Root [Virgin Mobile] Rooting?

Prinny

Resident Linux Nutcase
Hey folks. I'm seeing some mixed reviews here if it will or will not root etc.

To make a short story long, Victory LTE, JB 4.1, Virgin Mobile.

Which rooting method (if any) will work?

Links always appreciated.

Either recovery I have ported will work and an Odin .tar is available for CWM and TWRP. Since the recovery is independent of the booting kernel, even the ICS kernel would work, but I build these kernels from JB source, so they are up to spec with the device. They will work with the VMU or SPR codenames. Once the user has the recovery installed through ODIN, there are flashable zips in my catalog for SU and Busybox. The link to my host is all over, but I feel it would be rude to not provide it here:

Interloper,

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to check it out, and more than likely root this bad boy. Just a few bloat items I need to remove, especially.

I have ordered this phone. Looks easy enough. Flash CWM with Odin and then use CWM to flash Superuser and Busybox.

Let me know how it goes, Prinny :)

No worries, I will.

Honestly I'm enjoying this phone. I had the Evo V...but slammed it in my car door...so that wasn't pretty.

I just want to root to remove a few things here and there. I'll get around to it later this week. Probably...Wednesday after work?

My assumption is no.

If I'm not mistaken, SuperSu/Superuser requires busybox to run properly.

I'll try it later and let you know. Right now I;m busy working on cm-10...just got to the boot errors for video!

So, here's a question. Before I take the plunge and attempt all this. Does Odin work with windows 8?

I've never used it before, So I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing here.

Edit: So it does. Neat. Just flashed TWRP. That was simple. I think that's the EASIEST recovery flash I've ever done.

Edit 2: Spoke too soon. Booted into recovery. TWRP wasn't there, but the regular stock was. Hrm...ODIN said success, too.

You have to uncheck autoreboot.. then when flash is successful, unplug phone battery pull and reboot into recovery.
The phone reverts to stock recovery img but doing this will allow you to get into the custom recovery to flash Superuser etc before it reverts to stock recovery on next boot

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't even have the phone yet that's just what I understand?

Ah, okay. Well, that (somewhat) makes sense.

I'll have to do that in a bit. Since I know it'll work without issues now, it will be a quick easy process.

I assume this phone is exactly like the S2 in terms of the recovery and kernel being intertwined and not independent of each other.

Meaning if you have Agats repack kernel with recovery (for example) and you then flash a Kuban kernel you will lose the Agats recovery and it will be replaced with Kuban recovery.

That is the reason the custom recovery is not sticking because we need a JB repack kernel that includes a custom recovery and it will then stick. Basically the stock recovery image is embedded into the stock JB kernel so it will keep reverting to it.

I think..

Honestly, that I don't know. Even though I worked for Samsung, I never owned a Samsung phone. But from what I understand, that would make sense.

I wonder if Flash Image GUI will work to flash kernels...I'm so new to Samsung phones its crazy. Give me a Samsung TV, and pfft...I'll show you things you didn't know your TV could do.

Basically we just need a repack kernel for a recovery to stick. Garwyn over at SXTP developers is apparently working on one.
Which means there will soon be a OneClick Odin repack kernel and probably a OneClick rooted stock rom.

Unless someone here that's good with kernels can make us a stock repack kernel with recovery beforehand ;)
I know nothing about making or modifying kernels

Yeah, kernels and zImages and whatnot are a bit out of my league. A few edits to xmls and whatnot I can do, but that's VERY basic edits ;)

Well, the phones relatively new. So soon, we'll get it all sorted out.

Yeah I'm content with stock. I just need root for Titanium Backup restore of valuable app data. We have that so I'm good to go. The rest to come is just perks.
I wish my phone would get here already LOL! I'm particularly excited about NFC and Google Wallet.

Oh, yeah! I still have that on my DropBox actually. Ha!

I need to delete some bloatware, but I want to make a nandroid first. Just in case.

Although I'm probably only going to remove the wallet, and a few Google things and the Virgin Mobile crap.

Yep.
Thanks to sxtpdevelopers, there is an OneClick rooted stock LH1 (ICS).
Rooted stock ROM.

I hope they'll make a Jellybean LJ1/LJ9 or LK5 based Oneclick.
