Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

I've restored my fresh+gumbo many times after doing something undesirable to my phone. No problems at all :D

Hmm, I wonder what's going on with mine.

Now even a new flash of Fresh 1.1 is hanging at "initialize Fresh ROM". Looks like I'll be RUU'ing again, and sitting stock for the night

I just rooted my phone and installed Gumbo kernel and the phone has definitely picked up some speed. Very happy about that, however, I did notice that I'm at 100% awake time where I was only 12%-15% before updates.....No tasks are running.....

You didn't mention if you are running SetCPU or Overclock. When I removed those programs my battery drained fast. You really should be run one of those two programs.

did you reboot the phone after flashing Gumbo?

I have neither SetCpu or Overclock on the phone. I'm pretty sure I did reboot the phone after Gumbo, but to be sure I rebooted again and I am still at 100% awake time......

Before the reboot android system was showing the most usage, however, now it shows nothing for everything....also have no internet now.....Nevermind, I got the internet back. Looks like my awake time is coming down as well....Thanks for the help.....

I was having wierd effects when I had a bad version of busybox on my phone. Maybe try and push a known good version of busybox to /system/xbin and

To install:
run "adb remount" (to enable rw on /system)
run "adb push busybox /data/local" (so you got busybox somewhere on the phone)
run "adb shell" (to enter shell on phone)

in phone shell:
run "/data/local/busybox mkdir /system/xbin" (wanna make sure the directory exist)
run "/data/local/busybox cp /data/local/busybox /system/xbin/busybox" (copy busybox to xbin)
run "cd /system/xbin"
run "./busybox --install -s /system/xbin" (this should create symlinks for all the busybox applets)
run "ls -al" (you should see alot of symlinks)
run "rm /data/local/busybox" (remove the temporary busybox)
from xda-developers - View Single Post - busybox for HTC Hero

This is just a thought, might not have anything to do with the problem though, I just remember I was having problems with the gumbo kernel but it was hanging up at the htc screen and it was caused by a bad version of busybox I had to replace.

I'll keep that in mind.

I ended up reformatting my SD card, and now I've flashed darchstar's AOSP 2.1 ROM to play with

I would re-download a fresh copy of all the files you used. Then reinstall Fresh1.1, Gumbo kernel, and Overclock or SetCPU. That should cure the problem.

i was thinking of unrooting..but ive read like 4 threads where people are bricking their phones..? cause of this.

im kinda scared..i just got sprint and this hero like 3 weeks ago.

as far as the txting apps go, i had handcent, but i noticed the stock messages app loads up initially much faster, but switching to landscape orientation takes longer, anyone know overall which app is faster/better i dont care about all the customization tools

I booted to recovery and wiped, then wiped ext partition.

Install from SD> fresh 2.05d.

Install from SD>Gumbo.

REBOOT

Phone hangs on the HTC screen immediately after reboot.

I looked at xda developers and saw a 2.1 ROM with Gumbo, but, the camera and blah blah doesn't work so I won't be trying that.

Just thought I would *try* to give something back, as this community has really helped me enjoy my Hero ALOT more.:D

to my knowledge the gumbo kernel was for 1.5 roms. 2.1 roms don't use it unless specifically stated and i think they're not the same as the 1.5 version. same with setcpu. not needed with the 2.1 roms as of right now.

try running damage control, fresh 2.0d, or darchlegend.

I'm all over this 2.0d with vanilla lock screen+clock.

SLOWLY, my hero is getting up to speed. Still having issues with battery life though.

It drains from 100 to 50% fairly quick, and drains from 50 to 15 a little longer. However I still don't

think I'm getting anywhere near 6-8hrs of heavy use, as most other users seem to be reporting.

Any suggestions on this. I have killed the HTC weather app/removed the widget, killed the weather

update option in settings, killed the builtin messages app, BT/WIFI/ALWAYS-ON-MOBILE are all

off and I have no task killers installed. I would kill HTC sense but I really like it's mail widget.

if you go to settings, about phone, battery, battery use you can see what's eating up the battery.

Flipz included an app in his rom called Autokiller. It's not a task manager, it just changes when Android manages it's memory and apps, and when it should kill off empty processes and what not.. Try changing it to the optimal preset as well.

When I was running Fresh 2.0d, I had no problems getting at least 6 hours of heavy use out of my phone. could have probably got 8 no problem if I used it till it died but I always charge it on my lunch break :)

Ok, settings>about phone>battery> whats been using battery reports:

37% Cell Standby

36% Phone Idle

12% Sprint nav (I used it for a quick 10 min trip today: gps on>use it > gps off)

7% google maps (same trip)

6% Display

2% Voice Calls

Please note that today is not typical. I would consider 'taodays' usage to be LIGHT and I'm down by 1.5 bars in battery meter (approx 85% left), maybe this is normal for the Hero but

I could go 4-5 days on my 'berry' with this usage pattern. But maybe I'm missing something.

I am using the auto killer included in the fresh ROM. Right now its set to aggressive but I will change it to

optimal in a bit (after I Nandroid backup). : )
