Visual Voicemail?

Hello All!

Coming from a HTC Hero (that I loved), to the NS4G. Is there any way to get the visual voicemail (like the Hero)?, or maybe a 3rd party app? "Dialing" to get your voicemail seems oddly dated for this phone (I actually forgot that it even existed). Thanks in advance for any help!

Try youmail from the market as it's free. For a modest price after original download upgrade to better youmail for a visually satisfying voicemail

Most seem to like Google voice but can be very problematic for some. Read all you can before choosing it. Just my two cents. What I suggested is solid and does not interfere with third party messaging apps ie; handcent or chomps. Plus the " better youmail" $2.99 upgrade has a great look and is simple .... read up on both and make an educated decision

Google voice does not interfere with messaging at all unless you set it up wrong. choose Google voice lite and its vvm only.

so... i set up google voice, then later read your reply to just use google voice lite. Problem is i cannot figure out how to go from one to the other. Sorry to be a pain, but am a little lost...

I am interested in this too, but mainly on selecting Google VM Lite option. I have a google voice account already and a phone number I selected before ever being with Sprint, so I have been hesitant to do anything with the app on the phone to prevent interference with my account already. Further tips would be appreciated I suppose. I do a search yet but since this is the most recent topic, rolling on with it.

Ahem..... like I said head over to the market and download youmail followed by the interface better youmail.... very simple and works great

here comes the dumb stuff....

so just uninstall GV & use the you mail, or will installing youmail (and going into settings) become the preferred voice mail. New to most of this, and terrifed I am going to screw something up.... thanks for spending time on this!

Once you've signed up for a number, it yours. But you don't have to use it.

sign up for Google voice
Download the app
Using the app follow the step by step to set up voicemail.
Choose "do not use Google voice to make any calls"
(Or choose to do the integration if given the option using your sprint number, the result is the same)
Turn inbox notifications off, turn text message notifications on.
???????
Profit

okay - went into APP settings sync/notification - unchecked sync inbox, and checked txt msgs - does that mean I now have google voice lite?

If you have problems with gv ... yes... all you have to do is go to the market and download free youmail... then pay $2.99 for the better youmail and you will have visual voicemail like you had on your hero but better looking.... very easy steps to follow and not confusing like gv. Especially if this is new to you.... try it you will like it. It will automatically transfer your number to it.

youll still technically have a gv number but if u don't use it and you've set up Google voice to be your voicemail then effectively yes. You're only using the voicemail.

Did u do integration? If not, then you can sync the inbox and turn off texts. But that's up to you. I leave mine with texting because its one less thing syncing in the background. And when I open the app it updates so I can listen to my voicemails.
Also the integration is actually pretty sweet when you're at a computer you can listen to voicemails and if u want to text but the phone is in the next room, it still shows your number. Plus you can make calls from your gmail page and the caller id will show your phone number. For these reasons a free setup on Google voice with a few more options is way better than paying 3 bucks for just voicemail.

thanks to both of you for all of your help. I am going to try both GV then Youmail each for a week, and then go from there. Just want to take a min and say thanks for being so patient with new NS4G users like myself. Your knowledge and kindness are fantastic! Thanks again!

No worries ... your original questions coming from a hero and wanting something similar will be answered with youmail as long as you upgrade to the "better youmail" $2.99 app.

Nothing wrong with GV for a lot a folks.... but certainly NOT for everyone. Having had the Hero from day one; I think I know what you are looking for.

Take care

last question I promise! (at least for today) - if I choose youmail, do i need to go into settings to turn off GV, etc - or will it give me the option to "set up" as only vmail, etc? would like to use my handcent sms (unless the youmail will handle that as well) and am just not really happy with google vm - I have 3 different apps sending the same email/text and it's driving me crazy!

If using a 3rd party messenger, you have to turn off notifications for all but the one you want to use. That's not Google voice that's just android. Also check gvoice on your computer and make sure that you don't have emails turned on. Some people like the emails better but I prefer the texts.
If that's not what's happening, then what apps are you getting notifications from?

Go into settings on stock messenger and turn off notifications. Same on Google voice. Only handcent will notify if you properly turn them off.

I use handcent with "better youmail" works great.... yes as stated go into settings on stock SMS app and disable auto retrieve.

Just try it. You want to listen to your voicemail instead of getting a text correct?

trying to set up youmail. asks for activation numbers to call youmail, and I will receive confirmation beeps (2). I get 3 beeps and the phone hangs up - youmail website still waiting for call - any thoughts on what i am doing wrong?

The three beeps and hang up is normal. You should then be prompted to a link to their site to set up an account t. Remember to add better youmail from the market for $2.99 if you want a Hero like visual voicemail and not just text.
