I can say that for sure, simply installing quick settings on my out-of-the-box LG Optimus Elite--without even enabling the wifi hotspot feature--caused me to run into the Error 67.

That MIGHT have been fixed with the Aug 2012 OTA firmware update, but I have not decided that it's worth the headache ATM for me to test it.

If I were you, I'd be tempted to: unbox the phone, install the latest OTA firmware update, then install quicksettings, activate the phone, and see if I got the error--if I got the error then all I'd have to do is call CS to get the MSL and conduct a factory reset--since I'd have no data/personalization, I wouldn't have lost anything.
 
I had quick settings installed on my Elite for a while but went back to the stock power bar. Only started getting error 67 well after I removed it. I don't think I've seen an error 67 though since the update. I do still get an error (104 I think it is, I forget right now) but no where near as often as I did.
 
Okay, update/bump. I decided to take a leap and download Quicksettings (previous app I used for wifi hotspot). With the Aug-2012 OTA update, I no longer get a presistent Error 67 that requires a factory reset.

But hotspot-generation doesn't work for me with quicksettings. What happens is:

Turn on 3G, then turn on wifi hotspot in QS. Phone thinks for a sec, then your 3G goes away, with a short "error 67" code. Hotspot turns off, then 3G data comes back. Hotspot never re-enables.

I feel like VM intentionally bugged the initial OS re. wifi hot-spot since they don't have a practical way to monitor hot-spot usage remotely on their network. But they didn't count on the OS bug always requiring a factory reset. So my hunch is they fixed their "bad bug" and replaced it with their "good bug" in the august-2012 OTA update, that now does what they want--kills your data connection when you try to enable wifi hotspot, but then comes back (after the hotspot function dies), and doesn't require a factory reset.

tl;dr, no more error 67 that requires factory reset, but wifi-hotspot generation (at least with quicksettings app) doesn't work.
 
talkin out my a.... here maybe but since you can pay extra for a mobile hotspot plan, aka tethering, there must be a way to flip a switch to make it work???

someone smart has to pony up the extra charge n compare changes maybe.
 
Newbie here. HAD sprint for my elite optimus. Quit my job therefore phone shut down, STill get awesome WIFI! WhY? and can I get the error 67 off ? annoying sprint .. BTW I own my phone.

Unfortunately at this time, VM only offers wifi-hotspot packages on the iphone 4S and the HTC Evo V (their only phones with 4G capability).

They no longer allow wifi hotspot generation on any of their 3G phones.

But as I mentioned above, it seems like they control this via the phone OS (rather than monitoring their network), so unless you have an older-released phone like the Optimus V, or if you have a rooted/rom'd newere android phone, you won't be able to successfully open a hotspot easily (a lot of the time...but not always).
 
I can believe it really work. My Wi-Fi is back on; I thought I have to purchases a new phone. Thank you for sharing the information, Thundershower
 
From ehat I've read it was sprints decision to disable wifi tethering on the elite for some reason or another but its unclear at this point why they did. My guess is their finally starting to crack down on certain things which is expected from time to time. Wifi tethering works but you have to pay for it which is fair in my personal opinion can't always get stuff in life for free. Depending on your needs for a hotspot it would be worth paying for the mifi device and service. This reflects my opinion nothing more.
 
Alright, I normally hate digging up a month-old thread but this is relevant and I'm sure lots of people would still like to know the definitive answer to this:

Yes, the Optimus Elite can do WiFi tethering, I just got done holding my breath from trying this. I used the app "WiFi Tether for Root Users", installable from the Play Store, but in order to use this, your phone must be rooted. The user Giantpune has created a safe, simple, one-click root called Poot which can be found in the "Elite - All Things Root" sub-forum here. I've read that there has been luck with "Barnacle WiFi Tether" as well (source: ktb83).

Some things to note about my test: The network that was created by the app I used was an ad-hoc network, but worked perfectly with my laptop so I didn't bother changing any settings in the app. If others have tried that app in AP mode, please share your experience on that, as I know some devices don't like ad-hoc mode.

I called Virgin Mobile and told them I was concerned about the hot spot problem....and I insisted they give me the msl number in case they were closed. And with little argument they complied. Considering all the tweaking we do to our phones, it's a little crazy not to be able to do a reset. Good luck
 
Sorry I'm a total newb... I have an Optimus V with VM and I don't know if I'm rooted or not and if easy teather will work for me or if there is something better to use my phone as a hot spot?
 
With an Optimus V (as opposed to the Optimus Elite), Quick Settings should work for the wifi hot spot regardless of whether you're rooted or not.
