Root [Virgin Mobile] Why I'm not developing anymore

And why shouldn't they be? If they are coded and built from the ground up they've nothing to do with AOSP. Thousands of developers have proprietary apps, from things on play store to OEM apps included with skins like Sense, TW etc. I think people are getting their panties in a bunch because these guys may not be slaving away to provide a 100% free product anymore. I mean this gravy train has been rolling since JF back in what 08? Cyanogen started in 09...I think all will be well and there will be a balance. I find Ben Affleck being cast as Batman far more disturbing. ;)

I completely agree with you. I was just informing the uniformed :)

Regardless of what any of us think, the sad fact is we are losing one of our main Devs. I understand G60 and Chairshot are still working on things, but Jerry and a few others have given this phone a dose of steroids.

Agree or disagree, Jerry's gotta do what he's gotta do.

I'm a little disturbed by the Ben Affleck batman thing too. But I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for our little phone.

Im reading my a$$ off lately trying to learn as much as I can. I want to build a rom someday. hopefully soon (probably not). but I have a lot to learn.

It's definitely a good deal to pick up on. I've been wanting to start developing but there's not enough hours in my day.

I made a good attempt at it about a year ago and made pretty decent progress but the pc I was building on died from a lightning storm and then my 3rd daughter was born and time went out Window

This is my 2nd phone. On my first one development died right when I got it. One rom and kernal though. the fact that Jerryscript was in the middle of developing when I got this one made it very fun. also definitely inspired me to want to learn more. Thank you Jerry. (Thread is starting to sound a little like a eulogy). :(

as many people have said, and as all of us know, JerryScript YOU ARE AWESOME. the hard work on better software, and the sheer helpfulness.

the latest CM development, I'm just not sure yet how to take it. I feel like it is partly about how 4.3 (or was it 4.4?) is supposed to be close-to-universal for nearly-all + even-older devices? (obviously that can't be entirely true - the problem all along with android devices, has been binary blobs for module drivers and even for some higher level software. so you get some/most/all of the latest UI and mid-to-high level software, but still may get stuck with outdated kernel BECAUSE DRIVERS, and that old kernel likely won't support the newest APIs etc. etc.)

but yeah it will be quite interesting to see how the issue of CM source code plays out.

So, because you disagree with the choices another developer or development team has made to turn away from their users, you make a public complaint and openly turn your back on yours? That fails logic. It won't compile.

But, on a human level...wait, I'm not a human, I'm a cyborg.
Enjoy yourself doing whatever it is you do. And tell, the lady with the tepid steak to suck it!

I just read the focal developers post on the "drama". I now completely understand what Jerry is thinking and completely agree with every point he makes.

Considering buying a Firefox os phone now. Or forking cm.

They've not said anything about "turning away from their users..." they've been given an opportunity to take their hobby/passion and make it their day job. How could anyone begrudge that?
I think people are jumping the gun and making a lot of assumptions at this point. Especially people with that false sense of entitlement, as though they were owed support from a developer. I mean almost 5 years of free awesomeness is a pretty good run. We should be congratulating them, further encouraging them and if they published a paid app support them.
Besides commercial exposure could do a lot of positive things. Pressure manufacturers to ship with unlocked or unlockable bootloaders, end users having options after their devices have reached EOL for a carrier etc.
Personally I think there are exciting times ahead. With the exception of the previously mentioned casting of Affleck as the Dark Knight.

I know they've not said anything. I am pretty sure I understand, but I didn't write the first sentence very well. So, if you amend that with a few more well chosen words to imply the true but hidden meaning then something more precise will be said. But, I should have just kept my business my business; which is busting cm-10.2 for this device. Apologies to all.

You owe me no apologies.

nor me.I thought cm wouldve done this a while ago. If i was Steve I wouldve signed a deal a LOOOOOOONG time ago. but eh. AOSP will forever be "open" in a sense. Hopefully paranoid team wont have to give up their awesome rom because of this but its not like cm wont stay mostly open source.

It looks like the main cm base will remain open source but I'm sure their proprietary apps and such won't. Looks like they may get into providing customized roms to oem's that will be proprietary.

They have to find some revenue somewhere.

We currently try hard to get cm on our devices but one day we may be buying devices with a carrier bloated version of cm that we may be trying to get off

Keep in mind, Its not like cm is the only Dev team on android. Its really not a good reason to ditch an entire ecosystem

I choose not to run their stuff anymore.

Agree with you completely on the focal stuff though, CM is really rubbing me the wrong way

I really think a lot of people are being a bit juvenile about this whole thing. I find it disheartening that there's not more congratulating and thanking Steve and the Team for YEARS of bleeding edge and support but sadly its a whole lot more "Oh my god! I can't believe these people!..."
Wouldn't you think after all these years of 100% free development, umpteen zillion unofficial ports and various other roms built from their source or at a minimal part of it people would be like..."Way to go guys, recognition, funding and a new career doing what you love. We're happy for you."
I don't know, I just don't begrudge anyone's success. Plus I think according to various interviews and posts that there will be a balance between this commercial endeavor and the development community.
Anyway some people with a false sense of entitlement are & will be feeling butt hurt, being outraged and playing the victim. Not the first time or the last time we'll see this in the Android community.

I could care less what anyone says either way. I find it interesting what others have to say on the matter. As stated before, I have not seen a ROM from CM that completely worked on the phones I have used including the Victory. I guess I cannot blame the crew working for CM for this, or the Devs, it's probably due to the phone manufacturers. This move may work for our benefit and it may not, but calling people juvenile just for voicing their theory on what it could mean is a bit uncalled for IMHO. I support the devs that work on my device, both in posts, a little testing and financially with donations.

My comments are pure speculation, and I guess that makes me a 51 year old juvenile.

Theorizing and speculation are not what I'm referring too and if you took it personally then apologies. Im referring to people who are in shock, disgust and up in arms about it. People ready to abandon a firmware completely because someone may be able to have some financial success with their passion. When its simply they're mad that the the developers may not be supporting or providing a 100% free firmware. That's what I'm referring to as juvenile.

Thank you for the clarification. I personally welcome options other than stock. Any options.

Well short lived but a pleasure working with you even just for a quick second. Regardless of any feelings towered whatever direction CM is going can completely understand falling behind at work because your working on an Android project during work hours or on an hours sleep because you have an idea or believe you are on the cusp of figuring out an issue. I know myself sometimes its hard even though you have a deadline or something else going on that should be more important. At least that's how I get sometimes if understanding the op correctly. Often question myself whether I have a hobby or an unhealthy obsession.

I don't question. Its an unhealthy obsession.
