War with AT&T

The reason for the strong, detailed response by me was the title of the thread.

WAR?

That's a pretty strong stance to take when one doesn't know what the problem is but freely attacks AT&T, I suggest you re-read the OP's post.

Second, it's not my job to educate you.

Especially when it's an issue that is very involved, and there are multiple mitigating factors all of which contribute to data usage.

I contribute to this forum as my time permits, but to tackle something as large and general as how Android phones operate is not my job.

If I can find the time to educate myself, then you can too. I've already given you a good source, yet instead of doing the work, you want me to do it for you? Who are you kidding?

ALL the carriers install bloatware on their devices. Just some more than others. I already said I use the two biggest carriers in the US. Verizon installs even more stuff that AT&T, if you do a little research you will see. They are more locked into selling you stuff than AT&T. Yet AT&T is bad too.

Still that has nothing to do with your data consumption. My Captivate came with just as much AT&T bloatware as anyone else, I simply don't use it.

Why do I get great battery life when others may not? Simple I know how to manage the device.

When people ask for help without declaring WAR .. when they take an open honest approach I'm far more inclined to help then when they go on the attack.

They need to desperately remove the posting abilities of immature children such as yourself. You are antagonistic, unhelpful and contribute nothing to this thread.

Oh, and if you have enough time to post your long rants I'm sure you have enough time to find and post a link describing this issue or to briefly explain why this person's phone is doing this.

Please people,

Don't get mad at this precious soul.

There are only two logical explanations for 3gAndroid.

One...

Hes messing with us (and I think he just might be).

Two...

He is truly as crazy as he sounds. And honestly, if thats the case- don't get upset..don't waste any time replying. Just smile and nod towards his general direction.

But out of all the things to be frustrated about in this world, 3gAndroid is not one of them. I do however, thank everyone for pointing out where he is flawed logically, but I think the whole community understands those points now.

3gAndroid,

Have you actually read my entire post, before you decided to jump down my throat? If you have, you would have noticed that I actually said that there is no way any phone should be using 2-3GB of data a day under normal usage.
The fact that I said AT&T sucks and suggested the guy drops them as his carrier has nothing to do with the fact that he has an Android based phone. It has to do with the fact that their service sucks compared to Verizon for example and their CS, as friendly as they are, are clueless most of the time.
Also, why don't you take your own advise and educate yourself on the fact that THERE IS data leakage on AT&T smart phones. It's been posted about on here as well as on the web. And the suggestion is to get AT&T to not charge their customers for that data, and that's another reason why AT&T sucks. Personally, I have an unlimited plan because I didn't want to care about my usage, but for others who are on a limited plan, this is a big deal, so how about you actually post something worth reading instead of attacking people.
And I don't need to research what bloatware Verizon or T-Mobile put on their phones compared to AT&T, I know a lot of people have those companies as their providers with Android based phones. And when I showed them all the bloatware installed on the Captivate, they were amazed. Now I'm sure other companies install bloatware as well, but it certainly looks like AT&T is the worst.

I have to disagree with you (about the AT&T thing, not 3gandroid)

first off, I work for at&t, but use verizon as my main phone. I have been using android phones for a while (since the original moto droid). Customer service is definitely clueless..well it isnt so much clueless, but its the fact they have to read from scripts which makes them sound clueless. Same goes for any other carrier you call in to.

I owned the HTC Aria and now have a captivate, and i can tell you data leakage is not normal, and is not something that is related to AT&T. While there have been some reports on this forum about data leakage, it is so rare you can count the number on your fingers. When I had the HTC Aria, there were no complaints about data leaks, and they have the same exact bloatware. Verizon is neck and neck with AT&T with bloatware. Neither is better. trust me.

Something I havent seen someone suggest is that maybe the OP has a virus. Its rare, but it happens...

I say there's something wrong with the phone, no doubt. Either it slipped by QC in the first place, or there's something installed that's being very naughty. I doubt even the most caffeinated teenage android enthusiast would use 3 gigs in 2 days. While I don't advocate all-out war on AT&T (my experience has been that conventional weapons against a large multinational corporation costs millions of dollars and thousands of lives), I do advocate being a dog with a bone on this. A huge corporation is NOT going to look out for one person with a data problem. You have to stand up for your rights. Best of luck.

The people I talked to were NOT speaking from a script. I will say that I have been in difficult situations with Tmobile (honestly have never been with anyone else besides Tmobile and AT&T) and they NEVER had the audacity to speak to me like TWO different AT&T staff did from TWO different departments.

There is a way you treat customers. Even if you think they are lying scum bags. In this case I am NOT, but I understand that they most likely think I am.

Again, I am not a teenage girl. We have a business account, I am a program director. We are dealing with $40 in charges, my company spends thousands a month.

A virus may be the culprit. And I NEVER claimed it was AT&T bloatware. But I did say this, and I stand behind it.

If AT&T wants to LIMIT my market experience from apps like (Angry Birds). For whatever reason they have, then they have a responsibility to meet me in the MIDDLE. When I install a rouge app. Don't get me wrong, if alls they did was exclude programs like TEATHERING apps (which help them make money), I wouldn't expect them to meet me in the middle. But they are limiting me from using apps that could potentially be buggy? Could potentially hurt the OS?

Alright..Well you FAILED to limit whatever app that took 3 gigs at a time. I didn't even think it was physically possible to move that kind of data from and into this phone in that time period. Seems like my browser experience should be a lot faster in that case.

Once again, if they come back and say

"UZZA, YOU DOWNLOADED ALL SIX STAR WARS MOVIES, OVER 3G ON YOUR PHONE YOU SOBISH!!"

I would come and post that response,

I would also apologize in person to the local businessman here..(Even though I think he was rude- even if I was wrong he was rude). But I honestly think this is some kind of OS core issue, either with AT&T's bloatware or with Android. And I am on pins and needles to figure it out.

I welcome you to question my logic,
I feel absolutely reasonable on the above points.

I think AT&T (or any carrier) should impliment a fail safe for high data uses like this. They should be able to either shut of data or the application if it starts taking unusually high data

I still believe in my points.

But i also believe that AT&T has handled your situation poorly, and their customer service should have done better. I totally understand you frustration. If i was in your situation id be going mad right now.

I do not think it is really your fault for the data overages
I do not think it is AT&T's fault either.

I do think something IS wrong, either way, it was handled poorly by our side

*Nods*

Honestly...The reason I care so much about what you guys think is...

Everyone around me are completely new to this kind of technology. So when I try and apply logic with coworkers ect, they just passively agree with me.

So I just want a reality check, don't want to be chasing a whale.

Will keep you posted,

I know you are all in anticipation.

if they give you more trouble, and do not credit you back the charges and refresh your data plan, let me know. I can try to call in myself and talk to them for you and get them to do it

working for att ive learned a few tricks in talking to these guys

...the OP has a virus...

I had wondered about that- not a virus but maybe using UZZA's internet like a bot- to remotely funnel internet traffic through. But I have not heard of this on smart phones and did not want everyone to get worried or upset over just a thought...
If that were the case though a factory reset and re-provisioned sim card should do the trick...

Hey now, 3gandroid may have just had a bad couple of days. I'm sure he was projecting onto this forum; in other words he was venting emotion pent up from something completely unrelated. Or this is a sore spot for him for whatever reason. Look at his profile the number of posts and kinds of posts and the thanks he's received, he's not usually like that. Cut him some slack.

I don't understand where everyone is getting the idea of these "unlimited data plans". Since January 2008, AT&T changed their terms of service to include a "soft limit" of 5GB on their so called unlimited data plans. In most situations, unless you have purchased your phone outright without a service extension in the past two years, you are now in a 5GB "unlimited" data plan or the new 2GB data plan. If you are a new AT&T customer since June 2010, you are limited to the 2GB plan and you have no other option for a larger data plan.

There are instances where smart phone customers that have been smart phone customers since January 2008 have been grandfathered in to the real unlimited plan, not the 5GB "unlimited" plan, but people with those plans are getting fewer and fewer if they want a new smart phone without paying full price.

AT&T has a trick up their sleeve with data plans. AT&T will be rolling out LTE soon and to take advantage of it, you will need a new "4G" phone, and pay the early adopter 4G fee (like Sprint does now), but your 4G data will be "unlimited" until everyone starts getting 4G phones. It's standard procedure and you should be used to bending over for the cell companies. Heck, they all do it.

I'd have to disagree on the point of Verizon installing just as much bloatware. I've personally talked to owners and seen Moto Droid and Droid X phones from multiple people, both phones came with no bloatware (at least none that could be seen) Same goes for T-Mobile with Nexus One.

I don't know the answer to the original question.

I am grandfathered into unlimited data, and I am definitely switching carriers if they start charging me after my contract expires. I just don't want to have to worry about it. My comparable plan with T-Mobile was $50/month less, and I only switched because I didn't get a signal in my new building.

The only problem you will have is if you stop the data plan and then try to start it back, they wont let you. So you will have to keep that data plan.

If AT&T would just limit and tier by bandwidth and not by raw byte count, this would be a moot issue and all the problems would go away, while still addressing the core reason that the data limits are in-place in the first place... bandwidth.
