Root [Virgin Mobile] I got a system update today.

Okay, another dilemma. How do I boot recovery. I held down Vol Up, Home, Power and it said "Recovery booting..." then "Samsung Galaxy S III", I let go, and it booted normally?

EDIT: Nevermind, Let go of the buttons too late.

EDIT: EDIT: Anyone know what the changes in MG2 are?
 
Hey, everyone. Please bear with me, I've got a question that I need answered in very simple terms. haha

So I JUST got my s3, like 5 days ago. I rooted it first thing, as per the instructions on this forum. So I think I have that clockwork recovery mod thing. The reason I rooted it was so I could use Wifi Tether for Root Users. I live in a rural area, and the only internet I can get is 3G. My old LG Optimus V broke, so I had to run out and get this one.

This morning I saw there was a notification that a system update had been downloaded and was ready to be installed. Now I'm worried because I don't know what to do. I know installing updates was tricky business with my rooted Kindle Fire, so I'm wondering what I have to do now.

How do I install the update? I'm worried about bricking my device if I just tell the device to install it. I need a way to update without worrying about my new phone! :)

My concerns are,
1.) I don't want to brick my s3
2.) I don't want to have to wipe the phone (I've spent the last 5 days installing every app under the sun on here and getting it just the way I like it)
3.) I need to still be able to be rooted and use wifi tether after the update

Can anyone confirm that wifi tether still works after update? And can anyone explain to me (in reeeeally simple terms) how to update? Thanks! :D
 
Is this an 89MB update? I have a notification for such an update and I assume it's the one people are talking about in this thread.

I also have no idea what Kies is or how it's used. Is it the Samsung equivalent to HTC's RUU? Or to reprhase, does Kies have the option to perform RUU like operations, along with other stuff?
 
Yes even stock recovery the android drops dead half
way thourgh install. I have everything stock
even have flash counter back to 0 :(

Has anyone else that has updated retained their apps, data, and system settings?
 
I'm in a similar boat as you (rooted with clockword mod recovery) and received the same system update message (although I haven't yet updated). Since you have a custom recovery, I wouldn't take the update that you were displayed...I would imagine that with the custom recovery the OTA update would screw up. Another thread was started regarding this:

When you go to that post, you'll fall into the "Odexed" category.
 
I updated my stock rooted s3 from one of the posts yesterday. Skippy has the one I think. Dont worry about bricking your phone.... well...there's always the chance, but it shouldnt be a problem.

Edit: you only need to wipe dalvik cache or whatever its called. Nothing else. The instructions on the post are very simple.
 
Yeah I tried just using the update prompt that showed up on my phone, but it booted into recovery and then said it couldn't install the update. Although, now, the prompt to install the update has gone away.

Everything is fine after the update if you used the files posted earlier in the thread and are rooted. I think all you have to wipe is dalvik cache. I don't know ehat that is but nothing noticeable was delted.

Its better to wait and see what the community has to say when there's a new update. I only know how to root and install the roms, nothing else, so I count on these forums and the xda ones to tell me what's safe or not. :) I think I read that the update prompted on your phone won't install because of the custom recovery, so just use the link skippy gave you and you'll be fine.

So wait are we going to lose our apps and data if we do this? Also I don't have CWM I have TWRP with SuperSu so what will happen with those?
 
HELP! I installed the update as per the instructions in this thread, but it never prompted me to fix recovery or root!! Now my device is not rooted :( and I need root access to use my wifi tether app, it's the only way I have internet at home. Please help!

Edit: Fixed. Check the other thread for info, but basically just re-root with root-from-recovery through clockworkmod (starting at the step where you boot into recovery near the end in the thread on this forum for rooting)

5. Reboot to System... & It may prompt you in recovery
6. "yes" to Fix install stock recovery on boot
7. "yes" to fix root access (if rooted)

Im not sure What odexed means. I am running cwm recovery and stock rooted rom. Is this the method for me to get update? What will I loose as far as apps and settings?

You can look it up for yourself if you want to know what it means, but you are odexed by default, so yes that is the method you want. You shouldn't lose anything as far as apps and settings, you'll just be wiping your caches.

Sorry man I'm just so noob at this stuff and can't afford to screw it up. Lol! I do appreciate late the answer very much.

I used this method. It worked flawlessly.
