[Verizon] Verizon JB destorys battery.. questions about rooting..

OnePump

Newbie
Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. Apologies if this is a repeat/dumb question but...

I upgraded to JB OTA last Friday and its been destroying my battery. Tried disabling as many apps as I could (like currents and maps via location settings.. etc).. but my battery is still getting slaughtered compared to stock ICS.

Thinking about pulling the trigger and finally unlocking and rooting this beast. I'm assuming that custom Roms and kernels influence battery life quite a bit.. anybody have any suggestions on quick ones I should use?

Thanks ya'll..

android revolution makes a nice rom, heres a link to some more choices for ya: ---> Galaxy Nexus ROMS

Depends what you want from the ROM really. If you want a close to stock experience, I'd say go with Bugless Beast. If you want a ton of features, I'd suggest JBSourcery. If you want something in the middle, I'd go with AOKP or BAMF or Xenon.

Good point, Viper. I guess since I've never jumped into the pool of unlocking and what not, I’d probs want something close to stock.

Mainly though, I’m looking for an improvement on battery life. Something that lasts ridiculously long.

Perhaps I should just start experimenting and trying them out myself.

It really does vary with everyone's uses. I, like you, just recently upgraded mine on Saturday to JB via OTA and the battery life was sickening. So last night i rooted and put just a custom kernel on. I'm going to see how that does for a few days. Today i got 13 hours of "my type usage" before having to charge it. So we'll see.

Custom Kernel? As in you built it yourself? Or is this something that is available to the general public?
Two days on Verizon OTA JB and it

And, quite frankly, the only reason I haven’t unlocked and rooted yet was because I’m don’t wanna lose all of my apps. It took a long time to get as far as I have in some of my games! I’m a nerd.. I’m cool with that.

Welcome to the forums, OnePump! :)

Which ROM to pick? That all depends on how much customization you want.

If you want to stay pretty close to stock (much like the Verizon version), you can try Jelly Belly or Bugless Beast. Codename Android and XenonHD are great if you want to add in more options.

But if you want to flat out modify just about everything on your phone, I have to suggest JBSourcery. The customization options are nearly endless: from softkey mods to boot animations to kernel to the font you want to use... you can adjust and change just about everything. It's currently in version 2.3 and is fast, stable and good on battery.

While I have your attention as a prospective rooter/ROMmer, OnePump, let me preach to you just a little about the importance of nandroid backups.

A nandroid is a backup made in Recovery - either ClockworkMod or (my fave) TWRP - that takes a snapshot image of the entire phone's current state and compresses all that into a zip file in your internal memory. It's VITAL to make a backup just before doing anything fancy to your phone... if something goes wrong (and it occasionally will), you can wipe the phone and restore that nandroid. And everything will be right back, as it was, at the moment you made the backup.

Backups are great maintenance, as well. Make a weekly backup just in case and keep the most recent 2 on the phone. If you get hung up, restore is just a couple of minutes away.

Good luck rooting/ROMming and we're all here to support you! :D

I have found the same thing that trophynuts mentioned. Stock kernel eats battery for lunch. I've tried several kernels on many different roms and I can't find anything better than Leankernel for JB on the Gnexus.

Do you have Google Now enabled? If so disable it. It's a massive drain on the battery. Make sure location sharing in lattitude is disabled too. Once these two things are disabled you should see similar battery life as ICS as far as stock roms go.

You need to download a battery app to see if anything is preventing your phone from going to sleep. Apps preventing the phone from sleeping is the major cause of massive battery drain.

As far as custom roms check out JellyBelly. It's prob the most stable, quickest, fewest bugs, and very close to stock Jellybean rom available. Then try leankernel or franco's kernels.

Thanks Chief and iowabowtech for the suggestions. The customization of JBSourcery sounds pretty tempting.. might have to go with that and Leankernel.

Just a one off question: I read a lot about people on here talking about radios. Are those something that is included in the Rom and/or Kernel or is this something else that I have to flash? I know.. I'm a noob.

plemonjello: I've got Google Now disabled.. no location settings turned on. I've been using CPU spy as well to make sure that it's going to deep sleep and it is. I've disabled just about everything I can and it's still is about half the ICS battery life. To be honest, I'm a little surprised that the battery life on JB isn't a bigger issue on the boards..

If your radios are working well now, they will continue to work with the JB ROM of your choice... they are completely separate. However, if you WANT the 4.1.1 radios (FF02/FG02) then I can provide that for you. It's a separate flash, preferably in its own recovery session ( I'm overly cautious :D ), and helped my signal strength a little over the ICS radios.

And we were ALL n00bs at one time. Pretty soon, Pump, you'll be helping other people out... that's what makes these forums great! We learn and grow together.

If you are on the fence about rooting... I'd just advise doing a factory reset to help solve your battery issues. The upgrade process to JB can cause files to become "tangled" which may be the cause of the high battery drain. The unlocking process wipes your phone anyway, so it may be worth it to just try a factory reset first.

I agree. I found that leaving too many features of Google Now active drained the battery. Particularly the location related ones like traffic, places, etc. I only run weather and appointments (and have been playing with places a little to test). The thing was, nothing glaring shows up in battery stats.... until you look closely. Location services can appear as 4 or more different services/apps so even though no one particular service shows excessive partial wakelocks, if you add up the 4 different location related ones you find the problem.

I have done a lot to give my phone the best battery life that it can get whilst keeping Google Now active all day, on wifi and 4G.

Basically i have a nightly of CM10 on my phone now and i bought an extended battery

Links below to both:

Amazon.com: Hyperion Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus 3800mAh Extended Battery + Back Cover (Compatible ONLY with Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus SCH-i515) NOW WITH NFC CAPABILITIES: Cell Phones & Accessories

CyanogenMod Downloads
(FYI This is the VZW version)

Basically i go all day 7am - 11pm is my schedule, and then at 11pm, my battery is around 60% on heavy usage even. On wifi all day at work, and 4G on drives, google now and lattitude always telling me to check in at places and what not, doesn't matter, my phone eats through everything.

If you accepted the official OTA from VZW, you should already have the latest .10 radios.

I also found and use a use a file called BATTERY BOOSTER!!!.zip that seems to help no matter what rom I'm on. It can only be applied if you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, though. If you want it, it's in my Samsung collection linked in my sig.

I get about 2 days (yes 48hrs) on my AOKP M5 (ICS) w/Trinity kernel and almost 1-1/2 days on Jelly Bean roms w/Trinity, but I don't have the thing in my hands constantly.

good luck

I noticed when G-Now is enabled that 3 instances of Maps are running in Apps/running.

i'm on my third different JB rom and still seeing bad battery life. I'm going to try another one tonight.

screen on time is still what seems to be butchering my battery.

Try BlackBean. I don't think Google Now is included. I'm running it now for giggles and like it. AOKP is my mother ship though.

If you like inverted you will like the Bean. Be sure and get his Inverted GAPPS.

Franco #13 kernel with CNA ICS rom yielded the best on screen time ever with 4G and all sync on, 3 hours and 15 minutes with 5% remaining. I don't know what happened in the later kernels/roms, can never hit that again. :(
