Root Water damaged

hey guys my sister dropped her Desire in the toilet bowl (why is it always the toilet?? lol) So the 1st thing I did was to take out the back cover, battery and sd card to let it dry out for couple of days. In the meantime I noticed both white stickers on the battery and phone were red so I knew immediately the warranty was void! After doing some reseach I eventually put the phone in a bag of rice for 24hrs (Im guessing it was probably too late for that)

5 days on, the phone works except for 3 important buttons.. the up/down volume button, home and menu. Infact it seems like the left hand side of the phone is paralyzed! lol Trackball and back/search buttons work ok. Im guessing the water traces are all over the left side of the phone. What can I do?? She doesnt have insurance and Im pretty sure if she sends the phone back to her network/htc they will charge her pretty penny to fix those buttons.

Strangely enough I can get into hboot by holding the power and dwn volume button but once there I cant access other menus except fastboot via power button. I noticed one thing tho, the hboot menu flickers when trying to use volume buttons so it seems its not completely damaged?? So I sat there, contemplating on rooting and adding a custom rom on the phone to see if that fixes the button problems but obviously I know rooting is the easiest part it doesnt involve using any of the buttons but adding custom rom requires one to go into recovery which I cant do! So Im back to square one unless anybody got any suggestions?? I could leave it out to dry for further few days but what is my other options? Since the warranty is void should I dismantle the phone and see if I could wipe away the water traces??

Lol but Dan everything else works! She can make calls, send texts, use internet. The touchscreen seems unaffected too its just those buttons I mentioned dont work!!

Water is extremely corrosive. If its not caught immediately by rice (and even then) it will start bad and gradually get worse. The buttons interface directly on the mainboard so the mainboard is damaged and will get worse

Needs entire mainboard replacement minimum. It's fecked

I've had toilet phone and wine phone and see all manor of other liquid phones in my job and its rare they don't deteriorate quickly.

I've known some success with immediately submerged in rice

I see. Luckily shes eligable for upgrade now so now its a question of which phone to get. Might point her in the direction of Desire S.

Lol she wont go for a cheaper option I know that for a fact BUT I'll defo recommend her to get insurance for her new phone!

Just an update guys. I managed to root her phone and added MIUI rom plus the menu and home buttons work now! Only the volume button seems knackered at the moment but at least everything else seems to be working now.

You guys aren't gona belivee this. The curse struck again! This time she dropped it in a cuppa tea! Swear down she got butter fingers! lol But to my surprise its still working! I did the usual, put it in bag of rice for couple of days and everything seems to be in working order so far. Gotta admire Desire's resilience, Its been dropped 2 times in couple of months now and yet It survives! Its incredible!

I think maybe STOP giving your sister expensive electrical goods....dont let her near the tv too...she might fry it lol

though saying that, some people naturally can give off a small discharge and screw with things.....I know lately I've been picking up a HELL of alot more static shocks than normal...im just waiting till I fry my laptop by mistake....BUT if I do that I'll probably think im some sort of superhero...peter griffin style :p

LOL none taken Eddy! I have to say I am dissapointed with her. Its the first time Ive got her an expensive phone and its only lasted 1 year!

Dean I got her a very expensive laptop for her birthday few months back. Lets hope I dont live to regret that! Ive warned her to keep all forms of liquid out of laptops reach OR ELSE! :D

wait...whats that sound I heard? kinda sounded like a glass of some liquid based article ruining very expensive eletrical hardware :D;)

nah I jest...but yea, just keep an eye on it lol

saying that...they don't TRULY make 'em like they used to...picture the scene....around 1989 or maybe 1990...small 5 year old boy playing with an OLD atari 2600 (the plastic wedge one not the woody...hehe woody)....and a nice PINT of THICK chocolate milkshake.....now picture that small boy somehow unknown even to the heavens above....accidently tipping the entire glass straight over a powered on and working unit without cartridge in...so that said pint of milkshake has entered that poor atari 2600 through the air vents in the top and through the cartridge slot..

now picture that poor games console stripped naked, hanging on a washing line (yea no rice here!) and then within 4 hours....back in that little boys bedroom as he played pitfall!....yea!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

and that little boy? well he grew up to remember that story....and did he learn by it? well....the big pint style mug of tea that is resting an inch from his laptop right now I think tells you if he did or not ;):D:D

Lol You're right. Considering how they have compromised the built in quality of most modern tech gadgets these days you would be very surprised If they survived especially after being dunked in water 2 seperate times!

In the meantime I am keeping an eye on the laptop like a hawk! I wont be happy If something were to happen to it! GRRRRR lol

Doesn't suprise me. My step brother's mate used to dismantle his Amiga and clean it in the dishwasher. Its obviously a stupid idea, but it worked.

Electronics equipment is very sensitive nower days though.

This reminds me of a funny story a colleague told me on my first IT contract. He used to work on a service desk, received a call from a user whose keyboard was dirty. He advised him to clean it with a mildly dampl cloth.

Later on that day he went to the toilet to see a fully open laptop, keyboard down, dripping into the sink.

:eek::confused::rolleyes:

IT! every day you learn something stupid!

pfft....my story was better....featured an Atari :p;):D

Sounds familiar to me this story, I dropped my 3 week old desire into the toilet, and not one with just plain old water in it, no, mine was full of a freshly flushed bloo loo block! First I screamed a bit, then a ran round like a headless chicken, then I pulled the battery, sim and SD card, wiped it with a towel and sat it on top of a hot radiator for 2 hours, and thank god it worked, no problems at all, infact that was my driving force to rooting it, as the little water indicators inside the phone were now shining red I thought I've got nothing to lose, so I did and haven't looked back and the phone and all buttons work fine, it was only a brief dip in the loo, but it was fully submerged for a good few seconds, suffice to say I now have a different routine whilst using my phone near a loo. :D
