Root [Virgin Mobile] 3 more days till Gs3! And rooting!

Correct on the Win8, I have it on my laptop and I just plug/unplug with no issues.

You can mod it on your PC and put it in the SD card if you don't want to restore.

Also you can check out the midnight ROM for a great modified stock ROM that doesn't need any changes to flash/ use.

Man, that system update thing is quite insidious! It went and put itself in the notification tray to "reboot and install"... :mad:

It looks like your Carbon installed quite nicely...! I'm assuming my next step is to go back and flash GApps and the APN fix... :)

[edit] After flashing APN & GApps and rebooting, I got a "com.android.phone has stopped" message repeatedly? I seem able to hit "OK" and continue.. What is that error about?

Good deal. Don't know where you would have found a nightly from that date by the way, Carbon stopped building 4.3 on 11/17/2013. Anyway, whatever, glad you got one flashed ok. I'm sure you've already read it, but just in case, make sure you are always choosing ROM's for d2spr when looking for a custom Sprint ROM to modify for Virgin Mobile use. Removing the assert check from a ROM meant for AT&T or TMobile and then flashing will mean brick city. Also, if you eventually want to get into custom kernels to go with custom ROM's, let me know.
 
Also, after you apply the APN fix, don't worry about the "Process com.android.phone has stopped" message that will appear two times, back to back, after you do any rebooting. Just an issue with the Sprint ROM and the VM APN's getting back on track.

Oh, and trust me, if Awesomeness can be increased with a custom kernel? I'M THERE! :)
 
Well, now having climbed the Rooting/Custom ROM Learning Curve, I guess I should take a break and get ready for the How To Setup/Use Carbon Learning Curve! :-D

THANKS TO EVERYONE SO FAR FOR ALL THE INCREDIBLE HELP!! (And for letting me hijack this thread!!) I could NOT have gotten this far without y'all!

They do sell metal back plates if you like that sort of thing. I think they might interfere with nfc and wireless charging, but I'm not sure.

I think my first priority may well be a case/holster? Suggestions would be most welcome! Also, what about screen-protectors n' such? Recommendations?

You're fine, I think you just made a typo when you referred to 11/28. Just wanted to be sure we were all on the same page. :)

And yes, custom kernel ups the awesome level to eleven (ha ha, some will get that and some won't). Don't want to overload you too much, but I will throw as much at you today as you want to handle. Personally, might as well get customized to the max, but also don't want anything to get borked because of over-eagerness. At the very least, a custom kernel will help with battery life, this phone is notorious for not lasting too long on a single charge. Before I switched to my ZeroLemon 7000 mAH (yes, more than three times as much capacity as the 2100 mAH stock battery!!) I was able to tweak about 36 hours out of a single charge using a custom kernel.

I like a case that sits more flush, nothing like the Otterboxes. However, now that I have a huge battery installed, case options are not available for me, but I love the case that came with my ZeroLemon anyway. As far as holsters, I really like my Maxpedition 5 inch, it is flexible/expandable and very secure, with built-in belt loops. Never use a screen protector personally, but I am also extremely careful with my phone.

I go without both. You can get a new back for less than $5 and I've already had to replace the front glass. It was less than $10 and only took an hour or two.

Funny you should mention battery. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to that! I ran--and just installed--JuiceDefender on my old/new phone--and managed to have 70+% left at the end of a typical day...

So, be careful what you wish for--I'll definitely be interested in nifty kernels!!

[edit] Uh oh. JuiceDefender is saying it's not compatible with my ROM..."Get cyanogenmod!". Anyone have a favorite battery saver app that will run on carbon?

I like the dkp kernel. You can find it over on xda sprint forum. Make sure you get the one that corresponds to the ROM you're running.

I would actually stay away from things like Juice Defender, the explanation is kind of long though. If it works for you though, that is certainly your call to make. My friend @upconvert just posted for you about dkp kernel, that is my choice as well, there is no other kernel that comes close in my opinion.

Is there a 'medium' explanation? ;-) It delayed the arrival of texts n' such (it would only check every 15 minutes), but sure made my battery last longer!

I'll definitely check out that kernel! Pretty straight forward to flash it, etc?

[edit] I see he has three choices of download. Which one works best for our phone?

As far as kernels, in general, you want to pick a build date that closely matches the build date of the ROM you are using. Kernels update when CM updates important bug fixes, so usually the latest possible kernel build date should be the one you want. You will want, in the case of dkp kernel, to go to Stable and Testing Builds, then choose 4.3 AOSP to get a proper kernel for Carbon 4.3. Ditto for when you are ready to flash some KitKat goodness, you will need his folder for 4.4 AOSP. He also builds for TouchWiz, should you decide to try out Wicked Sensations, MOAR, or the stock/Knox-free by @jdsingle76.

You need a custom kernel, not the one that came with the ROM. Trickster also has a donate version that unlocks all features. Ditto for Andromizer, which is my app of choice.

Would the dkp kernel (mentioned earlier) qualify as a custom kernel that could be undervolted...?

Very nice. Keep in mind that dkp is already undervolted by default. That being said, on stock battery, my phone ran just fine with -75 across the board (three steps) and even -100 was stable.
