righty then! I feel much better now, Scary Alien! You have been most helpful.

And an fyi for anyone following this thread: When I re-flashed the stock recovery image that Scary Alien pointed me to, I had to unlock the bootloader again, thus resetting my phone and starting fresh. Again. Google+ fixed itself this time around, though, so that problem was ALSO solved by Scary Alien! (even if it was sort of accidental :-))

Anyway, thanks again Alien!

I know this is a little late... but this is the best method of rooting, unlocking, restocking, relocking, etc... I've found. It is really as simple and foolproof as you can get!

Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit | WugFresh

Mahalo,

Thanks, but I already knew about that tool. It's very cool that Wug made that and everything, but I'm the kind of anal retentive person that needs to do manually do all the steps myself, or else I don't feel right
