Virgin Mobile price changes

you could always look into the option of buying a lesser phone now to get the plan then returning that phone and getting the triumph

Current VM customers will be grandfathered at current prices for the life of the account. If you have a beyond talk plan before July 20th you will pay 25.00, 40.00, or 60.00 for aas long as your a customer. Of course people on the unlimited plan for 60.00 will want to go down to the new unlimited everything price of 55.00. I am curious as to if I have the 25.00 plan now and let's say on July 25th or whatever I want to change plans to the 40.00 plan will I have to pay 45.00? Or can I always stay at current pricing no matter what plan I want since I am a customer now prior to July 20th?

I'd really like to know this too.

The Jax used to be $7, I don't think they have it any more. But I know a friend just got a VM phone for $14. I'm not sure of the model, but it was an LG. Even $20 would be worth it to lock you in at the current prices.

The model I think you are talking about is the LG 101. I know radioshack has them here in Northern Ohio for 14.99. The article which is linked a few posts ago does say that you can upgrade phones and stay at current pricing as long as your a customer before July 20th. But one part of the article makes it sound like that you can't change plans. So maybe what plan you are enrolled in before July 20th is the one you have to keep for the current price. So if you change plans after July 20th you will pay more like if you go from the 25.00 to the 40.00 after July 20th you will have to pay the new 45.00?

If the data hogs continue, there will be throttling just like with the broadband2go devices....
*************I stand corrected**********, Its happening as well. Knew it was a matter of time.

Define "data hog".

I use over 5 GB a month and I do not tether. Am I a "data hog"? I'll give you a hint: No.

I pay for unlimited data, and I'm using what I pay for. It is impossible for me to be a data hog on an unlimited data plan when I abide by the terms of service. They promised unlimited data and now they are reneging on that promise. What they are doing is bait-and-switch. I knew it was a bait-and-switch before I even signed up, but that doesn't make what they are doing right. They are doing exactly what I thought they would, and in less than a year.

BTW, since most of my data usage is low-bit-rate streaming, I will still use over 5 GB a month after they put in their unethical caps. So it won't affect me at all.

I would not call anyone really a data hog who uses the apps within the phone,it's the A hols who replace their Home internet provider with tethering or hot spotting,as for what they did is not an illegal business practice, they are allowing current users to stay at the same price, and remember their is no contract holding you here, and for what you pay it is still a good deal.

Virgin Mobile's also changing the definition of "unlimited" for these plans, throttling users back to around 256 kbps if they consume more than 2.5GB a month.
Is this a month by the Calender, or is it calculated from your monthly bill date due? For eg if my monthly date due is on July 23rd, is it calculated from July23-Aug23? Or is it calculated from Aug1-Aug31?

i am looking to switch to VM and purchase the motorola triumph when it comes out. i'm looking to switch over before the 20th if i want to stay with the 25 dollar rates, but the phone comes out on the 19th. i know that i would have to receive the phone before i activate a plan but it'll be pretty much impossible to do so due to shipping and stuff. what should i do? i tried browsing around the site looking for cheaper phones but the site isn't even working.

You don't actually have to have a phone to have an account. Call up V-Mobile and have them set up an account for you, and then you can wait until you get the Triumph to activate it. That's what I'm doing. I called V-Mobile yesterday.

(1) They promise(d) "unlimited" data, and for the most part still do....
"Unlimited" by Virgin Mobile Terms of Service means "unlimited use BUT not unlimited downloadable content".......Which means you can use it ALL YOU WANT (which IS unlimited), but your "downloadable" content is going to be limited in the new terms. If you go over your 2.5gb/5GB (which ever it may be when implemented), means, you can still use the data service, BUT your "download" speeds will be "throttled" (eg. 256kps)....
So, in essence, you still have access to data, but at a highly restricted download rate. BUT, its STILL unlimited.
So, even if this happens, you still have UNLIMITED, but at 256kbps.
I guarantee, you won't be doing any streaming without alot of buffering, or downloading at a painfully slow rate. BUT HEY, its still unlimited.
How do you think T-Mobile still advertises "unlimited" on their modified plans?

(2) You claim its bait and switch.....Possibly. The same scenerio that's happening with the Optimus happened previously with the BroadBand2GO device. It lasted about 6 months, then the terms changed.
HOWEVER, you said you KNEW it was going to end up this way, let you STILL signed up (so I see you have no reason to complain). MONTH TO MONTH means that......month to month, you're not in a contract, and Virgin Mobile/Sprint is not obligated to offer you the same terms month to month.....If you don't like the new changes, there's no contract making you stay.

(3) Typically "data hogs" are those who use a mobile device (cell phone) to continually stream video (such as netflix), or those who tether the phone to some other device in order to download large volumes of data.
Hotspot on a prepaid phone was hidden probably because of this reason. But since its been exploited, there's heavier burden on towers, which lowers the quality of service for everyone using that same tower.
Sharing data on this phone was never meant to be. Sprint charges 29.99 a month to use the hotspot on the "S". what I can never understand is why people stream NETFLIX on their phone when they got a pc. But then again, what you download/stream on your phone is your business.

FINALLY, if ya don't like the new changes, look for another carrier, or stop whining about "caps".

Personally I am used to data caps by now. Heck T-Mobile Prepaid would throttle if you went over 30 MB on Data Daypasses. I can't wait to see how much bandwidth I use on my phone after Virgin Mobile releases the meter online.

On my Thrive (The AT&T version of the Optimus V), I barely used 217MB in one month. I used it for checking email on 3 accounts, updating the weather every hour, and occassional web browsing, facebook, and about 6 turn by turn directions sessions using GPS. I DID NOT stream any video because I have a pc for that.... When i'm at home, the phone's on wi-fi/

So with moderate use, I dont see how one would even gobble up 5GB on a mobile phone. (unless you're just continually streaming and hooked on youtube videos).

I am on the $25/month plan. Just want to see if after July 20, if I want to switch to the current $40/month plan (and vise versa) at anytime, could I keep my old rates?

Just got off the phone with VMO because I wanted to change my plan to the 25$ 300 minute beyond talk plan. The guy said good thing I did it today because tomorrow the plan is going up to 35$ for new customers. Customers who have the current rates can keep them but if you want to change plans you'll be stuck with the higher rate. He also said the 40$ plan is going to 45 and I think I heard through his accent that the 60 is going to 65 but he might have said 55. I suspect we'll see for sure how this all pans out tomorrow.

Just a Heads-up.

OLD NEWS! Did you read ANY other posts in the forum before posting this one?

Thought it might be too good to be true, so I called again and a second rep contradicted the first. You're only grandfathered in to the rate of whatever plan you have as of 7/19/11.

If existing customers change plans on or after the 20th, they will pay the new plan rates.

(sorry if I got anyone's hopes up, there)

A VM rep just told me that current rates are grandfathered in for existing customers even if they change plans after the 20th, so yes: if you want to change to the 1200 minute plan after July 20, you would pay $40, not $45.

I had thought you'd only be grandfathered in for your existing plan as of 7/19, but that's not what I was told today.

Can anyone else confirm this?

i'd suggest calling back and recording the conversation because that's very different from what i've been told and how other carriers handle grandfathered plans

The major drawback with Virgin Mobile is its network, or lack thereof beyond mostly major metro areas and the major corridors in between. I don't currently travel a whole lot away from the NYC/DC metro corridor, but that is because of limited finances and is hopefully subject to change in the future.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I live in a pretty rural part of Ohio and travel around a lot to areas both more rural than this and to cities. My coverage is just fine everywhere.

Very old news and the unlimited plan is going down to 55. And you get grandfathered in so no big deal. Plans change on the 20th.

I live in Northwest Ohio and I just traveled to Tennessee and I had good coverage everywhere I went, except for when I was way up in the mountains around Jellico where I am originally from. ( No one gets service from any provider up there ) That includes big cities and small rural towns. So I am very pleased with VM ( Sprint ) service. I think I read that the 2.5 GB cap before throttling takes effect, begins in October.
