VillainROM and Ninphetamines Installation Guide and XDA Developer Problem

Ozhak

Newbie
I just bought SGSII 3 days ago and I am very happy with it. I am so interested in rooting my device since it offers a lot of advantages and one can use VillainROM, a very popular custom ROM, and install it with ninphetamine. The forum refers to XDA developer for installation guide and information most of the time.

But here is the problem. I have been spending hours and hours and hours looking at the website coming across terms such as BLN, stock kernel, stock sms, the stupid yellow triangle, modem, etc etc etc, and all I eventually got is a self doubt over my intelligence.

In my opinion, as a first time user of smartphone/android, XDA is for an advanced user and I find it intimidating and overwhelming. One of the users even warned about noobs asking question as they will be ignored, sound familiar? The information provided is also not very clear, leaving me assuming this and that.

When I joined this forum, I could see that the experts here are very friendly and are willing to answer some noob questions. :D

Hence, is it possible if one of the experts in the forum provide STEP BY STEP detail installation of Villain ROM, ninphetamines, all the associated firmware kernels, and also provide associated websites, etc etc? I also believe that there has to be a sticky note listing and explaining all the terms related to rooting, ROM, etc. This sticky note can be used for a reference for newbies like me

I am very sure that a lot of users here will be very grateful. We are not noobs, we are just newbies wanting to learn from experts and in turn will pass down the information on next generation of newbies.

Many Thanks
:)

Guide for rooting and villain rom install. (This was meant for if you are coming from KG6 Samsung firmware. Ideally you need to match the rooted kernel with the kernel you are running at the moment)

Thanks for the reply.

For your information I upgraded my firmware to XXKH3 and rooted it with CWM installed. If I want to boot into CWM recovery mode, do I just have to hold volume UP + home and press power to boot into CWM recovery mode?

Based on what you wrote, does it mean that if I want to install villainROM, I have to flash it with XXKH3 kernel? Or I can install the zip file via CWM?

Thanks again, any reply will be appreciated.

Yup, just keep 'em pressed until the recovery shows.

Now you have root and CWM you can use the latter to install via zip, yes. Copy the VillainROM-2.4.2-signed.zip file to /sdcard and boot into recovery. Use the "backup/restore" option to make a nandroid backup of your current working setup first so that you can restore in case of problems. Then do a full data wipe and install VillainROM via the zip file.

Your half way there already then. All you need to do is your back ups, then flash the villain zip. Yes to boot into recovery power off the phone the hold volume up, home and power key. You can also skip the last step as you should have KH3 modem which is newer than KG6.

Thanks Slug

Just want to make sure, you asked me to copy the zip file into /sdcard which means the internal storage right? not external SD card? And I can do that by connecting my device to computer?

So here is the process, correct me if I am wrong

Boot into recovery mode --> use the backup/restore option --> do a full data wipe --> install VillainROM

Can I use titanium backup instead to back up? Titanium backup can only backup your data to external SD right?

Now, sorry again for the stupid question, how do you install VillainROM after full data wipe?

Hei steslatt, you said I can skip the last step. Does it mean I do not have to flash it with XXKH3 kernel?

Any reply will be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

Correct on all. The external card isn't recognised when in recovery so be sure to place the zip in the internal memory.

Boot into recovery mode --> use the backup/restore option --> do a full data wipe --> install VillainROM

Correct again.

Titanium won't back up your /system, /boot and other partitions. The nandroid backup is like a complete image of the handset (think Norton Ghost for Android!) and is the ultimate disaster recovery tool.

Not stupid.... a full wipe (or factory reset) doesn't affect /sdcard, only /system and /data. The VillainROM zip file will still be there.

I think Steslatt was referring to the final optional step of the VR installation guide, where updating the modem is recommended. The kernel should be fine, although you'll lose the CWM app by wiping. Back it up with Titanium and restore after installing VR.

Suppose I have wiped. The zip file will still be there. Errmm... how do you then proceed to install it?

I am a bit worried about bricking my phone, so I have to make sure I get all the info right.

About the last step as mentioned by Steslatt about updating the modem. What is that for?

Also, in between each process in the procedure, do I have to wipe any cache? Since I read before that installing VillainROM is like installing a new firmware? Usually when I upgrade my firmware, I performed a cache wipe.

After you've wiped everything boot into ClockworkMod Recovery Mode by pressing and holding down Volume Up + Home + Power.

You'll get a set of options including
install zip from SD-card, use that to pick the Villian ROM.zip. Home button to select it and let it do its stuff and then reboot the phone.

I wipe the cache / dalvik as well before installing a ROM.

Thanks

For some reason, I forgot to perform full data wipe and proceeded to install the ROM. CAn I then perform full data wipe and re-install the ROM again?

Or is it enough to just perform full data wipe after installing the ROM? no problem will appear?

I really prefer not having to install back firmware, root it and reinstall the ROM again.

Just wipe, then reboot. If everything boots up ok and works it will be fine. If not just wipe and re-flash rom, but it should work without reflash.

I installed SicopatRom with Ninphetamine kernel ver. 2.0.5. How Do I update Ninphetamine to 2.1.2. Do I just flash it with CWM? Do I have to wipe any cache or data before I do it?

Just flash it with CWM. No wipe required.

I decided to eventually try VillainROM. I did nandroid backup, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe delvick cache and then flash VillainROM. After I reboot, the CWM icon is gone. When I shut down my device and boot in recovery mode, the CWM is active.

Why is that?

CWM icon you saw before is just an app. When you boot into recovery you boot into CWM recovery they are two different things. You only need the app really to get rid of the triangle.

I understand that. But sometimes I use that icon to install apk file from my internal storage. Is there any other way to install apk file from int storage without using CMW icon?

Yup, just keep 'em pressed until the recovery shows.

sorry you lost me. how do you do this nandroid backup? what is cwm? i have yet to install KH3.

how do you back up sms and contacts? and how do you restore them?

villain vs lightning rom? which is better?

lightning is based off kh3 btw, and no wiping required. what makes villain better? or worse?

id:com is not turning yellow. cable is fine, i use it to transfer files. suggestions?

assuming i use lightning, can if i flash it with kh3 again to get rid of the yellow triangle and still have the rom(phone is still rooted)?
