Root [Virgin Mobile] Firmware Update

I was gonna remove all the checks and recovery from the update but I was interested in what the update was intended to do. I was curious if they would try to lock bootloader or kill our root method

So if recovery can be rewritten with the original update, can we pull that for people that might want to flash back to completely stock? Then we have all the bases covered.

I used Root Explorer to unzip and rezip but you should be able to use Androzip, Winzip or any other app that handles zip files.

To sign the new zip I used an app called Zipsigner.

Did you sign it with the auto testkey?

I kno a little about this stuff now, but y'all seem like geniuses, how do u learn this stuff, do u go to school, or just learn as u go, its cool, to be able to have an issue and be like, just do this and this and it'll work, and y'all all get along too its sweet, and very professional..I applaud you, seriously y'all should give yourselves and each other a round of applause, ill be around for awhile, just to learn...

Hang around the forums and you'll learn something. I started out knowing nothing and learned from these forums. So many great people willing to help and teach.

I kno its awesome I like this kinda stuff, I like xda too but they seem to cocky loll, and not as nice as everyone here

For me it all started when I was messing with files on a windows 3.1 computer. 44mhz cpu with a few MB of ram. It was the second work computer where my mom was working late nights and she didn't want to leave me at home. I ended up breaking it so it wouldn't boot and I remember thinking it was a life and death situation. So I learned a lot about DOS and copied the proper files over to fix it and make it boot again. I think there was a windows 3.1 book in the office, so that was my research since there was no internet and awesome forums like this one.

By the end of the experience I made the computer faster than it was before by removing a lot of uneeded temp files and improving the bootup sequence. I was hooked at that point! I started to play around with Q-basic a bit in those days too because I liked the games!

Research and exploration is the best way to learn! It may seem daunting to learn computer systems at this point because of how far they have come, but we also have the resources through the internet to not only find the answers but also to ask for guidance!

So dig in and learn if you like this stuff! Most of what you will do is troubleshooting, and thats like doing science... you just make a theory and test it... do it over and over till you find the answer. The more you do it, the better you get at making theories! :)

Yea I feel like even if I mess something up, I can still fix it because of all the information

I deleted the update file but I cant get it to stop prompting me for this stupid update. Any one know how?

I'm not quite ready to blame it yet but after I flashed the baseband I lost all voice services, including sms. Is it possible to flash the old one back to see if it helps.

Dude thats an old computer, I remember those too hahah, great story, being young and figuring out how to fix it is talent, and that stuff wasn't to easy since computers weren't as technical as today

Since were kinda talking about computers, is there a way or reason it would get so hot, mostly when I play games, I kno it may get a little hot, but it actually shuts dwn sometimes, and I dnt play crazy games halo 1, and skyrim....I have a 2009 hp g62, google the stats, if u wana see, and possibly help, thanks

A computer that shuts down on games is either heat, so blow out the dust, if that doesn't work and its not super hot in your computer room, think about power. What's your power supply like? How old, how many watts? You might even check your drivers... If it was indeed heat, is possible things got damaged, but graphics cards will usual clock down under high temps!

Power supply is in a surge protector, I could check my drivers again, it got super hot and hibernated until it cooled down, but its from 09' so mayb tht has something to do with it, I mite have to get a new surge protector

I unzipped the original update, edited the updater script (removed the ro secure line) and replaced the install-recovery.sh with the one from victorious. Havent tried flashing it yet. Been out all day (just moved from Detroit to New Orleans, lots to see). Maybe later. I didnt remove any of the check lines from it so I would have to go back to my pre-victorious backup first. Thats on my computer at home.

Thats exactlu what happened. In the 60's it was one of the richest cities in the world. What does that tell you?

LOL, my first PC ran MSDos and didn't have a mouse. I had the same problem and the thing wouldn't boot. My older brother told me I would never fix it. That was the wrong thing to say to me. Took me about an hour. The PC had similar spec as the one you describe, 8Mb of RAM and a 40Mb hard drive.

Everything I know is self taught with a lot of trial and error. I know HTML, css and some PHP and built probably 100-120 PC's for friends and family. Wish I had the energy to learn how to build ROM's, but not a huge fan of Linux.

You wanna hear old, when I was like 11 my first pc was a hand me down Commodore 64. Yeah. (Geez I feel old now). Lol. Glamorous life of a poor kid growing up in Detroit.

I haven't been following this thread too closely because I had not received the update. Not until this morning that is:

I tried reading through this entire thread, but still don't have a clear idea of how to deal with this, so I have a few questions.

1) First and foremost, should I allow the update? It will not try to install automatically and mess things up, will it?

2) If I should allow the install, what is the exact procedure? Do I have to go all the way back to stock first? Then reflash a backup of my current Victorious setup afterwards? Or is there a different procedure?

3) Where did this update download to on my phone? I haven't found it yet.

4) If I should not install it, is it something that is going to be added in part or whole to a future Victorious update?

5) If I shouldn't install it, is there any way to keep the notification from bugging me every time I open the phone?

Thanks for any clarification,
Rick

Just hold off for now. There's nothing in the update to get excited over. Plus it's a big pain to install if your not completely stock.

A few people are planning on releasing a edited version so you don't have to return to stock and don't Bork your phone.

Might take a bit but be patient
