So much of this hahaha.

Anyways, i tried the update last night. As it was installing my phone said it could not match some signatures and that it was aborting the update. Now, however, my phone is no longer telling me that there is an update available so maybe the update actually DID install? In any case i haven't noticed anything different about my phone since trying it, and I still have root access, so nothing seems to be broken... any more info would be appreciated.
 
I am new to Virgin Mobile, but have been using Android for a few years. Used Odin to root my Epic with no (major) problems, then rooted by Photon Q with a one click program. I got my GS3 a couple days ago, and decide to jump right in and root using this method. I got almost all the way through, but when I got to the end and tried to install zip from SD card, I got an error message that it could not access the E: drive. I tried to tell CW to mount the SD card and got an error saying it failed to mount. I poked around the internet and saw some people complaining that anyone who installed the Samsung update from a few days ago lost the ability to install from SD. Maybe a new security patch by Samsung? I went through and tried everything again and see that the phone keeps rolling back to stock recovery when this fails.

Anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround yet?

so, tonight i just tried to root my wife's GS3 (she bought it on saturday). it did not work. i got the same 'cannot mount' issue and tried pushing the 'recovery.tar.md5' file via Odin, but it failed.

i stopped right there. i powered the phone back up and it is still operational.

has anyone encountered this specific issue? if yes, i'm curious what you did (that is different than what i did) that allowed you to root your GS3.

I'm assuming that recovery file is the one posted by xthedakmanx? If it is, don't know what to say other than try it again. It worked for me the first time. Hopefully someone else can help.
 
Hello everyone, I found this post yesterday and it was extremely useful.

I have been with virgin mobile for years and this was my first time trying to root one of there phones.

First, I would like to thank Austrie for the amazing post/instructions/links.

I also had the mounting issue that was fixed by the recovery.tar.md5 from xthedakmanx.

I do have one issue now and that is how to enable the wifi tethering now.

I have Titanium Backup and it says I have root access.

I have tried:
ISWAT Tehter Unlocker Free
1-Click WiFi Tether No Root
Barnacle Wifi Tehter

I would really like to have a wireless tether rather then usb.

I don't know what specifics you need but here is some info about my phone and what I used to root it.

Team Epic Root from Recovery v5
Samsung SPH-L710
Virgin Mobile
Android 4.1.2

Can I just use ADB to root?

I would need the CWM or TWRP and an su zip, then just push them to the phone and then I can't remember what I would do. God this phone is better, stock w/o root, than 20 Triumphs rooted with Minimal Triumph.
 
Just a heads up -

Mine was stuck on "Reset" and I thought I bricked it. It took 2:10 to come up with a "Pass".

Let it sit for a little if you see "Reset".

Will this method work after using the recent update to MG2?

My device was mg2 when I got it, and I used the ODIN recovery from xda (I linked in my previous post, above) and su for flashing from the Superuser app on the store (koushs'). My device status is modified now so I believe it will increase the flash count.
 
I am having issues installing the .zip as well as others. I have used the recovery.tar to no avail. I get the error message E: signature verification failed and then it reboots w/o root access. Has anyone else ran into this?

NVM, I got it...Was using an older version of Odin :D
 
I have tried using this method a dozen times... and every single time I get "-failure" when it goes to root the phone. I don't understand why and it's really getting irritating.

Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this? I've even taken the S3 back to the state it was out of the box, updated Android OS, and then tried this root method but it still fails every time.

I'm on Mac OS X and have tried on both 10.7 and 10.8 with the same results...

help... please.... :(
 
I keep on and on going through all the various steps.. and I get into CWM Recovery.. only for it to say can't mount or can't open cache recovery command, or cache recovery log, can't mount emmc. Etc. It's acting like it can't mount either the internal or external sd. Help please!!

Just recently get your phone? Moped_Ryder says the recovery linked in this thread is the same as the one I used from xda. I got my phone just about 2 weeks ago and used an ODIN recovery from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616 so try that one. I used the CWM version.
 
Finally I decided to root my s3, but "2 problems happened.

!. unmounted SD card: I can't root the phone because I can't choose the file required to root it.

2. every time I try to access to CWM recovery it goes to the stock recovery. I have to go back to odin and installing it again. I have done this 3 time and it seems but the SD card is not there.

I try it with two SD cars (4GB and 16GB) but it did not work. They are fully functional and I formatted them but for some reason and only in CWM recovery didn't recognize them. My s3 is running the build number L710VPAMG2.

Do you know guys what seems to be the problem? Do I have other alternatives?

If any one could or would be willing I can offer any help. I not the best but Im not terrible. I would love to see the gs3 overclocked to 1.7ghz.
