Root [Virgin Mobile] 3 more days till Gs3! And rooting!

It's been awhile... Before I flash the Carbon .zip, I need to format /system /cache /data and...was there anything else...?

In Philz, it's just called "Clean to Install New ROM" and is found under the Wipe Data/Factory Reset heading. Do you have a ROM ready to flash? Correctly modified and everything? Also GApps and one of the APN fixes will be needed if choosing an AOSP ROM. I just uploaded a good working copy of Carbon 4.3 to my DevHost, if you want a link just let me know.

Oooh, didn't think to look in Wipe Data (the "factory reset" part of that threw me off)... I DID modify a Carbon nightly (from the end of Nov?)... I don't have a GApps on there yet, and Carbon isn't considered an AOSP ROM, is it?y

I'd love any link you'd like to share... :-) (Is your 4.3 different from the nightly I downloaded?)

I just wanted to make sure you didn't run into any status 7 errors (bootloader mismatch). Sounds like you're ready for the ROM, but yes, you do need GApps, and make sure they are for 4.3. Will link you to the version of Carbon I ran for a month straight if you need it, as in you have a flash issue with the one you modded, otherwise just stick with the one you already have. Do you still need an APN fix as well, I'm guessing probably yes?

If Carbon is an AOSP ROM, then yes, I'll need an APN fix (not sure what that is yet)... I'll go hunt for GApps now... :)

The deal with the APN fix, in case you haven't read about it yet, is that flashing a Sprint ROM screws up data/phone connectivity because it includes the Sprint APN's, but your phone provider needs the matching VM ones. That is a short, non-technical explanation, but good enough for government work.

Makes sense. Are there any custom ROMs that DON'T need the APN fix on this phone?

Only if they were built for VM, which is rare. Not as bad as it sounds, and on 4.4 ROM's you just have to flash it once if you are dirty flashing subsequent versions of the same ROM. Some members on here have started incorporating the fixes into CM11 nightlies that they then post over here. Look for threads by @ajnycguy, @xstefen, and @ebildude123.

Not sure how the "Mount USB Storage" feature is supposed to work in PhilZ. I've selected it, but I'm not seeing the phone mounted to my Win8 machine...

All right, here is a good copy of the Paranoid Android 0-Day GApps that I used with Carbon 4.3.

And the thread you will want to be familiar with for APN fixes (download fix #2, and do some reading there as well). We are all very indebted to @MopedRyder, no doubt!

Nah, it doesn't concern me. Good to know about the 4.4 thing, tho...

Are you trying to sideload files from recovery? I would just boot back into system so that your computer will "see" your phone, make sure you have all the files you need, then boot back into recovery. Or, you can flash just the ROM, GApps are not required for it to flash properly. I actually recommend flashing GApps in a separate recovery session anyway.

Excellent! That seems like a newer GApps than the one I found... :)

Yeah, I hadn't copied GApps, etc, to the phone before I booted into recovery (I saw your "flash ROM first" instruction.) I was just trying to avoid booting back into stock...

I would actually recommend running Carbon 4.3 for a while just to get used to it and then just jump on the current Android KitKat builds, they are really awesome. I like CM11 and CyanFox a lot. Carbon is going to release theirs soon, so that is why I say run the 4.3 version for a while, it is so awesome and will give you something else to look forward to.

That was my thought, as well. I was poking around on the Carbon site, and saw their "4.4 is coming" announcement. Lot's of eager "chomping-at-the-bit" comments, too...! :)

Cool. I'm a file hoarder, so if I've used it, I keep it on my computer for all eternity. Chance are, if someone needs an older ROM, GApps, whatever, I have it. I even keep ROM's I don't really use, but that I downloaded and flashed just to see if they work. There are several options for GApps, as well as options within options as is the case with the Paranoid Android ones. Some people like a really full GApps package, I always debloat mine to get rid of the apps I never use.

I'm getting a "System Update is Ready to Install" Message. That's not the KNOX thing, is it?? I've been selecting "Install Later"... What else might it be?

And does Win8 NOT require a manual "eject" on USB devices before unplugging?? I can't find one...

Yeah, I check their site probably three times a day. Far and away the best ROM I have ever run, on any device.

Dammit. The carbon flash failed. ("assert failed...") I modified the script. Did I maybe forget to save the .zip?? I guess I have to restore the nandroid backup to transfer a new .zip to the phone?

Let me link you my copy. Flash it to get it running, and then use it for comparison purposes to the one you did. Also, don't accept any system updates while on stock, at all costs!
