Want to buy the Note but.....

There are plenty of threads on ICS in this forum alone, a little looking or a quick search will tell you the answer.

It's not available. Sometime in the 2nd Quarter is the latest rumor, which could be the end of June.

Maybe a stupid question but can't the ICS be downloaded (when it becomes available) to replace the Gingerbread OS on the Note?

Yes, when ICS becomes available for the Note, it can be downloaded to replace Gingerbread. There are no stupid questions here. That is how we all learn!:)

Can you go back to GB if you don't like ICS?

Probably if you're rooted, yes.

I can see some people waiting to buy one with ICS already installed. I've read some things on here that lead me to believe that if it's pre-installed with an OS rather than an OTA update it's less buggy.

I think it's dependent on how you prepped the device prior to and after the update. I generally did a hard reset prior to the update. Then do another hard reset after the update. Then afterwards, I only did data restores (contacts, calendar, etc.). I do not restore any settings or things dealing with the system to minimalize on bugs surfacing. This was when working with Windows Mobile. But will apply it to my Note as well.
