Root Very new and a question about after rooting

Smerks

Newbie
I didnt see this answered anywhere I looked but once I root Im unclear as to what to do in say 3 months if theres an OS update. Ill be using the method from this thread.

[GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail for Dummies (written by a dummy)
(sry cant link but its a thread here.)

After I do all this and have my phone rooted and I install CTmod with Koumakernell, when the next update comes I am assuming I will have to wait for this rom/kernel to be updated here and no update is offered OTA. I know this sounds kind of obvious but Im just making sure. Also would it even offer the latest update to the OS if Im rooted and have CTMod? If it did and I clicked yes upgrade what consequences could there be, if any?

Also, if I decide to up the size memory card do I have to do this all again or can I just copy the card Im replacing to the new one.

You would make a backup (in cwm), copy your sd card to your pc, partition the new card, copy the files from pc to new card, and restore your backup from the new card (to put the things that were in your sdext into the new sdext)

once rooted, will pretty much always be and when changing card will just have to format card and partition again won't have to root again. also this thread might or will get moved to the rooted section so if can't find look in there for it.

on ct mod you will never get updates. and never update when rooted it could might cause a big bad problem.

Im sorry if I put it in the wrong place, I was thinking in terms of my Prevail but I assume this would be kind of universal.

no problem just a guide or mod will see it and then move it to right place and you might wonder where went. is ok though.

OK I did everything from the guide and all seemed well, I replaced the launcher with Go Launcher just to check it out, still all was well.

I just installed Google Voice Search (not sure if this has anything to do with it)and when I went back to the phone Im now getting a notification saying there is an android system update of 7.4 MB, already downloaded. It looks like if I restart my prevail my worry becomes reality and I end up with major problems. What should I do to prevent this?

Well it shouldn't be an update for the system as in something new. As for the f e 16 update I don't know how many megabytes that was. I don't get the updates and you shouldn't be getting those type update either. Not really sure if that's the update for google voice can't remember it's been a while. Hopefully somebody else will come on and help you with that I'm not sure. Sorry.

i got rid of it on my phone this morning. it's in /data/cache . i deleted the zip file and rebooted, now it hasn't returned, yet. if your on CTMod you shouldn't get it (the update or notice) after that.

OOPs--- "/cache" ---

UnOOps ---no it was /data/cache, its in my brothers phone just now in /data/cache,11:49 am

my apologies to those that had to bear my small oldtimers memory.

Doing exactly this lost me every change I made as of yesterday.

ok, then when you put everything back on the SD-card, you can restore in CWM and get back everything

I did that as well and when I rebooted after I get a phone that looks exactly like it did when I was finished following the guide, no apps, no anything.

Did you partition the new card?
Did you restore the correct backup?
During the restore, did it show the sdext being restored?

yes.
only one backup so yes.
dont know.

Ummmmm.... ... Your doing it wrong? :D:D:D :lmao:

Seriously though... Not sure what isn't working for you... try this... In cwm, go to backup and restore> advanced restore> restore sdext

Well I did exactly what I did the 1st time and this time it seemed to take, thank you for the help.
