Root [Virgin Mobile] Why I'm not developing anymore

JerryScript

Android Expert
In case you haven't heard about it:
CyanogenMod goes from hobby Android to business Android | ZDNet

Being an Android dev who has NEVER accepted donations (ask any dev team I've worked with, when offered a share of donations, I have ALWAYS said no thank you), I find this repugnant. I have done what little I could to help the Android community, as my own personal way of returning the favor so many others have given me with their work. In the process, I have been loved, hated, threatened with lawsuits, and spent countless nights with very little sleep attempting to help people with their phones. I have put my personal life and professional life at risk numerous times due to spending too much of my personal time on Android projects.

This is the line that should not have been crossed IMHO. Thank you to those of you who supported my efforts by testing and offering your help, it has truly been appreciated. And thank you to those few on the CM team who have helped me in the past, I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Wow, but, but, you were... no you ARE "Mr. Victory" on the vm side. Maybe on the sprint side too, I don't know much about what goes on over there.
#missing you already
This must be what it feels like when a girl breaks up with you via facebook. (Sniff sniff)

I will certainly miss you and your work Jerry but I certainly understand your reasons. I know how valuable time with family is and how little time there seems to be after work.

I'm interested to see how this CM thing will work.

Thanks for all the time and hard work you have spent dev'ing and helping others Android users out.

Jerry,

I have never had any of the phones (my victory is on order) that you have developed for, but I know for sure that when my victory gets here I WILL be using your software.

You will be missed.

Bob

Your development will be missed.

I don't see what's wrong with taking a hobby professional, but each to his own.

Even though i am new, im not really because i would visit this forun alot as a visitor and I have seen jerryscripts work. I have found jerryscript very resourcefull and awesome and I wish he didn't have to go. I will dedicate alot of time learning this sort of stuff because of him.

I read his post about what was in the link but I'm confused. Does this mean more dev teams for more devices? As in now we'll have more support and they'll be able to work on more phones but now we may have to pay a small fee as the teams will be paid?? What does this mean? Can someone explain in full webcast is happening and why it has seemingy killed one of my favorites devs developing spirit?

I believe it means that official (and possible unofficial) CyanogenMod developing will heavily increase. I also believe that their ROMs will remain free, but I believe the CyanogenMod installer will be paid in the Play Store

I totally understand Jerry. Thank you for your hard work.

I don't see what's wrong with taking a hobby professional, but each to his own.

I can see a few things that would make it tough on a hobby dev. For one CM could possibly require all devs to have a certain level of knowledge or certifications to develop an "Official" ROM. CM may even outlaw hobby development. They now have 7 million reasons to do this.

While I think CM is a good ROM, I have never had a device (Motorola Triump and Samsung Victory) that ran it and had everything work. This is why I was happy to see it's development, but would not even consider flashing it until EVERYTHING worked. With CM becoming an "Official" ROM, maybe these tight lipped phone manufacturers will be more willing to share their source files and they can develop ROM's quicker and have everything work. JMHO

Godspeed Jerry!

It's possible, but I wouldn't say that it is probable. They'd stand to lose more by doing something like that than to gain.

Exactly. Cm is open source. And I believe they use and licensed some stuff under gpl. The worst they can sanely do is prevent people from using their trademarked cyanogenmod name. Mozilla does the same with Firefox, which is why debian has it branded as iceweasel and gnu distributes it as icecat. Users would just have to get used to an additional name.

The absolute worst that could happen would be them closing as much source as they can. This is incredibly unlikely and goes against everything they've said. It would result in alienating everyone who isn't in the core team, likely forcing other maintainers and developers to just fork and forget about upstream. Hopefully resulting in something similar to the above scenario but without the core team.

was wonderin where youve been at, hope things have been good and wish u the best in the future. CM going pro is nothing. we still have plenty to hoppy and play with :)

I also hate to see it go pro because its all about free source and helping each other. Once boost can buy cm for their devices they will start the we want this feature disabled or that feature on a pay as you go service. So all that everyone has worked so hard for to share the knowledge will now be at the hands of those that control everything they touch with their money. Gonna miss ya jerry.

I really don't foresee CM bowing to that kind of pressure when they don't need Boost to exist, they can exist without it. Typically that happens because one company can't exist without another and so the other takes advantage of it.

CyanogenMod has grown unusually quickly in the past several months, polishing its custom Android firmware and introducing new services. We now know why the team has been so busy -- it's quietly been operating as a full-fledged company since April. The newly announced Cyanogen Inc., led by Boost Mobile co-founder Kirt McMaster, is devoted solely to building CyanogenMod as a platform. Some of the project's veteran developers are now full-time staff, including Steve Kondik (CTO) and Koushik Dutta (VP of Engineering). Read on to learn what the company has in store, including its hopes of eventually competing on the same level as heavy-hitters like Apple and Google.

the rest of the story Cyanogen is now a company, aims to be third major mobile ecosystem

CM goes "corporate"...well all I can say is congratulations to Steve and his team. They've done so much for the community and with this funding they've received and the restructuring of the core team I'm sure they'll continue to do great things.

This could be huge for the development community as a whole. Quicker access to source code, fastboot unlocks on devices out of the box, longer shelf life for "aging" devices and with it becoming a "job" the team has more time and resources to focus and improve the CM rom and their source.

I'm also sure we'll hear words like "sell out" etc. But the facts are they've given and given and put so much of their personal time and energy into CM.

That being said anyone who begrudged them for releasing a paid app or whatever they wanted to do to generate money is a selfish and unappreciative person.

I wish them every success in whatever commercial endeavor they go on and if I can support them I will. Congratulations Cyanogen! Well earned and definitely deserved.

Besides who doesn't want their passion in life for a career? :D

Agreed and lets keep in mind a universal truth...at their core these guys are hackers and code monkeys...I absolutely can see a paid "installer" or the like in the future and I'm fine with that. But even if a service provider restricted certain functionality I'm sure the source will be available and we can still BYOR.

not trying to bash you JerryScript, but you're gonna quit over "CM" going in that direction. We still have AOSP and I think if that stays the way it is, android wont be on a "Highway to Hell" so to speak.

He did say, however, that some new CyanogenMod apps are in development, and some CM apps may become proprietary

And why shouldn't they be? If they are coded and built from the ground up they've nothing to do with AOSP. Thousands of developers have proprietary apps, from things on play store to OEM apps included with skins like Sense, TW etc. I think people are getting their panties in a bunch because these guys may not be slaving away to provide a 100% free product anymore. I mean this gravy train has been rolling since JF back in what 08? Cyanogen started in 09...I think all will be well and there will be a balance. I find Ben Affleck being cast as Batman far more disturbing. ;)
