Want a boost in performance? Gumbo custom kernel!

What apps do you have installed? Do you have a task killer set up autokilling apps?

Your internal memory as reported by your SD and memory manager is different from RAM. Your internal memory will go down as you install apps. Your available RAM numbers will increased with this kernel.

Were you having lag problems before rooting and flashing the new roms?
Is it possible that your lagging phone could be a result of one of the marketplace apps not being "nice" with its memory usage? It is recommended that when installing apps, do it one at a time, then run the app to make sure there are no adverse effects on your phone. Since the Google market place is much more open then the itunes marketplace more poorly written/malicious apps can get out there.

What method are you using to gauge whether you're phones speed has increased?

Also Setcpu is more for battery life then it is for speed.

I don't know, but i'll look in to the apps.I come from a windows mobile phone so i would never say I have lag problems with my Hero infact it runs pretty decent,I just love to mess with things and mod and tweak so when i seen everyone raving about the speed i expected to be blown away and have yet to experience it. my phone is livable as is though...

I've read through most of this thread and still haven't found any answer to my problem. I'm rooted and running Fresh 1.1 and I've installed the Gumbo kernel. I've noticed a slight speed increase but there is still a lot of lag, especially with the keyboard. I've also installed setcpu and haven't noticed ANY change in battery life. It actually may be getting worse. I've got my setcpu settings on 480 Max and 245 Min and the CPU Governor on "on demand". any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated

are you running an auto task killer? if so... turn it off.. also have you rebooted the phone since applying Gumbo and setCPU? if not... ty that too

yes.. if you also set the min to 245 or lower (but not lower than 160) and then set it for ondemand... that allows it to slow down when idle... making the battery last longer...and it'll speed up when needed

I had a task killer running at first but uninstalled it after reading this thread and it still hadn't shown any improvement with performance. I appreciate the suggestions. I will try them out and keep you posted on the results

I'm back with results already. I unplugged my phone at about 11:15 am, had about a 10 min conversation and sent a text or two. Then I got another call about an hour later that lasted about an hour and a 15 mins. I looked at my battery widget...it's on 54% now. I changed my settings on setcpu to 528 max 245 min CPU Governor On Demand and I rebooted my phone. Still not sure what the problem is. Any other suggestions?

iver heard that 480 is just as fast and does a more efficient job with your battery, also i saw another post where someone says that once the battery actually reaches 50% its takes alot longer to drain the last 50% as oppsed the the first 50% earlier in the day....other wise im kinda in the same boat with you im experiementing with everything but so far i can say running 480 245 ondemand has improved my batt life and my phone still has definte zing to it

get this: 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download GK-0.31-signed.zip

1.) Put the zip on the root of your SD Card
2.) Power cycle phone
3.) Turn on holding VOLUME DOWN
4.) Press the HOME KEY
5.) Go to APPLY SDCARD:CHOOSE ZIP
6.) Select GK-031-SIGNED.ZIP
7.) Post a 'thank you dreamliner' reply

Thanks dreamliner, it works very well.

When I first rooted and put on fresh 1.1 I didn't notice any speed changes. My wife has a Hero also, stock. Side by side I would push buttons run apps etc. and they would run the same.

But installing gumbo and running the same side by side test and the rooted phone is now much faster. You can see screens coming up faster etc. I think typing is better hard to be sure.

Next I will have to try setcpu.

So thanks.

Sorry if this have been repeated but couple maintenance questions.

1. If I want to install the less aggressive gumbo or say there is an update, do I simply apply the new zip over the existing one?

2. If I want to remove gumbo and go back to Fresh Rom only, do I install Fresh Rom over everything I've done so far or do I need to run the RUU and then reinstall Fresh?

Thanks guys.

the easiest way to go back to the previous configuration is to restore from the nandroid backup that you should make before applying Gumbo... you should be able to flash the less aggressive version over the more aggressive but I believe to go back to just Fresh, you'd need to restore from backup.

Probably that hour and fifteen minute phone call.

Probably that hour and fifteen minute phone call.

That made me think a bit...

To put it in absolute terms, a 10 minute plus a 75 minute phone call equates to 85 of 250 minutes talk time... That is 34% of rated talk time, leaving 66 percent of battery if all you did was the conversations (and you were very close to the cell tower you were talking through). That is 12% above the 54% remaining at comment time.

So only 12% was used for texting and standby time since you unplugged your phone 4 hours before hand in a best-case scenario.

But in fact since you probably weren't standing underneath a cell tower during the 85 minutes of talk time, which increases transmission power, I would round up and say the talk-time ate 40% of your battery, and so the texting and standy only used up 6% of battery life.

Welcome to my hell. With a few short phone calls, a bit of sexting, a lot of internet use, and forgetting to use airplane mode for at least one flight, I always get 18 hours out of a charge. . Before fresh/gumbo/setcpu, it was 12-14 hours (less than that before I disabled auto updates on weather and all non-gmail syncing). 18 gets me through a long day, so I'm moderately satisfied now.

my phone is rooted with fresh 1.1 rom. I am trying to add gumbo kernel. i copied it to the root directory of the sd card. when i hold down home and power a screen comes up asking me if i want to clear storage . it resets my device but i never get the prompt to access my sd card to zip. did i do something wrong?

I have noticed that after about 5 days of use, the keyboard and orientation mode is back to the way it used to be, not as quick and responsive. Without installing any applications, extra add-ons, and just using HandCentSMS and the Browser Application, and a real clock to compare timings.

Me too

I used to go into applications, manage apps, and clear out each cache that way....took way too much time.

I found this app called CacheMate, and it has great review....including me. For only 1.00 you can clear out a ton of your caches and no harm is done to your phone.

You can get the app here and read all the reviews!!!

If you are rooted...

Download gumbo kernel zip file HERE

Place gumbo kernel zip file in main sd card directory(not a sub-folder)

Turn phone off

Hold down Home button while you press Power to turn the phone back on

Phone will boot into recovery menu

Select Apply sdcard update.zip

Browse to gumbo kernel zip file and select it

wait....

reboot your phone one more time and enjoy!

For some reason on my Sprint Hero, these steps were accurate. The first couple of times I tried by holding down the Volume button first got me nowhere. After holding the home button down, everything else was a breeze. Booted a couple of times, but didn't see much improvement until I spent the buck and installed Setcpu. After rebooting twice just to make sure, there is a dramatic improvement in quickness overall. My phone is finally as snappy as I've hoped it would be since installing Fresh rom a couple of months back.

I had been running the paid version of Advanced Task Killer, but as per the thread, I've for now turned it off to see what happens before I uninstall it. I've been running Power Manager for a couple of months now, but am wondering if I'll need it now. I've been running the Mugen 3200 battery for a month now, and although it adds girth and weight, I've been getting two-to-almost three days, with average usage. I think I'll put the stock battery back in and see what happens, as I was getting only 12 or so hours before the upgrade.

I'm also going to install the cache cleaner recommended above. Thanks for all of the great suggestions everyone! Now I feel like my Hero is finally living up to the hype. I've noticed that movies appear to look better and play without lagging, and went to youtube and downloaded one of my HD music videos, and their is literally no hesitation, where there used to a lot of stops before. Awesome! This has me stoked!

Has anyone tried restoring a nandroid that has the Gumbo kernel already in it? That is, has anyone tried to restore to something like Fresh1.1+Gumbo? Especially after coming from a 1.6+ ROM?

Has it worked? Mine just seem to get stuck at the HTC logo...and it REALLY sucks because of how much work I put into customizing them
