Wal-mart have it for 149.00

I was at my Walmart yesterday and they had Captivates for 149. I paid 199 at the AT&T store but don't feel bad about it. The reps at the AT&T store were nice and they showed me some unique features.

For those who got it at their local Walmart store and were on a Family plan, were you able to keep you 550 min plan or did they force you to select a higher plan like they do when you buy from Walmart.com. Also, was this for the primary line only or can it be used for any other line?

Don't forget Amazon has it for $165 with a 2 yr contract upgrade. $90 for a new 2yr agreement. No tax for most people. Two day shipping.

She refunded me the tax , 8.75% (California) which was an additional $43 . She then just rounded up and said she would make it an even $100.

Tax on the $51 difference at 8.75% would've been $4.46 [?]

I'm actually pretty surprised about a $100 refund vs. a phone that was ~$50 more, especially from AT&T.

One of the reasons I gave on on Walmart this round was because they said they couldn't honor my existing FamilyTalk 550 plan. They said that they would have to bump me to 700 or 900 or whatever.

They said to just extend my FamilyTalk 550 plan I'd have to go to AT&T. When I asked why they couldn't upgrade me, he was like "Ask AT&T. We can only sell the plans they let us".

That was the same reason I bailed, I couldn't sort out my plan. I have a Family 450, my line is the secondary (cheaper) one, I had an _old_ PDAConnect Unlimited data plan. It also seemed like I was upgrading the a main line[?] I suppose I could have just gotten what I could, then walked the phone into AT&T, but there seems like there was an extra contract layer of sorts.

I couldn't make sense of it online, and I figure standing around in Walmart trying to sort it out was even _less_ compelling, so I went ahead and walked in and let AT&T handle everything.

No problems, they updated (grandfathered in) me to a "new" unlimited plan which is actually $5/mo cheaper.

I did whine a little bit and they dropped the $18 upgrade fee. :D

Unless if I am wrong, if you bought it at att, youw ould of paid the tax on the full $500, not the $199 price. At least this was what happened when I bought my iPhone.

Except in the context of the original post it was indicated a difference of $51 (the discussion was $199 vs. $148 at Wallymart).

It just seemed like a math discrepancy :D

Never heard of what you're describing - you pay tax on the amount of the purchase, I bought mine for $199, paid $12.94 in tax (upgrade price from AT&T).

No matter, if the guy got a good deal, great for him!

I got a corp ATT store to match the walmart price and waive the upgrade fee. I did have to go to 3 stores though cause the first 2 said they would do the price match but then were out of stock.

In California the law states that you pay tax on the full purchase price of the item. Since all these prices are technically rebates. Now if the price of the phone was actually slashed to $99 you would pay tax on the $99.

Holy hell!

So you're saying that the $199 price on a phone instead of considered a discount (and the purchase price) can be called a rebate and the full retail price can be taxed?

That's absurd! I could see if you bought it for $500 and sent in a rebate. I mean I just scored a set of new tires and sent in a rebate and if course I paid tax on the full amount.

Again, I didn't mean for this to break down into a discussion about state tax laws, I think a couple of us were just curious about getting money back from AT&T.

The only places I know of that will allow us to keep the Family Talk 550 plan are Amazon and Costco. Amazon has it for $165 and Costco does not have it yet.

Did you get it at Walmart.com or the physical store? Walmart.com forces you to select the 700 minute Family Talk plan or higher.

When I saw this post, I went to walmart's website and saw that they have the Captivate for $99 for renewals and new contracts. So, last night, I went to the at&t store where I bought the my phone and told them that Walmart has the phone for $99 (when I walked in I asked to speak to a manager). I explained that I've already confirmed that the walmart price is for a renewal and I that I'm able to keep my unlimited data plan. I told them that I realized I would have to play a restocking fee of $35 if I returned the phone at at&t so I am only requesting a refund of $65 so I don't have to deal with returning the phone.

The manager credited my account $65.

Wow, so that gives me hope that maybe if I speak to a manager at my local ATT store and explain to them the $99 price they'll let me buy one for that price there.
