Root [Verizon] WOW! What a week..

Can anyone educate me on this *jig* device that is available to get me back to having life in my device? I've come across them as I have read various threads but never dreamed I'd ever in a million years need to employ the *magic* of one! Thanks

Well, here it is the 10th day since my insurance claim. I was to return my damaged device within that time-frame but have not received my new (bricked) device from the JTAG service guy in TX! YIKES! What to do, what to do...

I'll likely get the device from him on Monday or Tuesday and he seems confident he will be able to restore life to it! My concern is that he may find it is NOT restorable and if I go ahead and return my current *working* (but cracked screen) device, I'll be up a creek.

I will be 'fined' $150 if I don't return the damaged one but hey, I could sell the damaged one on eBay (with full disclosure, of course)..

The other thing too, is that I am not sure if they needed to RECEIVE the unit by the 10th day or if it is POSTMARKED by the 10th day... Oh well, just kinda rambling:smokingsomb:

You can call Verizon and ask them to give you a couple more days to sent it back.?

You were very busy at work and cut yourself shaving and need more time:)

Got a 'courtesy' call from the insurance provider that covers my device and that sent me the new S3 just reminding me that I had not returned the damaged device. I did not answer the call, it went to my voicemail. I decided to call them back...

I told them exactly what happened...

"Let me be straight up with you...I root my devices. In my attempt at rooting the new device, I must have downloaded a corrupted file and basically 'bricked' it! I had to send it off to TX to get it repaired and am expecting it back any day....I will be returning the damaged device but need to wait until I get the other one."

Well, the fellow was very nice about it and said that he has given an extension to Oct 6 for me to return it! So, I am happy that they are easy to work with under such circumstances :). Stay tuned...for further developments! :D

JUST got an email telling me my device CAN NOT be unbricked because of damaged EMMC. What is an EMMC?

OKAAAAY. Now I suppose I really do have a brick :banghead:

Oh no!! I'm not quite clear on what that is but I think its the memory chip. How it got damaged from the first file you tried to flash? Not sure.
Wow, I feel bad for you man :(
I don't suppose you could talk to that same guy from the insurance provider?

I googled a little about EMMC. still a little confuzzled about it.
Embedded Multimedia Memory Card/Chip?

Yeah man, I am bummed. Can't believe I bricked a device...but it has brought this whole rooting thing into perspective. Wow... thanks for looking into it Mike, I'll likely spend time trying to figure it out too...

Plan B... not sure..:banghead:

Another hump on this roller coaster I'm riding!

Mike, I believe the place I have discovered this morning is the very one you made reference to last week. They are saying on their website that if you have had the JTAG service but been notified that the eMMC is damaged, they are the next stop. They will replace it.

I sent them an email asking if they bring it back to factory firmware or do they simply get it back to where I can get into download mode. Just wanted to know...! Stay tuned :D

The device has been received by MobileTechVideo as of today. So, it should be back in my hands by the first of next week I'm thinking. This time, working - I HOPE!

I did call and talk to them before committing and was told that they would prefer to run the JTAG service themselves, just to confirm that the eMMC is or is not damaged. We'll see...

Sent to MobileTechVideo and they confirmed the eMMC chip was toast.

Several days went by without hearing anything from them so I decided to call. I gave the very nice young lady the order # then she put me on hold. When the call resumed, it was a guy named Josh (I believe I asked if he was owner and he said he was) and he told me that when he heard that I was on the line, he wanted to speak with me. He was very courteous and very detailed with what had been done. He explained that they replaced the chip and much to his horror...it WOULDN'T come back to life. But he did say that he knew that there was 'life' in there somewhere but for the life of me, I cannot remember those details! I do know that he told me that he has done this operation on the SCH-I535 "at least 200 - 25 times..." and NEVER had one do this!

Bottom line was that he would go ahead and replace the motherboard (at no additional cost) and he said it WOULD work then. I just received it today and it does indeed work! WOOOHOOO! I've got an S3 without a cracked screen - although I DO have a lighter wallet after this crazy ordeal! I had him root it - for $10 I couldn't go wrong! So now it is charging up and then i need to put in my SIM card and get it back to the way I have currently.

stick around guys...I'm sure to have a question or two!:D

Holy moly dk! A month of this rigmarole? Sheesh. Glad you got your device back, working:)

Can you believe this! It has been a long wait to get it back but now it's working - well, when I put in my SIM card and restore all my stuff! This is the part I always hate when changing ROM's

The new one doesn't have any Google accounts added yet so I was wondering what would be the best approach adding back my apps and settings, etc. I think TiBu will be my choice but must be sure I've got a fresh backup of everything I want to keep.

Question...I will be making a fresh nandroid. Wouldn't it work to simply do a nand restore on the new device? Seems reasonable to me...but hey, it's because of ME that I'm having to do this in the first place! :o

I suppose in my opinion, I would set up your google accounts and make a nandroid backup.

Then flash your rom and use TB to restore your apps/settings.

As far as doing a nandroid restore, are you talking about restoring a backup to your new device, made from another device?

The new device already has CarbonRom 1.8 installed but nothing else. I had them root it and install Carbon. There's no Google acct setup yet..

And yes, I'm asking if I can simply make a nandroid of my current device (the broken one), then get the new one going and restore the nandroid onto it?

I have heard of others doing that, yes....taking a nandroid backup from an old device and restoring it to another, new, identical device such as ours.

My opinion? It may work, and if it doesn't, at least you have a nandroid backup:)

What recovery did they put on it?

Crap! I JUST looked...CWM

Guess I'll need to wait until I have my sim card loaded and am ready to start using the device before I can switch to TWRP?

EDIT: NM! I already did it through goo.im app after inserting SIM card!

lol....I assume your backup was made with TWRP eh? :)

Load it up man! I see your new device is charged up already...the light is green :p

HaHa! Yes it was indeed made using TWRP.

Well, I've done the TiBu restore and seems to be working ok EXCEPT for some reason I cannot get my System Settings to open! Any idea?

Does it force close, or do you get a "not responding" message?

Did it happen after the TB restore?

It does nothing! No messsage, no FC. When I touch the Menu button, I select System Settings and nothing happens...

I went to recovery and was going to try the nand restore but recovery is not seeing my sdcard or micrs-sdcard!!! What's up?!

i wiped Dalvik and Cache, Fix permissions and have rebooted, now let's see......

EDIT: Nothing. Crap.
