Root Walk Me Thru Rooting My Eris

Ok now I am totally lost. I restored my phone and picked the rooted version since I couldn't get the stock one back and when my phone restarted it is on the stock one. So I'm confused on how this happened and worried if I boot back into the root rom that my phone will brick. I know it's rather hard to do....but I have bad luck. Also my stock rom has everything again but titanium won't recognize that I am rooted, just like before.

Boot into recovery. Do they wipes, as I described. Go to bsckup/restore and pick restore. You'll see some letters and numbers(these represent your phones id number). Select these numbers. This should take you to it menu with nandroid backuos. As I said, the number represent the date you made the backup, so your stock rom will be the oldest one since it was the first one you made.

If you describe in as much detail as you can what you did before you rebooted and got stuck at the skateboarding aliens, we can help you figure out what went wrong.
 
Hmmm, somehow I have some of the rooted stuff on what looks like the stock rom. Ok I'm going to wait for a reply on all this and play with my phone until then.

You can be rooted and be on stock setup. I ran that way for a few months when I first rooted. Try downloading titanium from the market, and when you open it, if it doesn't recognize root permissions, there is a button that says "Problems." Push that button, titanium will install busybox (because busybox was installed after you made this nand backup, it will not be installed when you restore it). Titanium should now work. Give this a try and let us know if it doesn't work for you.
 
I did exactly what you said. I might have selected the wrong one, or I shut down my phone and restarted it instead of doing the reboot option. Still can't get titanium to work unless I am in the new rom.
 
Alright, here is what I have done step by step. Before I finished the root yesterday with the new rom I put superuser titanium backup and busy box on the stock setup. I then proceeded to finish the root with the new rom. Everything was great, until none of my stuff was there. So, I then started following what you guys have said on here about how to restore the stock system and back up my apps and then go back into the new rom. Now as I stated I was having problems with it but now I'm good. I rebooted into the new rom after I backed up the stock one again to make sure it's there for later use if I want it. I had to go thru and re setup my phone as though I had only turned it on for the first time which was a surprise but whatever. Now I am back on the new rom and will see if everything will fall into place like you are all trying to help me to do.
 
For future reference, every time you flash a new ROM doing a full data/factory wipe and dalvik wipe you will lose the information on your phone. Usually, when you sign in your apps will redownload from the market. You can also skip the initial sign in and restore them with titanium. What I mainly use titanium for is backing up an application's data so I don't have to fix all the settings each time I flash a ROM. If you were expecting titanium backup to automatically put everything back how you had it after you flashed the ROM, that isn't how it works (or how any backup app will work). You will have to manually restore them, or, if you purchase the paid version, batch retore your apps.

This can get frustrating, but if you're using a new ROM you will have to do this every time. I actually find it to be somewhat fun (I'm weird). If there is an updated version of the ROM you are using, you won't necessarily have to set everything up again. I won't explain the procedure now, but if it comes to that, we can let you know what to do.

The reason this was different when you restored the nandroid backup is because a nand backup is basically a picture of your phone at the moment you make the backup. It backsup everything that isn't on the sdcard, so all of it can be restored later. However, this means that any changes you've made since the nand you are restoring will not be there.

If I could hit the thanks button for all of you guys a million times I would. I got everything figured out and working. I'm currently restoring my sms. I put titanium on the new rom and when I started it up...BAM! All my apps from the stock rom were there and I was able to restore them. I was able to restore my contacts this time, only I'm not sure why it took all my facebook PLUS twitter contacts and saved them as contacts. But it doesn't really matter considering I could easily delete the ones that I obviously don't know personally and have a number for. Oh and I live in Phoenix, AZ. If you ever want to come out and enjoy the best weather ever from October to May then go for it. I'll buy steaks and grill them out for you guys. You guys are all a wealth of information. Once I get everything back to just right then I'm going to start reading some more threads and figure out how to get these BS apps off that come on the phone stock. Oh and also figure out what other kind of cool apps there are that are out there for rooted phones.

Thanks, now I'm just messing around with making sure that all of the apps I had on the stock version did get transferred over. I can't find swype but that doesn't matter I am just redownloading it instead. I need to figure out how to get the bloat stuff off of my phone still. Other than that I'm great on this!
 
well,im glad you got it figured out. sorry i couldnt get back sooner,and i drive for a living,and typing replys on the internet is generally discouraged :eek: ;) some days are busier than others and i can reply to things while im sittin in the warehouse bored. but unfortunately today was not one of those days!

not much to add at this point,as i think youve figured everything out,but just in case heres a few things that come to mind:

-rooting means gaining control of all of your phones systems,files and functions. when youre rooted,you can change litterally anything in the stock software if you know how,and you gain the ability to flash completely new software if you want to. this is what you are doing when you flash the xtrSense.
-the 2 files in the dummies thread root your phone and then install a custom recovery. the first root file is what does the actual "rooting" or give you super user access to your phones systems. the second root file installs Amon_RA's custom recovery so you have the ability to easily make and restore backups and install new roms. at this point you are done. as metl said,you can be rooted and stay on the stock rom,and use your superuser access to change tings to your liking. once you are rooted,you will stay rooted,well,unless you conciously unroot by flashing a certain file :) flashing xtrSense was a completely optional part of the process,and not needed to finish the root.
-flashing new roms and restoring backups are a completely different things.metl described it quite well,so not much more to add. when you do the wipes,you always want to do them before installing the rom or restoring the backup. when you had to sign in above after restoring,im not sure if you restored your backup,then did the wipes,or if you simply wiped and re-installed the rom. either way,thats why you had to re-sign in to google. when you restore a backup,it will reapear just as you left it.
-unfortunately,you will need to re-setup your phone whenever you try new roms. but luckily syncing contacts with gmail,and using titanium to backup apps makes it fairly painless. like metlcat,i enjoy setting up a new rom... to me its fun and exciting.

Yeah most of all of it makes sense now. I do have a final question or two. I'm trying to get in and get rid of the bloat stuff off my phone. I have been reading some threads about how to do it but alot of it has to do with messing with the command lines and code and I don't even want to get into that at all. You might as well consider my phone a paper weight if I were to do such a thing. Also I put the free titanium back up on my phone and I went to get the paid version and....yeah it won't install. There's another app that I want back but I'll just have my buddy get it for me tonight seeing as he put it on my phone in the first place. So any help on getting rid of all the stupid bloat stuff would be awesome!

whats happening when you try and install the paid version? m friend had trouble with it downlaoding,and he just canceled his purchase and rebought it. it then downloaded and installed fine. :)

easiet way to remove things from your phone is with titanium backup :)

when you go down your list of apps,you can chose one,and it will have options to backup,resotre,freeze,or delete. any "bloat" i would highly reccomend freezing first and running your phone for a day or 2 to see how its affected. that way you wont accidentally delete something thats tied into something else and makes your phone not function. if you freeze it,and have prollems,you can "melt" it to put it back on. freezing simply makes the app invisible to the phone,without actually getting rid of it.

once you get your apps restored,settings adjusted how you like them,ringtones set,etc.,you may want to go back to recovery and make a nandroid backup so if something happens you can go back to a freshly setup install :cool: do this BEFORE you start deleting or freezing things with titanium,just in case. boot into recovery,backup,then reboot. dont wipe anything.

last and not least,as soon as your comfortable with changing things on your phone,get scary aliens "tracball optional recovery" working. it is great insurance that you wont turn your phone into a paperweight. erises are know for trackballs not working,and it would be really fustrating to get into recovery and not be able to modify or fix your phone because your trackball doesnt work :eek: :p
 
Well, while I'd rather not say how I'm getting the donate version of titanium backup I will say that I download it and when I try to install it, it starts and then says application not installed. Not sure why. Now about that tracball deal. I tried getting that at the beginning and wasn't really finding it anywhere. I'm currently looking right now on the market to try and find it.
 
Also how do I get in and overclock the Eris? I've been searching around on here trying to find it and I'm not coming up with anything. At least not that I can do or that applies to me.

If you are running xtrSENSE, you are already overclocked at 710 MHz. Well, and underclocked as well at 245 MHz. (The phone idles at 245 MHz to save battery and ramps up the speed to 710 when you start using it.)

You can control the speed a little more (and remove some of the stock apps) using an app called GScript that came with xtrSENSE. I'm still traveling through Thursday, so more then if nobody beats me to it. (It's the same gscript as you used to root the phone, actually. Go into it, menu->add script, and you should see a mess of scripts, and what they do should be obvious from their name.)

The Amon_Ra no trackball isn't found on the market. It can be found here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/214240-amon_ra-1-6-2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html

You'll want to follow Scenario 3. Follow the directions carefully like you did with rooting, but the process is pretty easy.
 
OK I screwed up! I put an app on my phone that allows you to take stock apps off and there was multiples of the phone book app called people so I uninstalled the extras and it killed all of them. I guess I'll have to go back into the boot menu and restore from there. Glad I listened to you Scotty85 and did that backup. Hopefully it works!

Yeah, its a simple script file edit... I'll probably just post a new text version of the script, but I want to do some more testing first to see if I can make it work on a variety of ROMs with and without the mkdir command. I also want to see if I can fix the silly "stderr:" messages that get produced (they weren't there in stock 2.1...).

OK, so I ended up restoring into the un-personalized version of the new rom. Not cool at all. I had to redo everything. I tried restoring one of the other backups I had done and it was the stock rom only rooted. I tried another one and it hung up on the 3 skateboarding droids. There was one more that I didn't try but it was from yesterday 4/18 and I know I did a backup today of everything that I had done and customized. Not sure why it wasn't there. I will do a backup of the one I just finished a little bit ago but before I do I need to know if there is any other way to get back the stock internet browser because when I restored to the new rom like I said up above...it was gone. It's never disappeared before but it's gone. I'm guessing that I have to go back to the rooted stock rom and use the titanium backup and back it up and then go back into the new rom? I know for a fact that I didn't delete it so why it went away I don't know....any help would be awesome!

Be carefull of what you delete with TiB.:eek: Unless you put a different browser on you phone, you should still be using the stock one. What rom are you using?
