Help Volume problem with Orange Signal Boost app

Chris911t

Newbie
I have a rooted SGS2 with Cyanogen 7.1. I have the Orange Signal Boost app files on it and it works.

Just one minor issue. I made a test call and the volume was very low at my end even when set to maximum (it was ok at the other end).

Someone suggested that it was linked to the media player volume, so I played a music file, set the media player to max and tried again. It was now fine.

However, I don't want to have to keep the media player at max volume so as to be able to hear calls. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Anyone on a stock Orange rom that uses the Signal Boost app can say whether or not it's connected to the media player volume on stock? If it's not, then there must be a file or a setting or something missing?

PS I re-posted this from the Orange forum after it was suggested that I might do better here.

Chris,

I made a couple of lengthy calls earlier this evening, the first as normal and the second with Signal Boost enabled. The notification icon was green so I'm assuming it was active. There was no noticeable difference in the received volume between the two. This is using a custom ROM based on a stock Samsung KI4 release.

p.s. I should have added that my Media Volume setting is approx 50%.

Thanks Slug. When you say it was 'a custom rom based on a Samsung KI4 release', was it an Orange stock rom it was based on or something else? If it's an Orange one then I'm thinking that there could be other files in there that do... something to do with the volume of the Signal Boost app?

The other thing is - I've noticed another strange issue:

1. When I dial out everything works fine.
2. When people call me, I can hear them perfectly but they hear nothing at all - no static, nothing.

This only happens when the phone is using WiFi (house symbol = green), when the house symbol is red (using G2 network) it seems to work ok, so only when it's through WiFi is there a problem.

And I just ordered an Orange SIM thinking this was working. HELP!

One question - did you install Signal Boost through the flashable zip? If so, maybe I should un-install mine (which was done by pushing the files via adb) and try the flashable zip instead.

NB The flashable zip wasn't available when I did the adb route.

When you say it was 'a custom rom based on a Samsung KI4 release', was it an Orange stock rom it was based on or something else?

Definitely something else, a stock generic (unbranded) Samsung firmware.

Nobody ever calls me so I haven't been able to test that side. :) I'll set something up shortly and let you know.

edit: bloomin' signal must be too good today as I can't get Signal Boost to "go green".

Are you not currently using Orange? I don't think it functions otherwise.

did you install Signal Boost through the flashable zip?
Yes, as I wanted to be sure the files went to the right place. ;)

Aye that's the problem with testing Signal Boost - I always stand next to the WiFi router before I make/answer a call since the thing seems to stay with whatever was running when the call starts i.e. once it starts on a non-WiFi basis it doesn't switch to green house mode until the call is over.

Yes I already have an orange PAYG SIM in my personal phone - I switched it into my SGS2 for now to test Signal Boost and also since I gave up on GiffGaff after 1 month due to lack of O2 signal at home.
The new Orange SIM arrived today, since it's on a good deal I'll probably use it anyway (

Update: I went to the SignalBoost.apk file in the /system folder and clicked on it. It had an option to Install the app, so I did that. Now when I go to Manage Applications it does appear in the list, but...

Unlike other apps, there is no button to Uninstall it. :(

So I'm still wondering, - if I use the flashable zip from where I am (the files pushed into place via adb), will it overwrite files as needed? Or do I need to delete the SignalBoost.apk file first? What about the other files (.lib and .prop)?

I flashed the zip and I still have the same problem - for incoming calls only, the caller doesn't hear me (calls I dial are fine at both ends.

What should I try next?

1. Manually delete the files - presumably usng some form of 'root explorer' (and hope the phone keeps working in the meantime!) and then re-flash the signal boost zip .

2. Alternatively, go the whole hog and re-flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 and then re-flash the zip.

The 2nd option may mean that I need to learn how to backup the apps I've downloaded - I was planning to get CM7 and signal boost and "stick" at that point. Sigh.
I'd be grateful if someone could post a link that shows how to backup apps and data, flash a new rom, and then get the apps and data back onto the phone.

Thanks Slug, that's a very useful and comprehensive post of yours. I have posted the problem in the CM forum - there are a few other posts related to various volume-related issues, so there may something not quite right with the current CM7.

Since they are not rebuilding the environment until they have CM9 cracked, it could be a while before we see any change.

Thanks for your help so far :)
