I'd try to swap with another new nexus before switching. If phone call is not working properly, I think it's likely a defective one. It can have data issues, especially on 4G. But phone signal was never issue to me and majority is like that from what i see.

I tried that... went through three replacements and they all had display issues (two were heavily saturated in red and the other was very dim) so I kept my original. I have tortured myself, yes. If this update doesn't cure the one-way audio (or as Verizon/Samsung calls "audio reboot") then I'm going to dump it for something else.
 
Well, according to the 'reliable source' this update was due for release in "early April" and by my count, early April ends on Sunday.... at which point it is med April.

So let's go Verizon....clock's ticking.

Can we all assume at this point that anyone on this forum is aware of the above and if they haven't already done the above it's for a reason, thus they are asking about the official OTA update?
 
My main issue is with the call muting issue. Yesterday I had to call Comcast about a service interruption and I had to stop myself from using my cell since it would have sucked to have the mute thing happen right in the middle of the tech support call. :(

But that leaves one question in mind... how the hell do they expect us to reprogram the radio to actually work? that's the biggest, most common issue among all Gnex users... Come on now, dont be so negative. :D
 
I've never really had any of these issues, but I've been rooted/unlocked since about a week after I bought my Gnex. I'm currently on AOKP Build 31 4.0.4. The closest that I've come is my Gnex will refuse to connect to 3G/4G without rebooting my phone. I can't tell if it's due to Juice Defender that is the problem for shutting it down wrong or if it's ROM related or if it's just a Gnex thing.
 
Crossing my fingers for an imminent update release (official OTA). I have few complaints overall, but it would be nice if the radios get updated and reception improves. Reception in my office is so weak that my phone is literally unusable while I'm at work. I have coworkers who are also with Verizon, and their phones work fine at the office.
 
I have few complaints too. Other than somewhat weak/buggy 4G connection indoors, it's working fine for the most part. But I would like to see a little better signal strength (10dbm better at least) and smooth 3G/4G hand-off. A little longer battery, stronger volume, better low light image quality would be added bonuses.

It seems rooting/flashing can make it work better on radio, speed and battery. But official OTA shouldn't take this long just because it's possible to fix it ourselves. During the pre-release time, many of us were expecting that Galaxy Nexus would offer best android experience for both stock and root users. I believed that given their history of promptly updating Nexus One and S. It seems I underestimated influence of VZW in this.
 
OTAs take a long time because it costs VZW a ton of money to deal with unhappy customers(via replacements, exchanges, bill credits, you name it) if they release an update that messes up a previously working phone. This is why they take forever testing it. Some rom maker guy has no liability or cost what so ever if his little experiment messes up your phone.

I like the way you described this. I personally accept something may not work to my liking when flashing! I do it cos I dig it. When Verizon does it, they don't have that option (not to say they have a great track record).

Exactly. I am aware that I can root and unlock but I choose not to. I shouldn't have to do any of that to fix issues with the device, such as one of a phone's most important feature.... making phone calls.

Had the one way audio last night on the way home.... very annoying. Was on a tech support call Friday night and didn't have problems. Consider myself lucky.

Hold on. Verizon doesn't touch Apple updates do they? Verizon trusts Apple to do all the testing on all their updates from what I understand which is why Apple can tell their users the exact date that all their phones will get updates from their own keynotes.

Why wouldn't they then trust Google to get it right? Perhaps if Verizon didn't test (which by the way I have a hard time believing they really "test" anything--case in point, Droid Incredible) each update manufacturers would actually be able to rapidly respond to any bugs that come up. I mean, when I buggy pre-release is leaked to the folks at XDA they fix all the bugs within days.

I think Verizon would be doing themselves a service by allowing ALL manufacturers to just push out updates whenever they are ready. It would hold them all more accountable in the long run.

Well, if i recall correctly, VZW is on CDMA and Google doesnt support CDMA and leaves it to the manufacturers/ carrier to configure it themselves to make it work. So im assuming if they were to throw a stock update at us, it might break a few things... correct me im wrong.
 
Sheesh! I must be lucky...I haven't had one ounce of these problems with this phone. (knock on hairy wood) I've seen a couple of problems like pushing 1 to send voice mail and my cheek presses another button because the proximater
doesn't activate on time and ending a call sends me back to the call log and not the home screen (which I hate) but in all....I find this phone very conducive to my needs. Like solitaire. lol jk.

It's true that the CDMA Nexus' aren't considered "developer" phones by Google but that doesn't mean they don't create all the updates for them. Verizon just needs to give out a key or something for CDMA to work.

But that's not the point. The point is that Verizon "tests" all the Android updates while they give Apple a freebie. Both CDMA phones. Why not let the manufacturers of Android phones worry about their own updates?
 
verizon wont allow that because they have their apps on the phones, and they need to test them to make sure they work.
 
but regardless they may be expensive, but you do get what you pay for. the days of the old great cell phone providers where they strived to make there customers happy is gone! :(

That's why they spend weeks testing?! If it was just their apps I would think they would only need a few hours. They could even just ask the manufacturers to test them or get a special beta pre release or something. The whole Verizon testing thing still doesn't make sense to me in light of what Apple can do. It can't be just about the apps.

Oh well. I really thought having a nexus would speed up the incremental updates as well as the major ones. It's almost been 5 months with nothing. Still love the phone though.

Keep in mind also that Apple has a lot of leverage in their negotiations with carriers.

They have their own cdma tower and phone testing facility in Cupertino precisely so they can keep control of the updates.

Unfortunately android oems are at an automatic disadvantage because carriers can tell them to go screw because there is a lot of competition in phones.

If you want an iPhone on your system you have no choice but to play ball with Apple.

Consequently, Apple keeps total control of updates and any android manufacturer (or even the Big G, for that matter) has to deal with the carriers.

Sucks, I know, but that's the price we pay for freedom.
