Root [Virgin Mobile] Firmware Update

Ok, will do. Thanks!

However, is there any way to keep it from nagging me?

I deleted it and it still keeps nagging me. Lol. Its located in cache/ and its a long string of numbers with mc1 to mg5 update.zip at the end. I dont know where the file for the notification that keeps popping up is though. Can't find it.

I haven't been following this thread too closely because I had not received the update. Not until this morning that is:

I tried reading through this entire thread, but still don't have a clear idea of how to deal with this, so I have a few questions.

1) First and foremost, should I allow the update? It will not try to install automatically and mess things up, will it?

2) If I should allow the install, what is the exact procedure? Do I have to go all the way back to stock first? Then reflash a backup of my current Victorious setup afterwards? Or is there a different procedure?

3) Where did this update download to on my phone? I haven't found it yet.

4) If I should not install it, is it something that is going to be added in part or whole to a future Victorious update?

5) If I shouldn't install it, is there any way to keep the notification from bugging me every time I open the phone?

Thanks for any clarification,
Rick

How did u get the update, are u rooted or anything, I haven't got any update yet

Yeah, I'm rooted and running Victorious but I don't think that has anything to do with it. They are just sending it out incrementally to people so everyone doesn't download it all at once. Others got the notice before I did.

It just shows up. You'll get it soon. Not everyone gets it at the same time so theres not a million downloads at once. It will show up even if you're rooted.

I have victorious too, buy was shouldn't u download it, how bad can it mess ur phone up

I don't know. The answer to that is beyond my depth of knowledge. I saw some concerns in earlier posts about it locking the bootloader, but I really don't know. I'm willing to take kwknott's advice in post #74 and just wait.

If you're on Victorious it won't install. It has checks in updater-script to verify the system. If your not stock it will error out. Even if you revert to stock rom, it still won't install due to custom recovery.

I installed it but required reverting to stock, installing CWM recovery and editing the updater-script. It doesn't lock bootloader or kill root.

LMAO, this has been a known update for about a week or so, and I just got my notification. Just for the heck of it I clicked install and the phone restarted into TWRP. I then restarted the system and that was that. Just thought I would share :-)

zach, to point out. Shutdowns while playing games: A few things to check:
1. Update graphics drivers/chipset drivers (windows 7 is more likely just to restart the ui instead of restart, but sometimes invalid calls bluescreen the chip and cause restarts). Verify that its the right drivers as well, some graphics cards work vastly different
2. remove any graphics drivers for cards you no longer have. these can also interfere in weird unexplainable ways
3. I'm assuming monitor is working, cabling is intact, etc...
4. Heat is also an issue, clean dust from machine, graphics card, etc as much as possible, air duster is your friend, don't spray components with ice please
5. Power is the next issue, size of power supply is vital, and I recommend nothing less than a 750 Bronze 80+... some games suck more power out of the graphics card (due to stressing the card) than others and the rails on some power supplies can't handle the spike
6. I saw you had it attached to a surge protector, those are nice, battery backups are better as most power your machine from the battery and charge the battery from the wall, it supplies more consistent power and extends the life of the power supply and other components exponentially.
7. Disable other apps, and disconnect from the web. Run a virus scan, this can also be a culprit
8. Ensure that your windows is up to date, and that there are no new updates that apply to graphics, chipset, directX, .net, or other related devices...
9. Replace graphics card cooler or graphics card, recommend replace power supply at same time.

Just a thought transition. :)

It installed the update?

To #3. Its in /cache/ and it a file with a bunch of numbers and ends with mc1 to mg5 .update.

Seems to have worked for me, at least so far. I did save a copy though, if you want it. I also saved a copy to Box and I assume I can get a public download link for it, just like with Dropbox or Drive. I may not leave it there long term though, so a link could be broken in the future.

At first I wasn't really concerned about doing anything with this file, but if it is just sitting on my phone tying up 75 MB for no reason, then maybe it is worth finding and deleting after all? I did not delete it, but it is not in /cache either. As you can see on my screenshot from earlier today, it does say "downloaded and verified". Is there somewhere else it could be?

It should be in cache. Its a bunch of numbers and letters followed by update.zip. I deleted it but these are the other files in cache.

Nope, not there. But duh, I think I just realized why. Though I said I did not delete this, I did clear my app cache earlier today. I'm guessing this is the same cache that apps use and when I cleared it, this update was also deleted. Would I be correct about that?
