Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

I have been running this for the last couple of days and it's definitely a plus...I also tried setcpu but it seemed to slow it down

I get like a rooted screen asking me to push up for fastboot, or back for simlock, home for recovery. when i hit home the error caution sign comes up with the phone underneath it? Anyone got any helpful tips?

me too..i'm guessing it's because i need to root my phone before installing this? :)

A couple questions before I make this jump...

1. I hear chatter of a memory manager. Is this like a task killer, or more like the way the OS manages apps already, just turned up a little? I'm not using a TK and don't want apps turning off all the time when they should be running... I need a little clarity here.

2. The Gumbo Custom Kernal... Is this like Flashing a ROM in that, it's going to change or overwrite Flash 1.1 on my device now?

It's getting RAVE reviews. Just a couple answers and I'll jump on this bandwagon (if I can catch it... cause it's so fast, geddit?)

Thanks all.

My understanding is that this is a mem tweak beefed up to tell android to close apps at a certain mem usage level which at default is at a poor setting.

The process to install is similar as flashing a rom. I installed on top off fresh1.1. Settings and layout remain the same. Just a kernel update this is.

I'm using it with TTG ROM ...works great!

I flashed it the very 1st day that it was posted ....it's nice...very nice..

the performance on my phone can't even be described..all I been saying is "WOW" ..

battery life has been better, speed great. my phone been on for about 3 days now..

Ok, I've done it. I'm wondering if I'm seeing the same effects, however. First thing I did was open handcent, open the keyboard and flip from portrait to landscape and back a few times... I'm not noticing any improvement in performance. Did the same thing in the Dolphin browser, no change.

Now, I did install setCPU before the Gumbo Kernel just to mess around with it. Anyone think there's going to be a benefit if I remove it and re-install? I have my doubts.

I installed the Gumbo Kernel also and noticed no difference switching to landscape mode....and I was SOOoooo hoping! However I didn't download setCPU, where do I go to get that and is it a .zip as well to flash? Maybe if you do setCPU after the gumbo kernel it works like a charm.

Love fresh!!!! Just would love a speedylishous phone as well :D:D:D

Thanks all!!!

Having banged out an email and a couple texts, I will say that that the keyboard delay is gone, daddy, gone!

On a related note... WHY AM I UP AT 3AM?!?!

I did the gumbo/setcpu lastnight and am very happy with the results. It is much snappier with the lag greatly reduced. I flashed it over freshrom and it's working great.

You get setcpy from the market, it's $.99.

Can someone give me some insight on SetCPU? I've downloaded it, chose the Hero setting, and now have a max of 528 and a min of 245. I don't notice much of a difference from when I first installed the kernel. I've got it set as "Performance" and set to start on boot.

Is anyone using the lesser aggresive version and are you noticing the same speed increase as the original? I want to do this, but don't want to worry about adverse effects to my phone.

I'm surprised that for such a seemingly awesome update there isn't more of a buzz going on in this thread. I've been reading xda all morning and can't decide whether to do this or not...anyone in the same boat as me?

Why wouldn't you do it? It takes 30 seconds, and the speed improvement is instantly noticeable.

Because I don't want to play with the SetCPU and if that is required there's no reason for me to do so. I don't know enough about all this to know how to tell just how well it works.

I have tried the different settings that have been posted for setcpu and it seems to make my hero laggy. Would you mind sharing all your setcpu settings?
